Upgrade or Downgrade...or Bacon?

Post » Tue Jun 28, 2011 2:24 am

Hey. My friend had an Nvidia GEforce GTX 200 that he is giving me. I am aware that I need a new power supply, but I do not know if the GTX is better or worse than my ATI Radeon HD 5200. I do not want to buy a power supply to find out it is worse than my actual graphics card. I like Nvidia, and all of my friends (those that have half an idea of what they are doing anyway) are big Nvidia [censored]. the GTX 200 is a couple years older than my Radeon 5200 HD. I need an answer as soon as possible please. Also, If the GTX is an upgrade, is it worth it? (unrelated) bacon:crispy or floppy? (optional)

You need to be a bit more precise with the card names, since there is no GTX200 or ATI 5200 HD

There is a Geforce 200 series and a ATI 5xxx series(but no 5200), but there are many different cards in those lines. It could possibly be a downgrade.

Hope its a GTX 285, but really you need to post the full card names. Your current GPU sounds like its onboard (didnt check that) so naturally almost any dedicated card will be an improvement. But how much of an improvement remains to be seen...

Sorry about that, whenever I get a hardware question i always get the devices confused. in short, the card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 2xx series, and the radeon is of the 5xxx HD series. I can tell you that for sure.

Well in the GTX 2xx series alone you have the 210,220,230,240,250,260,270,275,280,285,295
There are many others in the 5xxx lineup.

I cannot tell you my specs off the top of my head, but I do know I am running off an ASUS essentio CG-1330-07 series at the moment, also I am having a bit of trouble posing fast enough...

Right, but like said definitely need more precise card names :)
A GTX275 would blow a HD 5450 out of the water for example, but if we're talking about a HD 5870 then that's an entirely different story.

EDIT: ok just saw your last post

That system has indeed a HD 5450, which is crap. So yeah if it's a GTX 275 or such it would definitely be an upgrade.

okay. thank you on that. now, I have 2 questions:
1. what power supply would i need to handle a new card?

2.there is no question number 2.

Depends on the model of the new card, assuming its a GTX 275 it would probably need atleast a good brand 500W-550W. (I always buy Corsair PSUs)

Only an American can come up with a location as "original" as this one. I will change it to my real location once my laziness wears off and i decide to do it.

well, I will see what it is when I get it. If it turns out to be a downgrade, I can give it to my friend or stick it in my older computer instead, whick is a step up from the motherboard's integrated graphics card.

It's because I do the eggs on top over the bacon. That kinda keeps 'em pliable..

Pliable is a whole different ball park. that is not floppy. it is bendy. interestingly enough, we changed the subject entirely, but we are still technically on the main topic.
