Vampire and being underwater

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 2:25 am

It's just part of the old mythology about vampires. Garlic repulses them, crosses definitely repel them, they can't cross moving water, they can't enter a home without being invited, sunlight destroys them, and a stake through the heart destroys them. So does decapitation and, I think, burning. Holy water hurts them but I don't think it's ever represented as being fatal.

Most of those weaknesses would make being a vampire kinda lame and boring honestly i mean vamps call themselves the evolution of man yet can be killed by stuff like that seems weird.

Its not even just spells though, its any enchantment on your clothing/armor as well!

I never use enchanting as i don't really care for it but i do like what the perk does to already enchated stuff like the arch-mage robes i just wish there was a version without the hood.

I thought the correct term is undead as in once dead but now alive again so that means they can be made redead I suppose. Also from skeletons and draugr I think all undead actually breath air except maybe ghosts. They have that struggling breathing sound.

I think what people are forgetting is that these are Elder Scrolls vampires.

Vampire mythology is pretty much cemented by Bram Stoker's Dracula, running water/invitation didn't seem to be a problem for Dracula then.

No offence to anyone but i follow WoD vampire/werewolf/mage related stuff so when playing a game that has such things i put them up against WoD to see how they fair and i pretty much love my kindred. :]

I don't really like TES vamps all that much anyway, to me a vampire shouldn't be needing magic. There not mages or wizards.

But as far as the water breathing thing, I prefer the more modern versions of vampires and that would totally make since there. I mean they wouldn't die, but they wouldn't really function under water without breathing either.

I wish the vampires in TES was more like the WoD vampires :[

They killed the WoD off though, which was a damn shame, I'd of loved to have seen a VtM game this gen.

Aye that's what I meant Ezy, and to Norin, I wouldn't really mind since I don't spend that much time underwater.

There's not exactly anything worth finding below surface anyway.

It should be useable at any stage because becoming a stage 1 vamp doesn't mean your human again your still a full vamp and dead thus waterbreathing needs to be for all stages.

I found a sunken ship in the sea of ghost once.

I never played as a Vampire in Morrowind and I can't seem to remember whether you could breath underwater in Oblivion, anyone know?

I think this is an obvious oversight on Beth's part, it should get fixed with a patch imo.

There is a WoD MMO being developed, so keep your hopes up! I loved VTM:bloodlines, never played the tabletop but its a great universe... http://pc.ign.com/articles/122/1221543p1.html

On topic though,

I think its generally accepted that "lesser" undead (zombies, skeletons, etc) can live in aerobic environments, but more "advanced" undead (liches, vampires) require some level of an atmosphere.

Another thing to think of is maybe vampires get waterlogged when underwater too long, so just like humans, the lung space (and rest of body cavity) fill with water, making it harder to surface.

You'd think if nothing else Volikhar have to have waterbreathing, given their strategies outlined in Immortal Blood.

It may not be though, BS kind of creates there own vampire lore... and in some vampire mythology this does make sense.

I guess it really depends on your view of the whole vampire mythology, some of the mythology says that vampires are dead, but there hearts still beat and bodies act normally as long as they drink blood. So in that sense they would still need to breath, but they wouldn't necessarily die from not breathing... if that makes sense to you.
So wouldnt the final form of vampirism give the ability to breathe underwater?

Why should it? I mean TES Vamps are weird anyway because a vampire shouldn't get stronger with no blood, they should get weaker... but stage 1 or stage 4 there body will still function the same way.

I thought the WoD mmo was based on the new WOD not the old.

I spose Volkihar should technically be able to breath underwater, as they seemed to almost be water specific vampires.

On the topic of sea creatures, I remember being scared of open water in videogames for a long time due to Ultima 9's sea monsters that would randomly appear when you were close enough, shame that there hasn't really been another game to instill that fear of open seas

The WoD mmo is being based of off the masquerade version which im happy that it is because if it wasn't i wouldn't have even tried it out becuse i dislike the rebooted version.
