Weapons knockback

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 6:29 pm

One of my favorite features of the Rocket Launcher in the classic Fallout games is that it would plow enemies into the ground, often sending them sliding a couple body lengths before they pulled themselves back up again. The strategic potential this gave, coupled with the generally much higher damage/HP ratio in the first game compared to the sequels, made big explosives a force to be reckoned with. Fallout 3 was sorely lacking in this regard in that enemies generally didn't even budge when hit by explosive weapons unless they were killed on impact. I'm really hoping that New Vegas makes weapons knockback a lot more common as it adds both to the realism of the game and makes these weapons more fun to use.

Thoughts?

Some sort of physics on explosions would be nice. Not sure if your talk of strategy from the originals has any carrying in the current design, though.

If Super Mutants are charging you at close range, I'm sure being able to blast them back a dozen feet would have some strategic usage.

But don't have them just sliding 12 feet away... like they fly 12 feet away, on the ground, and get up, right?

I would like if someone is charging you full speed and you shotgun the top of their chest point blank they get knocked on their butt if they don't die instantly.

Knockback would get annoying if it worked for enemies too. Imagine getting knocked down every couple seconds in an intense fight. If it doesn't work for enemies, then it would be a little overpowered. I like the concept, but there seem to be some problems.

Pretty sure they added knockback to melee attacks (I read it somewhere). Don't know about explosives, though it would make some sense.

You wouldn't be knocked down every couple of seconds because not everyone is going to be using a Fat Man or Rocket Launcher. Enemies generally get up fast enough that it doesn't dominate gameplay, and ammo for these weapons is rare enough that you can only use them in crucial moments anyways.

Besides, it's technically been done in Fallout 3 before (with the http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Gauss_Rifle_(Fallout_3) critical effect) and it worked fine. This would just give the effect to more realistic weapons.

The laws of physics have a dim view of ballistic weapon knockbacks where the firer is not also knocked back.....every reaction has an equal and opposite reaction = If you fire a shotgun and your enemy gets knocked down from the force alone so do you.

Explosive weapons ok, regular guns no.

Agreed, tho I did like how if a mutant wailed on you with a supersledge you would be moved and have a stunned feel to the controls for a sec or 2.

I hate to say it but MW2 shell shock effects made being hit or too close to an explosion that much more dangerous, something like that I think would add to the Fallout RPG experience.

I think there Was a video of the Courier getting hit by a Bighorn and knocked back if they have Knockbacks for the Courier they might also have it for Npc's.

Criticals could do that. I wouldn't like people flying unrealisitcally far away, just fall on their back/ass. Imagine someone running in full speed at you, you shoot him in the chest (and kills him) and he fall down on his back but he's flying towards you (because he had more force pushing him from behind) and lands on his neck. Since this is a game, even more so an RPG with HP, DR, DT and what not, he'd get up like nothing happened and attack you again (though maybe crippled).

The knockback effect is a good idea....but in my opinion it would need alot of thought to implement properly, because it would make the game easier & i don't want easier.
The gauss rifle is a classic example of that....because i played stealth/sniping characters i had alot of luck & perks that went with it ( for critical hits ) once i did that & used the gauss rifle, the game became even easier.I would almost have 100% knockdown effect...even though it was fun & gave me some funny moments, it was too easy & i did'nt fear any enemy at all after that, the only enemy it did'nt knockdown was a mirelurk hunter.
Like i said i like the idea ,it makes the game more realistic & fun,but it would have to be done in a way that does'nt make the game easier :)

You're missing the point; if there is enough force in a shotgun blast to knock someone down, then an as strong force would hit the person holding the shotgun, thereby knocking him down as well!

Thing is, there isn't. A shotgun blast will NEVER knock someone down by the sheer force of the blast in the way that you see it in the movies.

during a video i saw the anti-material rifle it knocks u back a little because of the recoil

besides most guns, ecspeically shotguns, have a recoil pad and recoil spring that lessen the recoil

also, ur ready for the punch

the enemy is running at u hes not ready to be hit by such a punch

i have been shoot while having a bullet proof vest on by a 9mm pistol and it feels like being hit by a baseball bat, its crazy

Except there is no knockback in the first place. Mythbusters tested that extensively; even if you hit someone squarely in the chest with a full shotgun blast, the force of impact won't even make them stumble, it'll knock them back less than an inch.

also, ur ready for the punch

I repeat; there is no knockback! None! It doesn't matter if you're ready or not.

Is this some kind of joke? Physics! It's the most basic elementary physics!

If the person is moving towards you, you'd need an even greater force to cancel out his momentum and propel him backwards!

i have been shoot while having a bullet proof vest on by a 9mm pistol and it feels like being hit by a baseball bat, its crazy

...and the impact from a baseball bat, swung by your average person, is not particularly big. You can get hit squarely in the chest with a round from an AK-47 at point blank range, and you wouldn't be knocked back. The kinetic energy of a rifle or shotgun round is much too small.

If firing a gun had the same kinetic force on both parties (person being shot/shooter) NOBODY would use them! Granted your right in that theres always a equal and opposite force but thankfully guns DO take most of that wheather its a shotgun or a handgun or whatever. There's feeling the slight drawback after firing and most of its been absorbed into the stock of the gun and its internal springs and being on the wrong end of it feeling the slug crack your ribs. The projectile being fired is carrying so much force and momentum behind it Im seriously surprised that mythbusters said it barely knocked them back (unless is just tears right through them) in which case letting shotguns and bigger caliber guns knock people back in a certain distance from the user should be fine as far as physics are concerned. Saying a shotgun slug though won't knock a person down though is ridiculous, I just can't see it unless its just going strait through them because its going to fast.

This, and only from a rocket launcher or something along those lines. Grenades knocking people down would make the game too easy.

Actually that "drawback" your talking about (which I am assuming you mean recoil) is caused by expanding gases when the bullet is fired. The gases (in semi-automatic /full auto weapons at least) push the slide back so a new round enters the chamber, which is a reason why the reaction isnt as great. I believe thats correct, not sure.

bein hit by a round will not knock u back but it will at put u off balance causing u to possibally fall down u wont be blown back but it will stop some of ur momentum

there is recoil and taking an aggersive stance when firing a gun lets u control the weapon

let me hit u with a baseball bat and then tell me about how minimal it is, u can easily kill someone if u hit them in the head

u have to be incredabaly stupid if dont know that when u fire a gun there is recoil
