Mods are great and add lotsa cool stuff to the game BUT...

I haven't found anything worth building my new PC for just to play Skyrim.

I wouldnt build a computer just to play this game modded... I wanna play MVC3 but I'm not gonna go out and buy an xbox just ta play it.
I'd say just stick ta what u have and in time if the itch gets itchy enough then build your computer.

Sounds like he had no idea how to properly add mods....
This.

Some pick hundreds of mods and then are happy with it when the game can run them for 20 min without crashing. It is all they ever care about sometimes.
And some modders care as little about their mods as the players who install them.

I'm actually considering trying to somehow put money back to buy a decent PC so I can get Skyrim all modded out. I've never really felt this way about any other game except maybe Oblivion.

I don't know if this is good or bad.
There's so much potential. Maybe I really should start looking at these games as really good templates for modders. Maybe that would save me the disappointment.

There's no way I'm going to be able to save up really. Although I just woke up from a nap in which I was trying to, and I was Skyrim-style chopping wood to get monies.

It only cost me $540 to build a tower that can run Skyrim on Ultra. You don't really need a 2000 dollar rig to play.
Hope you can get your PC.

Even on the user side, modding your game is something of an art. Selecting the right blend of mods to create a consistent and balanced play experience and getting them to work together without conflicts is a little more complicated than it might seem.

Mods are definitely worth it. They can completely remake the game. Take anything you do not like about how the game works, and there is a good chance there is a mod out there that changes it. If not, you can make one yourself. Modding makes the game exactly what you want it to be. That is the beauty of them.

It may as well be the same price. I'm always that broke.
We were already given a built tower by my flatmate's friend so maybe there is something in that I can 'harvest'. I don't really understand how it works (building one up, I mean). I don't even know if the Witcher runs on it. Recently bought it but have been Skyrimming.

I will have the ultimate fear when it comes to working out mods though. Ha!

Heh... I'd like to be able to use mods for the game... BUT Bethesda just had to ruin everything by buying into the Steam nonsense.
Meh.

With thousands of mods available even if only one in a hundred appeals to you that's still a lot of added value.

I would suggest that mods can be broken down into three categories: Fixers; Enahancers; and comedy.

I've probably tried 50 or 60 mods, and have settled down with a couple of dozen that enhance my game in the way I like to see it. Most of them are 'additions', rather than fixers...which add more greenery, more people, bigger or enhanced towns, and a couple that enhance my houses and gear, with a couple of useful mods thrown in, such as horse enhancements.

I've found that some mods do cause issues, which will never be resolved, and if the issue ever gets to the point where it annoys me, then I ditch it.

though mods would be nice, the only thing i envy PC players for is hd texture packs... but hey, never had it, i'm not missing any thing then right?

Personally I would envy the difference in load times. I've now had the chance to watch people playing the 360 and PS3 versions. My god I would go insane if every time I opened a door I had to wait 30+ seconds. HD texture packs are nice and all but I would rather play Skyrim with Morrowind's graphics than spend what amounts to hours and hours of my life starring at the loading screen.

Thankfully the HD texture packs haven't effected my load times much.

Sounds like he had no idea how to properly add mods.... I had a fully modded Oblivion and there were no problems what so ever.
Mods are completely worth it *if you download the right ones and dont just download lolanimearmor* it makes the game so much more enjoyable.

Unless, of course, you enjoy "lolanimearmor".

The key is to find mods (from among the thousands and thousands, covering nigh-infinite topics) that you enjoy, and take the time to install them correctly.

Yes, as with all amateur work, some have flaws. And, of course, they can conflict with each other. But that doesn't mean you can't find a good set of mods that work well.

I would say reading through this thread that most people like mods....my reason for still pkaying a heavily modded Oblivion is that after closing a couple hundred gates and completing the game with several different characters I looked for mods which added quests and different items etc.....my only comment on mods is that during the learning process with mods the people making them usually correct problems that are reported and if you are patient and wait until you play the vanilla game all the way through and let them work the bugs out you will have better luck.....also I am not a big fan of NMM or any other loader but I will admit that some people should really use them....if you find yourself scratching your head wondering where to put files then you are a candidate for a loader.

...because of mods. However, I finally got to try out a bunch of Oblivion mods at a buddy's house, and to be honest, it was a giant mess. There were some cool ideas, but none, and I mean none of them worked the way they were supposed to. On top of that, many caused glitches and bugs that made the game so unstable you would think it was coded by a high school computer class.

Since then I looked to see what is available for Skyrim, and although exploding chickens would be humorous for a couple minutes, I haven't found anything worth building my new PC for just to play Skyrim. What is your opinion on mods? Are they more hassle than they are worth?

Honestly, I know what you mean. Most mods don't even feel like they belong in Skyrim, like the over the top cheesy armour, pervy mods, mods that make your weapons overpowered, referecnes to other game or sci-fi movies. Honestly, though, mods are worth it 1. They can make the game look amazing 2. Some mods actually genuanlly increase the quality of the game. 3. Mods can sometimes fix annoying bugs and bad gameplay decisions (such as making the UI console but not pc friendly.) Whatever your opinion of mods, its hard to argue with mods that make the game look better or run smoother

Mods is really like a two edged sword, on one side they can make your game experience totally awesome, but just as easy as they can make it awesome they can also reduce the experience to be nothing but a bore and annoyance.

For Skyrim I use 43 mods for the moment and have to constantly make sure they are loaded in correct order, and test them out whenever a new updated version arrives. As the mods is made by fellow players there is no mutual quality test that is done to ensure that they work together so that is the risk I take by using them. Just like building a PC from scratch can be a annoyance or pure fun mods can be both sides also. Personally I love them, I always play the game at least once without mods that changes game play and then I have fun with mods after. Simply because mods can make a lot of strange thing happen that shouldn't happen.

OOO+MMM does fix the level scaling issues vanilla Oblivion had, and it also adds the chance to meet enemies more powerful then yourself. It's not like there is no scaling at all, it's more balanced then vanilla oblivion and some mobs do scale still, but not to the extreme as it was in vanilla. So these mods do not remove level scaling totally, but they do change it a lot and make the game a far more enjoyable experience.

Modded TES games are a headache because of the things you mentioned. They have to have proper load orders, up to date, and other things.

So all you console gamers thinking PC TES is SOOOOoooooOOo great and wonderful, stay your butts where you are. Sure it's worth it, but its a tough road.
