what is the "capatial" of skyrim, as in huge city?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 2:39 pm

I just picked up skyrim the other day for the pc, and I've only been around maybe 10% of the map. Yet just from what I have seen, it does not seem that the cities/towns will be too big. Is there one big bustling city that has more than just a castle and 10-15 buildings? Just asking because I'm playing a rogue and kinda am running out of....victims....err...people that I will long term "borrow" from so to speak. I guess the best example I can give would be the first city that you went to in morrowind. Not the one that you got dropped off at as a prisoner, but the next one that you went to (had the river dividing it). Just wondering is all. Also, now that I think about it, it seems to be a favorite way for bethesda to start their games, you being a prisoner....eh...sorry random thought,

Solitude in the north is the largest and richest.

Compared to previous games, they aren't big at all though.

Even Oblivion had bigger cities then Skyrim.

That said I think the overall map in Skyrim is bigger than that of Oblivion.

The cities in skyrim are patetics, the capital doesn t even have 100 souls counting rats and rockroaches as denizens. Its as bad as Oblivion, and even worse than Morrowind.

Solitude is the new capital and Windhelm is the old capital.

They are definitely more detailed and varied than Oblivion.

After playing both games extensively, the cities in Oblivion don't seem that much bigger than Skyrims cities. Even the Imperial city was small. Skyrim's cities are much more detailed and lively.

I think it's more of a design choice than a fault. We're talking about a northern province here, not the heart of the empire. I'm sure even the largest the towns of Gaul couldn't match up to Rome.

It is the same size, it just feels bigger because of the mountains and the fact you have to walk around them.

i think it does, seeing as Whiterun alone has over 70 NPCS

FYI I think Vivec was the "main" city in Morrowind :)

But yeah, I'm so disappointed by the small cities in Skyrim. They feel especially smaller by the low amount of NPC's strolling around. Hope that there's a big metropolis type area in future DLC.

Solitude is like the captital city, Whiterun is where most of the trade happens.

It probably was a design choice. As far as I'm concerned, though, it was a bad one. They're scaled down way too much. They don't feel like cities at all. And it has nothing to do with what was in Oblivion. They're just tiny.

I think it's due to limits on the engine. Trying to hold that many npc's in one load zone would drive it bonkers.

But yeah, I liked Morrowind and how the cities actually felt like cities. Oblivion and Skyrim feel empty by comparison.

Nothing like Imperial city in this game, but whiterun, markarth and solitude would be the largest. The others feel smaller to me.

Here comes a joke...what do you call a place in Skyrim with more than three houses? - A city!

I think everyone is a bit spoiled by other sandbox games (not other bethesda games). I'm pretty sure the city of GTA IV, for example, is at least as big as Skyrim's whole map.

Some of these capitals could be bigger though... but at the same time, they'd probably have to do something to tone down the npc pvssyr. Just one pub with 8 people can have them overlapping comments to you. Or if you're trying to listen in on a conversation from a distance and some NPC has to pvssyr about in front of you. "Olfrid, patron of the clan Battleborn!" Yeah, ok dude.. I heard ya the last 500 times.
