What did Skyrim do betterworse than Oblivion?

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 2:42 pm

This thread is about what Skyrim did better than Oblivion, and what Skyrim did worse than Oblivion.

Better:

- Alchemy. I love the discovery mechanism. Although we need more alchemical effects...

- World. It's so BEAUTIFUL. I love the Falkreath region.

- Dungeons. They don't svck this time.

- Music. So... much... Soule... :cryvaultboy:

- Graphics

- Walking Animation. It looks natural, finally.

- Smithing. Much better than the armorer skill.

- Non-hostile wildlife. Makes the world more believable and allows me to RP a hunter.

- Voice actors. Although I miss Michael Mack (redguards) and Wes Johnson (imperials) from Oblivion.

- Archery. I feel like Legolas now!

- Dragons. They are kewl.

Worse:

- Guilds. College of Winterhold and Companions are epic fails.

- Magic. I want spell creation back!

- Factions. Errr... we don't have very many.

- Money sinks. I miss an arena to gamble all my money at.

- Attributes. I liked some of the things attributes affected like run speed and melee damage.

- Houses. Oblivion had a larger selection. I want a house in Falkreath, damnit!

- NPC's. They seem too lifeless in Skyrim. I miss the goofy Mudcrab conversations.

- Skooma. +25 stamina? Really?

Now it's your turn. :starwars:

I have to disagree about the NPCs. While they don't talk as much as they used to, I much prefer those conversations to make sense.

Better-
-Everything you said
-Environments are alot more detailed

Worse
-Hand holding
-Vague Journal entries
-Freedom. Being forced into some guilds and the main quest if you try to avoid it
-Generic NPC's
-Generic quests
-The ending
-Guilds,Guilds are a joke and are way to short. The stories are pretty good but they are executed very badly (With the execption of the Dark Brotherhood to an extent)
-Cities. Morthol,Dawnstar,(Winterhold Maybe) are incredibly small.
-Beast races (Except for the new detail which is really well done) They feel Almost forgotten in some areas like when they sit their tails go through the chair/bench.
-Skills. With the addition of perks it makes skills useless Ex) 100 blade, no perks, is weaker then any level with 1 perk.

One thing I like is walking in and out of a cave without having to open a door. Makes it more realistic.

Better:
  • More hand-crafted gameworld
  • Better dungeons (though still too short and linear in my opinion)
  • Significantly improved character models
  • Crafting (even if it is imbalanced, it's a step forward for the series)
  • Archery
  • Large(ish) scale battles (compare the battles in the Civil War questline to the battle for Bruma in Oblivion. HUGE improvement)
...and the big one for me:
  • Toned down level-scaling
Worse:
  • Factions (questlines are disappointingly short, with no real sense of progression through the ranks)
  • Character development / levelling (incredibly lacking without attributes and with skill progression so reliant on perks)
  • UI (Skyrim's UI feels awkward and looks completely out of place in a fantasy game)
  • Soundtrack (that isn't to say Skyrim's soundtrack is bad. I just consider Oblivion's soundtrack to be a lot better)
  • Armour (even with crafting added, the merged pieces and lack of degradation were disappointments for me)
  • Setting (this one is more personal preference than anything, but Skyrim's setting really didn't do much for me at all. Oblivion, for me, had much more charm).
  • Hand-holding (was pretty bad in Oblivion, but seemed even worse in Skyrim. They're really taking this accessibility crap too far and it's having a detrimental effect on the quality of the game).

I forgot about that. I liked this as well, it was way better than the battle of Bruma.

I think I'd have to put character design at the top of my list. Take a look at a picture of an orc or a bosmer from Oblivion. Go on, you won't believe how stupid they look.

Well, what I miss that has been taken out during the series....

Soul gems telling you what is trapped inside of them.

Putting almost litterly any enchantment on an item (for good or bad). Rings that shoot fire balls, rings that summoned Golden Saints, swords that turned into bound weapons when you hit someone with one...

Guilds actualy making you be something to advance... You couldn't advance unless you had certain stats high enough, and skills needed to be high, with a couple other being decent. It doesn't make since to be the master theif or arch mage, and never have stolen something or casted a spell. The quest lines actualy making you feel like your are bettering the guild.

Attributes.... They really allowed your characters to all feel different while you played them.

Mark, Recall, Intervention, detect magic, open lock spells... along with most the other utility spells that have been cut along the way

Spellmaking... really helped fill the gaps between power levels. Skyrim destruction just doesn't stay tuned to the world around it, and cant combine spell effects

The missing "disable" spells like drain and damage stats or weaknesses. Hell Skyrim slaughtered the spells totaly IMHO.

Being able to sort items in your inventory by weight, gold, attack. The little icons that let you see if something is stolen, poisoned, enchanted..

Ug.. how could I forget being able to kill anyone you damned well felt like. If you killed someone you shouldn't have, you get the little message telling you ops...

What Skyrim got better in..

Two weapon fighting...
Archery is actualy good now..
Graphics and animations...
I like being able to forge items instead of just repair them
The dungeons feel more unique and different.

I like Skyrim a lot, but I miss a lot of things from the "old" days...

The graphics are a BIG thing for me, it looks ten times better. I also love the vastness of everything, but I do not like how side quest are bothersome because they do not give you very much info when you click them in your menue.

you do have a lot of good points: I'm a mage as well and I'd like more spells (like Oblivion) or at least the possibility of making spells.

One complaint I have is that the world isn't 'epic' enough. I don't mean it's uninteresting or poorly designed, it's just small. It feels like I'm in an amusemant park(which is fun), not a country.

They were smart to make quest objectives always on the complete opposite side of the map from where your at, as it extends the time you are traveling, and gives you a sense of scale, but that's just a clever illusion to hide a small map.

I just wish things were more spaced out, and that I wasn't running into caves and ruins every five feet.

Better:
You can forge just about anything in skyrim.
You can walk while encumbered in skyrim.
Overall better looks in skyrim.
leveling up is easier.
Race balance seems better as far as I can tell.
Many more perks available.
followers.
Dragons.
Werewolves.

Worst:
Alot of perks seem useless considering what some of the other perks offer.
Less skills and some skills changed for the worst(no more blade blunt hand2hand now its 1handed or 2handed).
No difference in playing different genders.
Leveling up was wierd in oblivion but it was better IMO.
Pestle & Mortar are better than alchemy tables.
Effect unlock is better than fishing in the dark to see what matches or eating ingridients, too much waste.
Spell selection is better in oblivion.
Light and heavy armor sets are even in oblivion(6 of each), in skyrim 8 sets for heavy and 6 for light.
Cant forge a mage staff.
Weapons tied in with armor perks but do not match armor progression.
No more Silver weapons.
Spells must be equipped like weapons.
Favorite system slows down the game alot.
changing weapons in combat is slower.
menu and quest log are worse.

Theres probably more things that I find better in skyrim that I just cant think of atm becuase I cant play it right now /ps3user QQ

I am in the minority here. I LOVED the graphics in OB. I still think it's one of the most beautiful games. Maybe because I bought everything to upgrade my computer to finally play it on the highest settings? I miss the different styles of the cities in OB though.

But Skyrim has much better dungeons. I miss the guilds in Morrowind!

Skyrim tho has given me a great play though, I find myself absorbed into the simplest of things. It definitely has me more absorbed than OB. I will play this game for a long time to come, but I find myself taking longer breaks.

Basically Skyrim has a lot more immersive world and it feels waaaaaaaay more alive. It also improved on the design of almost anything (weapons, spells, clothes). Combat and sneaking, most of the basic gameplay is extensively better.

The thing I miss is the guild ranks and such. Also random NPC conversation (NOT THAT THIS WAS GOOD IN OBLIVION...but it's better then only scripted ones)

oblivion:

quests

weapon/armor degradation

spellmaking

attributes

high end weapons and armor (except glass its butt ugly in both games)

skyrim:

combat

magic (how it feels to use it but i still miss spellmaking)

game world dungeons, cities etc.

main quest i like better even if the final battle was .......underwhelming.

low tier weapons and armor.

This thread is about what Skyrim did better than Oblivion, and what Skyrim did worse than Oblivion.

Better:

- Alchemy. I love the discovery mechanism. Although we need more alchemical effects... (agree)

- World. It's so BEAUTIFUL. I love the Falkreath region. (Orly? Falkreath depresses me. Always raining!)

- Dungeons. They don't svck this time. (But most seem like a repeat/back track of others. coughnordruinscough

- Music. So... much... Soule... :cryvaultboy: (agree, but I hate when I'm swimming and a Slaughterfish follows me to atk me. And when I get on land the musics all freaking out like I'm in an EPIC Battle.. yet I'm just trying to avoid a FISH! -.O

- Graphics (Yes, beats even Fallout 3's. 1080p HDMI truly brings out the full spectrum of Skyrim. Makes a HUGE diff.)

- Walking Animation. It looks natural, finally. (IDK.. jumpings kinda weird... lol)

- Smithing. Much better than the armorer skill. (True, but it's so easy to manipulate. Warrior Stone ftw?)

- Non-hostile wildlife. Makes the world more believable and allows me to RP a hunter. (Agree, I love them. And the little thorax bugs, dragonflies, etc.)

- Voice actors. Although I miss Michael Mack (redguards) and Wes Johnson (imperials) from Oblivion. (They're alright, I think I hear a couple Anime characters voices time and time again..)

- Archery. I feel like Legolas now! (Sneak made Archery so simple. I'd rather chop my enemies now..)

- Dragons. They are kewl. (Until you have 4-5 of them attack you after FT'ing to a locale. I'm talking Alduin, a White Dragon, Blood Dragon, and "Dragon" that was ressed BY Alduin! Then tell me your thoughts on how kewl they are... -.O)

Worse:

- Guilds. College of Winterhold and Companions are epic fails. (College is 10x better then the Companions. /end)

- Magic. I want spell creation back! (110% agreed)

- Factions. Errr... we don't have very many. (I want a TRUE Warriors Guild. Not a bunch of mangy Werewolves who think they're the only sellswords in ALL of Skyrim. pfft.)

- Money sinks. I miss an arena to gamble all my money at. (Not missed here. Never messed around with stuff like that..)

- Attributes. I liked some of the things attributes affected like run speed and melee damage. (Nope)

- Houses. Oblivion had a larger selection. I want a house in Falkreath, damnit! (True. I'm hoping we get at least 2 more from DLC's)

- NPC's. They seem too lifeless in Skyrim. I miss the goofy Mudcrab conversations. (Way agreed.. Have you been to the Cloud District lately? OH WHAT AM I SAYING?! Of course you haven't! :D)

- Skooma. +25 stamina? Really? (Yes rly.)

Now it's your turn. :starwars:

Better:

Mudcrabs. They are now as dangerous as the NPC conversations in Oblivion said they were.

Worse:

Mudcrabs. More specifically, no crab meat. I want to eat a crab, not just use its shell in potion making.

Better:

Radiant quests for further RPing

Certain functions brought back from previous ES (ie Enchanting as a skill, public transportation, certain hand placed loot)

Advancements in AI, radiant and otherwise

Certain details in the world, expanding on believability, though title specific

Other things mentioned in the OP

Cons:

You know them

ya, what the hell is up with that anyway, it's something they had down already. It makes the game feel so half-assed, more like 3/4-assed as it has some improvements but this degrading of game quality in some aspects is unexusable. Any one that tells you that they have a logical explanation for these loose ends is lieing, Bethesda just did not give a damn. Very disappointed in that aspect.
