Unofficial "Is [insert game here] any good?"

  • The Saboteur-WWII games always catch my attention and this one seems unique.

I picked it up a few months back. I'm a big WWII history buff, so I figured it'd be right up my alley too. It's got a lot of good content and plays much like GTA in Nazi occupied Paris, with a dash of Assassin's Creed thrown in there too. It's a little rough around the edges though, but probably worth trying out for the low price it's going for these days.

I have a sealed copy of Battlefield 1942 in my desk. Is it worth giving it a go?

Yes it's a very fun game, it's worth giving a go.

However you have to go through some work too getting multiplayer working, EA discontinued support for the game and thus so did Punkbuster. Still, there are fans of the game that have solutions for getting an up-to-date PB version. You just have to google it and you should find a moongamers forum where they have some solutions.

Was thinking of playing The Darkness, but I have a few questions.

How is the story?

Any bugs or glitches?

Replay value?

I'm sure this has been asked, but I'm really considering picking up LA Noire. Anyone with this game recommend it?

Heres my review.

Spoiler
This is a Review for L.A. Noire on the Xbox 360

Premise - The game is set in 1947 Los Angeles and you play the role of Cole Phelps, an LAPD detective. You conduct interrogations, arrest criminals, and investigate crimes and crime scenes. This game also features the latest in motion/face capture technology and features real actors playing the PC and the NPCs.

Gameplay - The game is centered on solving cases and stopping criminals. A lot of your time will be spent looking for clues at crime scenes and interrogating witnesses and suspects. The evidence gathering is very hands on and features close ups of each item you pick up with stunning detail. The interrogations are equally detailed and nuanced and can be quite challenging. These mechanics are well-polished, but can get a little repetitive. Every case features the same, gather all evidence, interrogate people, formula, but is broken up with car and foot chases, or good 'ol fisticuffs, but these mechanics do also get repetitive as well since they are featured at least once in every case. Aside from the cases, there is also street crimes. Street crimes vary from suicidal jumpers to bank robbers to hostage situations and everything in between. These offer a nice break from the main case your on and are each semi-unique. My favorite involved a guy wearing a pot on his head and yelling at pedestrians. There is also the gunplay which is polished and simple enough, point and shoot (theres an option to skip the gun parts if you die on them a certain number of times, but this feature can be turned off). All in all, the game plays nicely.

Story - This game is the first of its kind when it comes to storytelling, featuring real facial expressions and emotion. It is a truly gripping thing just to interrogate someone or speak to a grieving next of kin. The story in very complex and sometimes hard to understand, luckily you have a trusty notebook to keep you in order. My favorite thing to do was find a newspaper, which played a little cut-scene that told a story about an up-coming case. There are 13 of these newspapers and they all tie into a great narrative within a narrative.

Graphics - The game looks great with minute detail on evidence and a 90% accurate recreation of 1947 LA. The most stunning thing is the facial animations, which I mentioned before, every little smile and eye twinge displayed realistically and strikingly. There is no game which matches this level of realism. Also, I never ran into the same old house or bar. Each building you go to is unique, and there is a huge number of unique set-pieces, something you don't see a lot of in modern games.

Sound - One of the best original soundtracks in recent years, hands down. The voice acting is just phenomenal and I didn't hear the same voice on two different NPCs once while playing.

Bugs - Little to none during my playthrough.

Replay - This is one of the games biggest flaws, replay is kind of killed when you already know the outcome of every case. Players will have to wait for DLC to add more meat to the game.

Overall - Despite the lack of replayability and the somewhat repetitive nature of the gameplay, L.A. Noire is a great game. It is a truly unique experience and has conquered one of the great faults of gaming with its realistic portrayal of facial expression. 9/10

God of War III?

God of War has always been a good series. It's got a fairly decent combat system (not the best or deepest, but it's inoffensive and gets the job done), but the real meat is in the level design. There are always some very clever puzzles to figure out, or various challenges, set pieces, and bosses to conquer, and it's all evenly paced to keep from feeling repetitive. And it just has a lot of polish. None of them are very long (usually about 10-15 hours), but they're very "packed," you could say. God of War III continues all of this well enough. If you haven't played the previous games in the series (which are available for the PS3 in HD), your enjoyment might be hampered, as it begins immediately where GoW2 left off, which might leave you more than a little lost as to what the hell's going on...but then, since there's nothing as epic as storming Mount Olympus and fighting Poseidon mano-a-mano, so maybe you won't care. The story of the games, in my opinion, is incredibly stupid anyway.

Little Big Planet? Uncharted 2?

Not for everybody, I like puzzle games but and decided to make this one of my free games for PSN.Sadly though I couldn't really get into it, it never really came off as a puzzle game once I started playing. Its certainly one of the most customizable and creative games out there but like I said isn't for everyone.

Uncharted 2 is a great game.I honestly don't understand why it gets such praise, maybe its because PS3 [censored] needed something to brag about at the time. Its simply an action adventure game with nearly zero flaws. Its does everything really well form story to gameplay. Then again it doesn't do anything magnificently to make it deserve the praise it gets. Its certainly worth the price its at now.

It's very, very similar, but sort of a "light" version. It plays much the same, with regular/magical/rare/set/unique items, with gems you can socket and item-acquiring services in town. The game is shorter, has only one hub, fewer classes with fewer build options. Game quality is high, I think; it feels to me more like small Diablo 2, not worse Diablo 2, but that's why it's cheap. If you like one you should probably like the other.

I hear a bit of talk on these forums about Mount and Blade? Is it a good game and does it lean more towards Dragon Age and Baldurs Gate or Morrowind and Oblivion?

There's a demo for it. I tried it. It looks like Oblivion (at least, my character did - you know, the plastic potato people with ugly neck seams). I totally failed at the controls and that made me completely lose interest in the game.

I haven't played GoW3... have you played 1 and 2? If you have, then buying GoW 3 is a no-brainer! :P

As for LBP... I got the PSP version yesterday. It's... it's okay. I don't find it particularly riveting. It's a platformer, you try to navigate to the end of the level. There's a score system, where you get points by collecting bubbles. Some bubbles contain things, like stickers (with which you can decorate the environment as well as, in some specific locations, affect the environment) or costume parts. The setting is that Little Big Planet is the place where all the free-floating ideas from people's imaginations go, and your avatar there is a Sackboy. I haven't gotten very far in the game. To be fair, I've never been big on platformers for platformer's sake.

I enjoyed it and this is coming form someone who is not a huge PC gamer. However if your not great at RTS games even in single player I can't see this being all that different.YOu could turn the difficulty down if you need to.

I really enjoyed the campaign the multiplayer is good to if thats your thing.

As far as good games for the Genre:
Company of Heroes
Dawn of War (I liked 1 and 2, but 2 doesn't have any base building)
Supreme Commander and Supreme Commander 2 if you can get it for cheap (<$10)

I'm sure there are others but those came to mind as having a good single player campaign. I'd still recommend SC2 though.

I really liked the campaign's gameplay, but not so much for the story since Brood War had a superior story and characters. But on to the gameplay, each mission in the campaign had some sort of gimmick that made each level feel fresh and unlike the previous ones. Like one mission had a day/night cycle in which you had to make the most of the nights destroying infected nests and then hole up at night defending against infested humans, other missions have you dealing with lava that kills anything on lower ground, etc. You can also choose upgrades for units outside of actual missions and those upgrades stick, making you feel like you're actually customizing your army a bit.

The campaign and the various single player challenges (some frustratingly difficult) ease you into becoming prepared for multiplayer skirmishes.

The multiplayer's really good, and even if you're bad at RTS you'll be able to find a league that has players of similar skill levels. On any case, there are tons and tons of custom maps that provide hours of entertainment, like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBbVqR3Euf4.

Is Bulletstorm good? Does it have a good story, or is it mostly mindless action?

An example of a shooter game I really liked was Call of Duty: Black Ops, much more than all the other ones because your character was developed but there was still great action moments. I'm not asking if Bulletstorm is as good, I'm not expecting that, but will it satisfy my need to mix action and story?
