It happened to me in both of the Bethesda - Fallout games. In Fallout 3 I loved the game but after a while I stopped playing. That while grew to about a month and then when I finally forced myself to play (I kept telling myself that it's fun and you get to explore) I got re-addicted.
In Fallout: New Vegas, happening as we speak, actually. I played OWB, tested out one of the endings and then loaded a save so I could try a different ending. I stopped playing for a while, just because. I finally decided to play, I could have ended the game within minutes but I lengthened it with exploration. I wanted to find all of the locations, before end the DLC. I did it, got the ending I wanted and went back to the Mojave (just in time for LR, if I may add). Now I'm re-exploring the Mojave a bit, taking different routes, trying to keep some interest.
But as are the symptoms of ALL my boredom with the Fallout games, I started using saves to my advantage. Instead of actually playing the game, I saved, killed everything in site, blew some stuff up, used some crazy mods and then reloaded the save so all my damage would be undone. That's usually the first symptom of my boredom.
EDIT: I guess, after a while of playing a game, when you beat everything, it get's boring.
Except, I like FO3, over FNV because FNV isn't as massive. Sure it has way more locations and stuff, but it's all laid out too closely. In FO3, you could see the Washington Monument (or is it memorial?) from the overlook at Vault 101. From Vault 101 to the Monument, was a HUGE stretch of land, seemingly impossible to trek and it really felt like that.
In FNV, from Goodsprings you can see New Vegas in the distance. But from Goodsprings to Vegas, it's just barren land with a settlement or quest here and there. It's all too repetitive. I like to 'explore' in New Vegas but I eventually find myself going in circles. I go to the furthest corner of the map and somehow find myself back in Vegas, with the same scenery that didn't seem to change.
