What I love about this forum

Post » Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:20 am

I'm studying game programming, and I find it cool how this forum is like its own group of game designers. People come on here and discuss game aspects, what could be better, what could be worse, how to fix broken aspects of gameplay. It's pretty awesome.

It would be even better if there wasn't so much negativity.
There are actually courses for game programming now? You in a university or college? Or self-taught?
EDIT: I'm sort of the same, though I study the much more generic Software Engineering ;)

Me too =] except I'm not doing programming, doing more artistic focused stuff like character/level/environment creation and design. I salute you as I don't know if I could stand to program all day lol.

Yeah there are classes, at my college they have a pretty big game design program.
As interesting as it sounds I chose not to do it because thats what everyone seems to be doing, and if I made a game I would want to do it my way not be forced to make some abomination for money (not acusing Beth of this, but most studios are that way)

I do get into some interesting conversations sometimes, but more often than not its either "No, Morrowind did it best," "No, Oblivion was perfect," "All I want is Skyrim, I don't care if its broken or not," or just spam.

Edit: Hooraay for Software Engineering!

Embrace the negativity, just so long as it's constructive. The worst feedback BGS can get is mindless praise. I think the high review scores and millions of whatever currency you fancy each of their games makes is worship enough.

In my experience, what someone labels as "Negativity" is simply a truth that the labeller is unwilling or unable to presently accept.

Blimey, I wouldn't have said so. You should have seen the reactions to my "give Skyrim a definitive ending" and "Oblivion's fast travel svcks" threads. Even though I was composed and polite throughout I received my worst abuse ever on gaming forums because I was proposing changes to the precious past instalments.

CD is lovely though.

In my experience, one person's "truth" on the internetz is entirely subjective. Opinions, on the other hand, get tossed around like nobodies business and some folks are right defensive about their positions. In terms of debating Skyrim - until people have really played it, a lot of what is being discussed - as opinion or "truth", is pretty much speculative. There are some solid grounds for discussion, based on what has been said or shown publically, but it sure is interesting to see how different people interpret even the simplest statements.

Some topics are just very contentious, it seems. We kind of hate seeing the fast travel topic come up in Oblivion - it seems to bring out the worst in members who normally know better. As for giving Skyrim a definitive ending - if you were proposing that Bethesda actually just "end" and elder scrolls game, upon, say, the completion of the main quest, I am not surprised people came down on you like a ton of bricks. But, that aside - we always allow and will leave along critical topics or debates on Beth games or other games, as long as people don't take the conversation to hurling personal insults, or, as has happened in the past, trying to introduce real world politics and such.

Oh I knew what I was getting into. It was just the uncalled for rudeness and out of hand dismissal of my carefully crafted argument that got to me, and frankly it was the worst I've ever seen a reasonable post subjected to.

No doubt I'll dig it up again once Skyrim comes out and the verdict on whether its ending is lame or not is in and the whole beautiful process can start again.

According to Todd's logic, you're off to a good start. "You'll have to do a lot on your own..."

Yes, Community Discussion is the best of the Bethesda forums areas IMO. Its like the same couple dozen members who regularly post so its a more tight-knit forum and I like it that way :) I joined these forums for the Oblivion and Fallout 3 discussions and now I cant remember the last time I've visited those areas. I've stayed in the CD for quite some time, but I have accounts on a few other website's forums and Bethesda is probably the most civilized...generally anyway :P
