What is the point in having multiple races when your choice

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:58 pm

I mean apart from starting stats and bonuses racial choice means nothing, I mean the racist Nord will still call your Dark Elf a brother in arms and the Thalmor will still recognise your High Elf as scum, the Dark Elf will hold no grudge against your Argonian while you Khajiit will be allowed free roam of the cities while the rest of your race wait outside in the cold, if racial choice means nothing then why offer a choice at all?

Being able to choose which race you play is just another superflous feature that needs to be axed from future games, am I right guys?

The point? I don't know. I like role playing different races for story/conceptual reasons.

edit: In my head, I mean.

While it'd be nice if everything pertaining to roles was coded in game, I don't need it.

You still get racial powers, they still look different, and you get different voices depending on your race.

If that ever comes in to question, I will give up completely on Elder Scrolls games.
When the mods make it possible, I will be putting a much larger weight on racial bonuses and limitations. Bethesda has sadly streamlined Skyrim for accessibility, which is commendable, but by no means the most fun.

The point is they look different. And i like it this way, i don't have to go " damn i want to play an archer, but khajits have 0 skill in archery!"

So, you would prefer it if your Khajiit wasn't allowed into any of the cities? Or if the Stormcloaks tried to kill your Imperial on sight? That would make performing half the quests impossible.

Sure, some mention of your race would be nice, I suppose, but too much literal connection would be a problem.

What the others said. Also, if you know a bit of the lore in TES, they have quite different cultural backgrounds. Since I roleplay my characters, this gives some nice input on what to do/what not. And beast races are just plain awesome :tes: . Knowing that I am a lizard really changes my playstyle. Same for cats.

Edit: What would be nice though, is a bit more reaction from the NPCs. Sure, they tell my to keep my hands out of their pocket as a khajiit, but a bit of a wider array of commentary as well as maybe some reaction to the race would be nice. For example, as an Argonian I might get higher prices if I want to buy stuff from a Dunmer merchant (it does not has to be every Dunmer merchant, but some are definitely no fans of the people from Blackmarsh).

It would've been cool, but it's just too much and too complicated. Besides, don't forget you're the Dovahkiin so people might take that in mind. Even though most people don't recognize that either, maybe they're just shy -.-

Yeah, that stuff can get out of hand, where sometimes.. a player may subconsciously tell themselves not to roll a character, just because of some small bonus. They should be thinking instead of just character appeal.. not mechanics. "Is a khajit archer badass....? Of course, it is."

Axed from future games? No I don't think you're right. Races are crucial in any TES game.

For example, I loved DAO and I didn't buy Dragon Age 2 when I heard I wouldn't be able to chose a race. As simple as that.

It's called "roleplay". You know, the first two letters in "RPG" ;)

Agreed. I play Khajiit because they are Cat like persons, not because they have a punching bonus because of their claws or because of the night eye. It is a good way how they did the races, every has their own ability but WITHOUT making Nord and Orc PURE Babarian, Imperial and Bretons PURE Knights or all the Elves PURE Mages. I think it is pretty well balanced. And i also wouldn't like if every Guard attacks me just becaus i am one special race. The NPC already taunt other races and i think it is good this way.

I always thought the race you choose should matter for your skills. If you took a Breton your primary skill would be Conjuration, why not let Conjuration level up to 125 or something. Have a perk or ability that you can only get when you reach 125. Cats are supposed to be quick and agile, why not let agili.... err nm.

As for how people interact with you... It would be great but I am guessing it would take a lot of work to change everything for each race.

You still get some leeway as a human there. You might not like it still, but I'd say give it a shot at least. It's not unprecedented really. Just think of it as one of those premade RPG pen and paper campaigns where you're limited for the sake of the story.

Of course, the perfect way is how Vampire: Bloodlines handled it, but good luck to implement such a system on a complex (meaning huge and open) game like Skyrim :).

It's cheap enough now in Amazon, but the reviews are horrible anyways, and I think I still wouldn't buy it. :)

Pen & Paper campaigns, I miss those!

I reckon races could be better in Skyrim - maybe modders are already thinking about this - but not to be able to play them is not a choice in any TES game.

I diddnt say that, I said that if you play a khajiit and you get allowed in the cities while the rest of your smelly race has to stay outside it doesnt make much sense however if you cant play a khajiit then the problem doesnt come up that you cant enter a city for being a Khajiit, cut the problem at its source and remove racial choice altogether and you will always be correctly identified and treated accordingly to your race which is the only race you can play, human. Please read my posts more carefully in the future to avoid these embarrasing misunderstandings champ.
