What Language Would You Learn Just for Fun?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:12 pm

We did own them too at one point. I dont see an issue with ignoring the facts. And becuase of that they speak mostly English (or is Canada more French ?) Just assuming the same for Sweden/Norway/Finland and expect most speak Swedish.

We hate it when people think that most of the Finns are speaking Swedish. Only about 200,000 people here actually speak Swedish andd the rest (about 5 million) speak Finnish. We Finns hate Swedes for one or more reasons y'know. The Norwegian have their own language, but it's very similiar to Swedish and Danish.
Just giving a little information on that. I'm not here to start a language war.

I'm not very good at Spanish or Italian, so I'd like to learn more of them. Russian is also pretty interesting. Hopefully they'll replace Swedish at some point, I've never liked studying it...

Sounds like I going to have an interesting time trying to learn the basics!

^_^ Yeah you are going to have some problems but if you want to be a smart ass you have to learn the new letters such as: ? ? ?

:grad: ? is an A&E pronounced twice as fast as you would normally pronounce a vocal (this is the same rule with the other letters)

:grad: ? is an O&E

:grad: ? is a double A = AA

if you learn to pronounce these right you will be in front of the rest of the class for atleast three month
What got me interested in trying it was a movie I recently rented - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terribly_Happy. Despite being a very dark film it sparked my interest in Denmark again.

Where did you find that movie

French (already know quite a bit)
German

.. and Mandarin (Chinese dialect), since that's a second language my wife speaks.
Ooh, did you wind up marrying Surajo or did you find someone else?

My answer would have to be Russian, German, Hebrew, Navajo, and yeah. I also would like to learn Welsh and expand my Spanish vocabulary since I'm Welsh and Honduran and want to be cheesy.

Sweden don't own Norway and Finland. Whilst to most there isn't much difference culture wise between Sweden and Norway (although it's still noticeable), there's a definite difference between them and Finland.

Shhh! Don't listen to this man, we own Norway. :shifty:

Russian sounds badass so that, I wouldnt mind visiting parts of scandinavia when im older so probablly Swedish because (dont crucify me if wrong) Sweden own Norway and Finland at one point ? I sssume they speak Swedish aswell as native languages so just seems more practical. Also Welsh, not practial at all. But I feel I need to because I am Welsh.

I could say this. Norwegians and Swedes understand eachother very well, and I know a decent amount of Finish people are taught Swedish in school. A Swede or Norweigan would never understand Finish though.
And the Danish are just all around odd.

I wish we went back to Latin words Sol > Sun, Luna > Moon and Terra > Earth.

Also considering Europe already has one currency we should have one language, should be latin, screw english.

Europe has many currencies.

I dabbled in Hebrew for a season, not seriously though, because I came across an http://www.flickr.com/photos/25411109@N05/2689141613/in/photostream/ to be used in http://www.flickr.com/photos/25411109@N05/2513981902/in/photostream/ I didn't get very far because there are other things to do, but I could always copy an existing text for FUN.

Where did you find that movie

At Blockbuster (US movie rental store). There was just one sitting on the shelf looking lonely so I thought someone should rent it. ;) Had no idea it was Danish with English subtitles. I liked Jakob Cedergren (played the cop) - he's pretty cool. Oh, thanks for the pronunciation help!

There are two. Japanese, it is this nerd's dream to one day visit. And for practical reasons, Spanish. It's a plus on many job searches.

Latin, which I currently am trying to.

As or this Norway/Finland/Sweden thing...

Norway was at a point under swedish rule and danish rule. As for Norway and Finland, there's almost no relation in language, other than that norwgian and swedish is similiar and that swedish is also spoken in Finland. But that's about it. @Ratslayer: We do not speak swedish or a different form of it in Norway.

Ok, just thought you would have if Sweden rulled your country, like how everyone in the UK speaks english, and lots of places the UK ruled do too.

Is Norwegian similar ?

Is Norwegian similar ?

The British Empire was much more recent.

As I understand it, most of the Nordic langauges are similar enough that they are more or less mutually understandable (if they speak loudly and slowly enough :P), but are far from the same. Finnish is more closely related to Hungarian than Danish.

(or is Canada more French ?)

Far, far more English speakers than French speakers. With few exceptions, you'll only find French speakers in one province.

I tried learning Highland Gaelic just for jokes a while back -- my family spoke it before coming to Canada; my grandmother was the last to speak it -- and while I didn't have all that much trouble picking it up, I came to realize that it was pretty pointless to learn. Nobody around here speaks it, even online (forums, etc) there is very little opportunity to use what I would learn, so I'd just end up forgetting it all in short order anyhow.
