What would playing Oblivion after Skyrim feel like?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 11:26 am

I prefer Oblivion but it's all down to personal preference obviously. Unfortunately I never got the chance to play Morrowind so I can't comment on that.

I can`t play Oblivion without at least 50 mods, then it`s better than Skyrim default.

However, FO3 and Skyrim didn`t need half as many mods to get them good.

Bethesda made some big mistakes with Oblivion and you can see how they corrected this in both FO3 and Skyrim.

Except for the horses in Skyrim which they made worse and the forced 3rd person views- I don`t get it.

This is my first exposure to Elder Scrolls. I really enjoy these story lines, and wonder what it would be like to run thru TES IV now. Just how far advanced is the gameplay in Skyrim over that in Oblivion? What would I most notice about the mechanics of the game? Do you think that Skyrim is so superior to Oblivion in content that I'd be really wasting my time? What would make me say, "This was a royal waste of time and money?"

I suggest you post this kind of thing in the Oblivion General Discussion forum, if you want the perspective of people who have played Oblivion a lot. Then you can combine it with the reactions of people who have done as much with Skyrim.

For myself, I wouldn't say that Skyrim advances gameplay over Oblivion, anymore than Oblivion does over Morrowind, etc. The changes to each title weren't based on advancements, but on perceptions of increasing market size and contouring features already present to match player profiles. There's no "superiority" to argue, just different experiences. I will say that, given the sheer wealth of mods out for Oblivion (over 25000) by this time, it does offer the ability to tailor one's playing far more than Skyrim does. This will certainly change as time goes on and Skyrim becomes heavily modded, but for now, if you want, say, an additional 100+ hours of involved questing, or the most deeply realized companions around, Oblivion's got these.

Vanilla Oblivion is an absolute joke of a game, compared to both Morrowind and Skyrim. It was without a doubt the ugly duckling of TES games.

Oblivion is the only TES game that I cannot play without mods. Archery is completely broken in that game, so is the horrid level scaling. It's literally so bad you cannot enjoy it without mods.

The character models/faces are also just HIDEOUS. Every single race has the same voice actor and all races look identical. You cannot tell races apart like in MW and Skyrim.

My advice? Do not waste your time.

It's going to feel like a giant step backwards.

Oblivion is a great game. But like every other oldie but goodie, it had its time and now its got to step aside and make room for the next generation.

I'm sure my statements will draw ire from the people who don't want evolution, who just want everything to remain the same (or they want reboots of all the old [censored]). And I don't care about them.

In my opinion, if you like Skyrim you might also like Oblivion. The game play is very similar.

But it is a matter of opinion of course.

Some aspects you might like more or less. There are things like needing to repair armor - I think that is good because it's more realistic, but some might think it's tedious. Also you can make your own spells, And many other relatively minor game play differences.

Skyrim of course has better graphics, but with TES IV is still very beautiful. Particularly if you can use mods like Quarl's retexturing mods. The NPCs will still look a little "cartoonish" compared with later games.

If you can use the OOO and MMM mods the experience will be vastly improved. Because level scaling is worse than in Skyrim, and OOO fixes that, as well as adds a lot of gameplay improvement. MMM will add a lot of interesting monsters and creature AI changes that help the game.

Again much of this is a matter of opinion.

I might get rid of Skyrim, I might get rid of Oblivion...

I`ll NEVER get rid of Morrowind and the expansions.

Thanks strange looking chinese guy

BTW she's a snow white (hair too) Nord, so no... the only dark thing about her is on the inside, hence the dark demon eyes.

Driving a 94 Integra versus a sleek 4 cylinder car now with a bunch of mods and a GPS in it. It looks pretty, but functionally pretty much the same wimpy car.

If anything Skyrim's characters look very similar. Half the time I can't decide whether they're an Imperial or a Redguard.

Oblivion's faces and character models are ugly, but the races look completely different from each other.

Oblivion can add depth and perspective to your Skyrim experience. It is remains a competitive title which is astonishing given the fact that it is 6 yrs old. It still blows many contemporary (non-tes) rpg's away in terms of the depth and game play experience. The quest lines in Oblivion are competitive with Skyrim, and arguably, more complex in some instances. You can debate mechanics all day, but bottom line, I think anyone who is a serious TES fan should experience it. You certainly would be hard pressed to find a better value for the price.

Oblivion is second only to Skyrim as my favorite game of all time and I've been thinking about this because of the history and lore. To think that so much of Tamriel has changed in the past 200 years and the city I walked every day no longer exists just makes me sad. I think I'll feel good to play it again as a way of reminiscing though. I have an unfinished game and some DLC I've never done. I tend to prefer the newer tech but I think it'll be ok because I love it that much. Give it a try OP...prices are way low on older games and it'll help you with the lore. :)

I also think Oblivion is one of the all time great games, but to be really enjoyed must be played on PC and modded. Vanilla is good, but with the DLC and some choice mods to expand the game experience there is nothing to surpass it outside of an MMO. I honestly never thought we would ever see a game with as much diverse and unique content as Oblivion has, as almost every other single player RPG up to that point (bar morrowind*) had no where near as much content or as richly decorated a world.

With the huge sales of Skyrim (on top of those earned by Oblivion), its clear that other SP games are just not as fulfilling to the average gamer. The depth of choices available and the amount of content puts the competition to shame, and gives clear indications of what gamers really want; A good long-term gameplay experience.

Most of the caves in Oblivion are the same and the melee combat isn't as good. What is better though are the spells, way more interesting and cool spells. However, I wouldn't recommend polishing off this old turd, I just wish Skyrim had Oblivions' spells.

For me, TES was always about the exploration, guild quests and "being" in the game world. Revisiting Oblivion or Morrowind is like taking a stroll in an old neighborhood or holiday spot. I keep them both installed with desktop shortcuts for that reason.

Depending on your point of view, some gameplay elements and stats removed from Oblivion is either streamlining or dumbing down. There are compelling arguments for either but I can't think of one feature in Morrowind/Oblivion that was not done better in Skyrim. Skyrim improves on TES franchise in every conceivable way, IMO.

except for some of the questslines being better in oblivion and attributes and spellmaking it would be worse, especially without mods in which case it would just be downright awful.
