HH was disappointing

I just finished HH and frankly, it was kind of disappointing. The first play through i did, the entire caravan died and i thought i [censored] up and assumed it to be an extremely difficult DLC. I continued down the path, but the game bugged and (Can't remember his name ATM, your first companion) bugged and he didn't show up so i got the quest that led me to the map and i was just like wtf... fail. So i did it again and the caravan died again. I watched a few video's online and found out it was supposed to happen and the companion showed up this time so i played through. What i found it to be was just a scavenger quest... running back and forth between the map and up and down the cliffs. I was expecting to at least MEET THE NEW CANAANITES! so much talk about them and only 2 are in the entire [censored] DLC... The ending was seriously pretty lame... i had hoped if would have some permanent effect to main FO:NV if i let them stay in Zion to trade.

And here i thought the saying was: "What happens in VEGAS, stays in Vegas" not Zion...

I liked it, and liked it better than Dead Money. But I dont get what you are saying, you were disappointed because you didn't meet New Canaanites but Daniel and Joshua was not "enough"?

You do know there are side quests in HH right? I got a feeling you zipped through the DLC without realizing the different areas to explore, the quests, easter eggs and wild wasteland traits that I found and admire the work they put into this DLC. I am not trying to be a jerk but keep that in mind.

No, i did the other stuff. I even went into all the caves, i told that first companion to go out and explore, i told the woman about her husband, i led the calf back. I did ALL the quests. I just found it to be a LONG walk in the canyon especially the last part to kill Salt-upon-wounds -____-. I'm disappointed not because Joshua and Daniel weren't enough, i'm disappointed because they talk so much about the New Canaanites and they are barely there... I was just expecting an adventure and what i got was a to-do list before i could go home. Also, that whole entrance and having the whole caravan die caused a little confusion towards the introduction to the zone. The entire motive(maybe not the right word) for the DLC from that moment was just to go back, not follow the caravan to see exciting stuff.

I'm surprised people don't realise the caravan's supposed to die. Just listen to what they say when they and their friends die, it's really quite sad and well-written.

Kudos to Chris Avellone and the rest of the writing department!

You mean like how fallout 3's plot was
go to megaton.
go to GNR
go to Rivet City
go find your dad
go to the citadel
go kill the enclave

or how fallout New Vegas's plot was
go to primm
go to nipton
go to novac
go to boulder city
go to vegas
pick a side

ALL RPG quests are nothing more then a glorified to-do list. Hating Honest hearts for it being a simple fetch quest is basically hating every RPG ever made.

I cannot barely put into words how wrong you are, but I'll try.

A "fetch quests" involves going from point A to point B, then bringing something from point B pack to point A. If you really think that is all an RPG boils down to, I am a bit surprised. Aside from going from point A to point B in New Vegas there are:

Speech checks
Barter checks
Dialogue Trees
Gambling
Combat
Trading
Exposition
Lockpick Challenges
Hacking Challenges

All of those things only serve to put more stuff between you and the items your supposed to be getting. The game it still start in point A, then take info and go to pointd B,C,D,E,F to get more info to find point G to get item X to take to person H. Its still a fetch quest. just a fetch quest with dialog that tries to hinder you getting item X. Also fetch quests are not necessarily A,B then back to A. They can be person A asks you to get item X and take it to person B. That still counts as a fetch quest.

The one and only part about the HH DLC I don't like is the near 10 month round trip between Zion and the Mojave. It's really strange that Caesar's Legion and the NCR will sit there making funny faces at each other while the courier is on vacation for such a long time.

It wasn't 10 months it was at most several weeks to get there and several weeks back so maybe like 2 months total.

Unless you wish to go back to Zion for a vacation. The second return trip takes 10 months with trips after that being two weeks each way. Why is a mystery.

It's just dumb that the courier, after doing the trip the first time with no problems, goes into stupid mode and becomes lost for 10 months if he/she wishes to return to Zion. Meanwhile the Mojave just sits there and twiddles it's collective thumbs waiting on the courier to return.

Actually, once you get the hang of it:
Go to Vegas.
Pick a side.

or:

Go to Primm.
Go through Primm Pass to Novac.
Go to Vegas.
Pick a side.

Yup, how many RPG's are there that doesn't have the "to-do list" formula really?
I think Deus Ex' story evolves as you play so it don't really feel as a to do list but as a coherent story all the way through.

I rarely go into any of these with preconceived expectations. HH was entertainment. Was it perfect? Of course not, but it did provide a diversion from the Mohave for a while. Plus a few good items to bring back to NV.

I would think that taking an early level character to HH would have the advantage of bringing back some of the better "finds" to use for the majority of the NV quests. Doing this almost assures a different experience in the Mohave.

The caves and outside locations allowed for some good exploration (though I still long for large explorable and enemy occupied buildings in the future) and it kept my attention for 4-5 days of on and off gameplay.

The tried and true formulas of "fetch quests" and "kill and loot" still work after all these years, because they are at the heart of most RPGs. Nothing groundbreaking in HH, but an extension of the NV landscape with some more to do and some more to kill and loot.

I was disappointed as well, which surprised me. Even after reading (without spoilers) about it, I thought, well, it's gotta be good though, right? But I was disappointed in the character of Graham, Daniel did nothing for me, and the only person I ever felt sorry for was Salt-Upon-Wounds, and that's because he begged for mercy. The character development just didn't go anywhere for me. I felt like I went everywhere, though clearly I missed something if there was a calf to resume. I may have missed a few caves as well, but I listened to everything Daniel and Joshua had to say, and in the end, I didn't feel like they were people... not in the way that Caesar, Mr. House, or any of the other main characters from the main game. It's not that I feel ripped off. Just let down. It was mildly entertaining, but not particularly engaging. I will try again at some point and perhaps have a different opinion. That all said, I absolutely loved the character depth and exploration in Dead Money. That was my favorite DLC for any game, EVER. Which, around here I know is quite a minority perspective.

HH was ok at best. Recycled all the weapon sounds and animations, the survivalist rifle felt the best. The 45's felt exactly the same as the 9mm and the 9mm SMG. Why bother even doing dlc guns if they are just reskined versions of existing ones. The story was fine but it moved fast and ended very abruptly. Not much side stuff to do it felt almost rushed with a lackluster amount of content. I also did not care for canyon scouting and almost zero interaction with the tribes. I feel if I would have waited for a sale I may have enjoyed the DLC more. All in all not bad,but not worth 10$ though.

Edit: One of the main reasons I enjoy fallout is the pre war atmosphere. Not much of that to partake in HH.

This sums up pretty much how I feel. Except for feeling bad for Slat-Upon Wounds, I killed him without even thinking. But anyway, Dead Money was amazing, the best fallout DLC ever imo. Mostly because of the characters and the mystery and the fend for yourself survival feeling. :D

My only beef with DM was crappy weapon additions. It was great other then that little complaint. I just wish they would do DLC that effects stuff in the Mojave itself. Not just one off crap with no impact other then a bit of loot and 5 levels.

Damn, I think he pretty much hit the nail on the head. The orientation of the quests in HH was mainly, find this, this and that
Spoiler
so that we can high tail it outta here. The yao guai hunting mission was fun to take different approaches to obliterate the mutated bears but those few missions including "Advanced Scouts" and "The Treacherous Road" were both aimed at clearing a passage out of Zion. I just got there and everyone is telling me how much I want to leave! it's the other way around! without the wiki I probably never would have found all the quests because my game bugged up and I did not have the "tick markers" on my compass to find the locations

But don't get me wrong, there were a few cool things about Zion. It was a beautiful stretch of terrain and the "father in the caves" story was really awsome but somethings about the New Canaanites like Joshua bugged me
Spoiler
There is an intense build up of a shroud of mystery around him but in the game he loses it because he pretty much drones on for thirty minutes about his life's story.

And the white legs? why is Daniel so afraid to take the tribes in to battle against an enemy frankly the courier could take on by himself?

Zion valley was an awesome place to explore and thank god for .45 and it's availability in the mojave

Spoiler
And pleeaasse obsidian if you are going to make it so that you can return to a dlc location after it is complete it, atleast make it so that there is something to do there, If all the quests are failed after you take the final one and the two tribes just sit in their camps after then what is the point in going back?

I felt badly because he was being executed and begged for his life. That made me wonder about his motivations. I'd never heard his life story as I had everyone else's. Made me wonder about his perspective. Then I had him get up and I killed him.

The HH DLC was fun just a little to short. I would of liked to spend more time doing missions there and getting to know more people other than just Danial and the Buring man.
This is a very fun DLC pack and I prefer it to DM. I like the idea of a tribal wasteland.

I didn't find it too bad. I too was a little confused when the caravan got offed right off the hop... and I agree that the part I liked the most was survivalist cache hunt. ...Reason being, I like fallout games for the post apocalyptic aspect (which that part had a hint of). Unfortunately it seems that the games seem to be straying further and further from that feel. In fallout 3, (as trivial as it may seem), one of the parts I enjoyed the most was when Moira sends you to check out the near-by grocery store for food supplies. ...sneaking into a dark, depleted, grocery store where raiders have taken up residence... I thought was very cool, (and the type of task you would expect in a post-apocalyptic game). ....I want to be sauaging ruined cities. ......Being held captive by a hologram in a fountain, and looting a casino to earn your release... not so much. Being beamed aboard alien space crafts, or completing war simulations in anchorage alaska.. well, it kinda loses that feel. ....or for that matter, running through canyon trails, completing tasks for for a religious cult.... hmmm...... I realize groups like that could exist, but this felt more like being thrown back to the 1800's and helping a group of Comanche Indians get settled in New Mexico. I still had fun playing it, but I'm wanting that post apocalyptic feel back.

You just defined what RPG is,

Explore,Loot,Choose, and a "to do list"

The less thing that I want is a simulator or being aducted by aliens again, thats so off from Fallout, and the Alien thing it doesn even makes any sense! I expect that from X-COM, but for Fallout I expect different, choose and consequenses, not just an excuse for loot and have "epic" battles

As for the apocalyptic feel, Fallout 3 was the one and only game with that feeling, not even the first Fallout does have that feel and it happened 80 years after the great war, IMO the Fallout 3 atmosphere is the wrong atmosphere, 200 years has been passed, yet everything is in ruins, and the green tint in the sky doesnt help either
