There are so many ways to make money; it's almost hard to recommend just one specific way. You say you're getting a mining barge soon? By that I assume you mean an ORE mining barge? If so, be sure you're skilled enough to A.) pilot the ship and B.) use it to its fullest (be able to use modulated strip miner, to start with). Minerals are always in good demand (a lot of ships being manufactured out there need a whole lot of minerals) and you'll almost always get a good price for them. Odds are, you're just not mining very efficiently and not making a whole lot of ISK because of it.

Another popular way of getting cash is by running security missions. You'll only have level 1s open to you, which don't pay that well and aren't usually very exciting. The good part is that running missions increases corporation standing for the corp you're running for, which will unlock higher level missions and rewards via loyalty points, etc.

Personally, I make money by manufacturing various odds and ins (low-end ships, drones, some ammunition, etc.) and by playing the market a bit at that (selling high buying low). I run missions for fun, too, but my character's combat skills are less than amazing (most of my education has gone into mining/industry skills).

All of them, to be honest. I've never seen a time when there wasn't a demand for minerals. The difference is the value of the various minerals. Obviously, the most valuable come from the riskiest ores to mine (those found in 0.0 space, nulsec).
