What games have lost the fire

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 10:00 am

Most of the games I own, the only game I'm still playing is FNV but thats just because of the DLC coming out later this month.

It happened to me in both of the Bethesda - Fallout games. In Fallout 3 I loved the game but after a while I stopped playing. That while grew to about a month and then when I finally forced myself to play (I kept telling myself that it's fun and you get to explore) I got re-addicted.

In Fallout: New Vegas, happening as we speak, actually. I played OWB, tested out one of the endings and then loaded a save so I could try a different ending. I stopped playing for a while, just because. I finally decided to play, I could have ended the game within minutes but I lengthened it with exploration. I wanted to find all of the locations, before end the DLC. I did it, got the ending I wanted and went back to the Mojave (just in time for LR, if I may add). Now I'm re-exploring the Mojave a bit, taking different routes, trying to keep some interest.

But as are the symptoms of ALL my boredom with the Fallout games, I started using saves to my advantage. Instead of actually playing the game, I saved, killed everything in site, blew some stuff up, used some crazy mods and then reloaded the save so all my damage would be undone. That's usually the first symptom of my boredom.

EDIT: I guess, after a while of playing a game, when you beat everything, it get's boring.

Except, I like FO3, over FNV because FNV isn't as massive. Sure it has way more locations and stuff, but it's all laid out too closely. In FO3, you could see the Washington Monument (or is it memorial?) from the overlook at Vault 101. From Vault 101 to the Monument, was a HUGE stretch of land, seemingly impossible to trek and it really felt like that.

In FNV, from Goodsprings you can see New Vegas in the distance. But from Goodsprings to Vegas, it's just barren land with a settlement or quest here and there. It's all too repetitive. I like to 'explore' in New Vegas but I eventually find myself going in circles. I go to the furthest corner of the map and somehow find myself back in Vegas, with the same scenery that didn't seem to change.

Every game I own currently and I can't really say I regret it. Last game I finished was The Witcher 2. Before that I played Crysis 2, Metro 2033, Gray Matter and MS Flight Simulator X. If I'm not forgetting something.

Pretty much every game I play loses it's 'fire', usually after one play through. I'm not one that often plays through games multiple times.

There are a few exceptions though.
-Morrowind - Ok, so mods help, put even after playing this game on and off for seven years, I can still explore the original world for hours and not get bored.
-Deus Ex - I've played through this five or six times now over the past seven or eight years and I still feel that there's more to see.
-Civilisation 2 - Ok, so I play IV more often now, but I still occasionally go back to 2 - it's my favourite in the series.

Oblivion for sure. Despite its many (many) flaws I've had tons of fun with it, especially after installing a whole bunch of mods. Got dozens and dozens of hours out of it, even though all the time I was complaining how it still wasn't as good as Morrowind :P. But I just can't play it any more, even looking at screenshots bores me to tears.

I've played WoW for many hundreds of hours and had loads of fun doing so, but it lost its fire, so to say, a few months after TBC came out. WotLK brought me back for a while, and though I had fun it wasn't the same. I don't think I'll ever pick it up again. I'd probably still enjoy playing it every now and again, but not enough to justify the monthly fee.

I thought Morrowind had lost it too, but I installed it again a few days ago with tons of mods, and I'm loving it. I'm going for my own mushroom tower again (I've played through House Telvanni so many times...) but now it'll be bigger and better than ever!

i'm tired of pretty much everything right now. i reinstalled The Witcher 2 and played for like ten minutes before i remembered i didn't feel like going through the tutorial prologue again and wound up uninstalling, and i'm trying on and off to play the new Deus Ex but it's lost its glow for me, even though i still like it. i'd like to get back into STALKER but the idea of having to go back and redo all my mods isn't particularly appealing.

i've been trying out some fan missions for Thief 2 and the Dark Mod for Doom 3 (which has the potential to be GREAT once Tech 4 goes opensource), but none of them hold my attention for long - i find too many of the fan missions weird and inconsistent and clunky, even stuff that gets almost universal acclaim like A Night in Rocksbourg.

i'm playing through both System Shock games right now (the latter having gone from a game i'd known about for a while but never bothered playing to probably one of my favorite games ever) though and they're FANTASTIC. i'm trying to use that enjoyment as a springboard to get back into Bioshock and beat that so i can be properly excited for Bioshock Infinite. hopefully it'll work.
