It might not be your fault per se but before you go slicing off heaping chunks of blame pie and distributing them willy-nilly it may be looking at your set-up and seeing whether there is anything wrong.

Have you, for instance, tried installing the game somewhere else?

Your "fault" is that you seems to be more interested to blame Bethesda on this forum than finding a real solution to "your problem" -like i've said above.

You said previously that you played on a 1600x900 screen resolution. Is your computer a laptop? Did you install the most recent driver for your card? If yes, did you try to play the game with the driver that was originally installed in your computer when you bought it?

I'm asking because I'm playing on a laptop and I can't use the most recent AMD drivers with it. When I say that I can't, it means that the new drivers don't fit my card. I must play the game with a driver that dates back to 2009 and I'm happy with it.

Ok, so, you have a GTX 285 Vid card.

What is your power supply rated at?

Where is the game installed to?

How much RAM do you have?

What Operating system?

What is the stop code for the error you are getting? Is it referencing your vid card?

If you want help to solve this, we need a LOT more information.

I would like to mention that I have the same exact video card & similar power supply - BFG GeForce 285 & Corsair 850W. This particular card by BFG is factory overclocked to 701mhz or so. I have had a lot of issues with this card until I downloaded EVGA Precision and downclocked the speeds. I downclocked to the nVidia default values of 648mhz for the Core Clock & 1242mhz for the Memory Clock and all is well for the last 3+ years I've owned this card. EVGA Precision can also be used to speed up the factory fan speed of 30%, to 60% which may help, especially in the summer.

Also, I have noticed the problem with video card drivers "not responding" is to be an issue with the driver not being able to handle what you are throwing at them, whether it's trying to play a high quality HD MP4 video on an on-board VGA with 1024x768 resolution or playing a game on an overclocked video card. Seriously, try slowing down your video card.

And before anyone asks, I am not running a killer setup - Win XP with an Intel 8400 (3ghz, 1333FSB) & 3gb PC3200 ram & 160GB IDE hard drive.

If downclocking your video card doesn't work, try this: Change the compatibility mode of TESV.exe in your Skyrim directory to Win98. The frames per second may not be as much as you're used to, but you can ALT-TAB out of the game, go to Task Manager and set the affinity of TESV.exe to use all the cores of your CPU.

Windows7 has a nasty habit of doing those driver crashes/recoveries. I get them as well on my machine, but at the weirdest times; often watching a youtube video or video file on my harddrive.

It seems the issue is due to Windows7's Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) system. Do a google search on that and see that it happens in all kinds of situations, gaming and otherwise.

Perhaps try fiddling with the TDR values in the registry as outlined in Method#3 in the following link:

Well see it throws that error because inside the game it starts flashing black and then back to game and then black again. I'm a programmer so I know a little about how those things work. Yea windows may throw the error, but the problem is the game is not handling the interior cells. Even if I block out the TDR it would still crash/not play inside.

I also tried downclocking my card to no avail

TC, I had the exact card you have for a couple years. I noticed that in some games the screen would go black for a few seconds then come back, other games would flat out crash. The driver error was there on all of them. Also the error was more common on less graphic intensive games. Oblivion would do the black screen thing, but wouldn't crash. After quitting the game the driver error bubble would be there. Fallout 3 would flat out crash with that driver error, and only indoors(less graphic intensive). I found that fallout 3 would work perfectly with an old driver, pre 190 I believe. Later on after trying new drivers again, the problem came back. I downloaded MSI afterburner, which is an overclock tool, but it also monitors all sorts of settings on your GPU. I discovered that in the middle of some games, the card was downclocking itself to 2d speeds (400Mhz). This was a feature added in the 190 series, which is why the older driver worked. The solution was actually really simple. All I had to do was make sure power management in my Nvidia control panel was set to "PREFER MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE". I never had another problem again. If this doesn't work, and I know you seem to not want to believe it, I do believe the issue is with your card either hardware or driver related.

Aw I really thought that was gunna work. Still no fix. It's not slowing down the clock or anything, but it's jumping to 100 percent gpu usage whenever the screen goes black, i don't know if that helps at all. Thanks for help tho
