What does it mean to be a true ninja?

Post » Sat Jun 11, 2011 1:04 am

This annoying rich kid at school boasts that his dad is a ninja just because he owns several katanas and nunchuks. (spelling?)
I'm quite sure you are not a ninja just if you own some weapons associated with ninjas.
So what does it mean to be a true ninja?

To be a true ninja, it's paramount that nobody knows you're a ninja. Hence, this kid's father is not a ninja, unless this is some kind of elaborate double-bluff going on. :P

Ninjas were not super soldiers who wielded all sorts of special weapons like nunchucks or katanas. They were spies, undercover agents, and assassins; carrying such flashy, expensive, and often prohibited weaponry was a good way to draw attention to yourself. Nor did they dress in black, which was just a convention derived from Japanese theatre. More than anything, ninjas would be dressed as some nobody or other, a servant, or a common citizen. If they had to kill someone, a simple knife or application of poison would often suffice.

To be a covert agent/mercenary in Feudal Japan. Pretty much a modern day spy/assassin is a ninja.

Also, this man cannot be a ninja unless he is a double ninja agent of death who publicly gives away his identity but others believe its too foolish to take seriously so he is doubted and ignored, while being a ninja.

No, I'm pretty sure he's legit. He's just not a very good one, made apparent by his son bragging about his status at school.

nin·ja /?ninj?/
Noun: A person skilled in ninjutsu.

Edit: Who brags off of the 'accomplishments' of others?

His son is a brat.
He acts like a complete smart ass. Like correcting the teacher with [censored] confidence, bragging about how much money he has.
Another thing that gets on my nerves at school is that everyone calls katanas samurai swords.
I don't call an M16 an army gun

Best advice I can give is to ignore him. Let him do his thing while you do your own. Also, ninjas mostly used a straight sword ( forgot its name ) while samurai mostly used katanas. So, essentially katanas were samurai swords.
