Unofficial "Is [insert pony name here] any good?"

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 9:27 am

Thinking about getting a game, but not sure if it'll be any good? Ask away!

For those replying: please explain why you did or didn't like a game; constructive feedback is more informative than a simple "this game was awesome" or "that game was awful."

For those asking: it helps to know what sort of game aspects turn you on or off, and what you already know about the game you are interested in. It's hard to address "is [game] good?" if we aren't sure what you like and don't like, and whether or not you know the basic info about the game (genre, plot premise).

Useful Links:
http://www.metacritic.com/games/ <- useful insofar as you get a large sample of "professional" opinions, as well as many thoughtful and insightful user comments/ratings. Will not guarantee that you will love or hate a game you are considering purchasing/playing. Sometimes contains useful info about game problems that you can ask us here about (i.e. "I read [game] has a ton of bugs/has long loading times, are they really horribly buggy/long?").

I'll just carry this over from the end of the previous thread:

How's Heavenly Sword? I like the soundtrack and I recently remembered it from when I first played a demo a few years ago when the PS3 was new. I have never thought much about playing it because I heard complaints about the length, but it can't be more than $20 for a brand new copy, by now.

Also, if I were to play only one version of Okami, which is better, the PS2 or the Wii version? My brother has a Wii with Okami on it (although I'd rather play any given game on my own platform and I'm sure he would prefer I do the same) and I've got a PS2, but not Okami.

PS2.
Probably this. I remember reading that the Wii motion control for the celestia brush was dodgy.

Also: why don't you have this game already?! :o And: pick up Summoner 2 while you're at it, it's one of the best RPGs I have ever played. Ever. Also: you'll want to use gamefaqs so you can find all the secrets.

Saints Row 2. It's pretty cheap right now and can keep you busy.

Should I get the God of War HD Collection?

With the series on sale today in Steam, what are people's thoughts on the Mount and Blade games? I've never played them, and if there's a demo, am not in a position to try it before the sale ends. What type of gameplay am I looking at, and how do the games differ? From hearing others it sounds like there's little point to getting the original if you have Warband, and that the Fire and something sequel isn't worth it, but sometimes the changes between sequels that make some people like it more also make it inferior to others.

Is Tony hawks proving ground or project 8 good ? I like good controls i hate controls that hardly respond. Graphics i don't care about. Handling of the controls is key to me for the game to be great. Story i care about.

I do think Warband is the only one worth getting, but considering that the price for the whole package is 3 euros/dollars more than the price for Warband, you might as well get them all.

Warband is a lot of fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0RA9ALOJFs should give you a good impression of what the series is about. The largest difference with this and Warband is that Warband doesn't have guns and the setting is a little different. :P

It a sandboxy action RPG with a focus on medieval combat. Mounted combat on horses is a big part of it. There is no real main story, you can go around doing what you want. You can trade goods between cities, gather up an army, attack random people or different factions, raid villages or take over cities, take random quests for some gold, etc. It's pretty difficult and slow to begin with, but very rewarding as you level up and expand your army. Look up a few videos of the combat.

A bit of a thread necro here I suppose, but I figured I'd go ahead and use it rather than create an entirely new one.

GOG just released Gothic 3 and I was wondering if it was any good? It comes patched to the 1.6 community patch (and I think the latest is 1.7) so that should help with the bugs I'd imagine. Is the second one something worth picking up as well? I have tried the first one a while back but I gave up after having too many issues. Are there any mods for enhancing the visuals (2 or 3)?

I'd like to know that, as well.

Also, aside from the brilliant soundtracks, how are Icewind Dale I and II? I loved Baldur's Gate and was wondering if those would be a good pair of games for me.

I was wondering the same thing.

It's ok it could have been better, I hate games that requires you to finnish off an enemy and you're surrounded by other enemies who just won't stay down or leave you alone long enough to finnish off the down oppenet. Also I don't like the fact that the main character seems to be nagging you (you the player) during in between mission stage select screen. At most this game is a rental.

that was a bit of a revive but, does anyone know if I should get Skyrim? I usually hate Fantasty RPG's aside from DA:O, so I don't know if I can get into it or not after Oblivion (I disliked Oblivion greatly, or maybe i'm thinking of Morrowwind...) Is it any good?

If you didn't like Morrowind or Oblivion I doubt you will like Skyrim.

I liked one of the two, I just can't remember which one. The names are jumbled in my head.

Well in that case you might like it, I think Skyrim is the perfect mix of Oblivion and Morrowind.

Is Deus Ex: HR good? I didn't much like the gameplay of the first one. I like shooting games, RPG games, and to a lesser extent, stealthy type games. I won't mind the occasional bug or so, I am patient with my machines (most of the time). Games I've heard are similiar to this I like:
Metro 2033
The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises
Half-Life and Half Life 2 and their expansions

Edit: Boradam, what platform are looking into getting it for? I've heard PS3 is pretty laggy and the interface can be a pain to navigate on PC. No experience with 360 version. It plays a lot like Fallout 3, just with a different environment, obviously. So if you didn't like FO3 or FONV's gameplay I don't think you would like Skyrim.

I would reccomend playing Arkham Asylum first. It can be hard to tell if you'll like it considering that you haven't given us what you like and don't like in a game, but I would reccomend Arkham to almost anybody, even people who don't like Batman.

I loved Deus Ex: Human Revolution. By the end, I was kind of rushing to finally finish it up, but for most of the game, it was great.

360 and/or PC, I loved F:NV's Gameplay but not so much F3's as it was unbalanced quite a bit.

DX:HR is amazing, the perfect mix of stealth/passive routes and frontal combat opportunities, although you are forced to kill the bosses unfortunately. It was pretty clean, I think.

I haven't played HR, but it might be helpful to say what you didn't like about Deus Ex. It includes those three elements, so HR could easily qualify but also include whatever factors you disliked about the first.

Aside from the satisfying difficulty, what other merits does Dark Souls have? Story-wise, lore, graphics, replay value?
