Good points. This would make the alien blaster a more mainstream weapon. I still think tinkering with things not of this Earth should have consequences. You know to make the experience interesting. Like if you don't have quite the skill level to make the item, it becomes unstable and it explodes

.
I'm thinking that it would require 100 Energy Weapons as a soft requirement to wield properly, and the lower EW skill you have the higher the chance is that the entire MFC clip you have in it just goes *poof*.
So say you can load up 70 MFC in it, that's 7 shots, and you don't meet the soft requirement, then you can, if you're unlucky, waste the entire 70MFC and the weapon won't even shoot properly.
The Luck stat would also play a role in it, for each 5 you don't have in EW you receive a 2% chance of this happening, and each Luck below 5 means 4% chance of this critical failure.
So 20EW skill and 1 Luck means that you have a 40% chance of this critical failure happening.
Might be too much scripting/coding required but I think it oughta balance itself out.
Means you have to have max EW and Luck 5+ for this to not happen at all.
