What would you do his fists (unarmed) had a degrade meter?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:13 am

Adding this in seems a little ridiculous haha. I've been practicing MMA for four years now and punching a heavy back without gloves still hurts like hell and causes pretty bad cuts on my knuckles. Can't even imagine punching a solid metal robot with enough force to damage it. It would have to be set up so hitting anything besides an unarmored human would cause severe damage...

The weapon degradation system is a throwback to, I believe, the old 8-bit era when developers thought it was "cool" and "realistic" to force people to consume rations and repair their crap all the time or it'd be junk.
I can't help but find this feature to be one of the WORST features ever incorporated in a game. It doesn't add a level of strategy, or fun to the game. It, in fact, distracts from both. I cannot tell you how many times I've nearly just turned off Fallout 3, Morrowind and even Oblivion because I'm realizing my half-way decent weapon is now doing 1/2 the damage it used to because I forgot to waste a ton on inventory weight on items to repair it. If they ever remove anything from this game, I'd love it to be that.
Fallout 1 and 2 never forced you to repair your weapons and they where better for it. They focused the challenge on limiting the power creep, forcing you to conserve ammo early on and rewarding you for doing so. I really hope that is fixed in New Vegas.

In fallout 1 and 2 weapons could break (critical miss) I wouldn't want for that feature to be gone, even if it is annoying :P It should just be improved

But call it something else than degradation. And Endurance should play a role in that. amirite?

EDIT: typo

Yes, call it the Knuckle Sore-O-Meter.

If this is implemented, Endurance or Fatigue should have an impact with this.

OH GOD WHAT HAS THE OP DONE?!?!

The "realism first!" people really are scaring me. It's a good thing(for me and maybe more casual players anyways) this game is being made by the developers and not the fanbase, no offense. :flamed:

Well, that's why we have hardcoe mode. hardcoe mode should turn on all the hardcoe realism features that casual players hate. Every game should have a hardcoe mode that's truly hardcoe.

Pair of Fists can be used to repair your own. They look like http://0.tqn.com/d/martialarts/1/0/J/fist4.jpg, except 2 of them. And without the arm. Can be found in Nuka-Cola machines. I hope Obsidian doesn`t read this thread and get funny ideas about decapitated fists...

I support getting a permanent status effect called "arthritis" if you degrade your unarmed fists to much. :tops:

I think that having your upper limbs degrade faster would make sense, as long as it is tiedto your skill level.

The tradeoff would have to be unarmed gets higher crits or, possibly, a close quarter fighting mode that can offset putting your body in front of the bullets. Continuous fist attacks could stop them from shooting, maybe? Thoughts?

I'd still rather deal with that then the unrealistic weapon degradation. All you needed to do to prevent that was get your weapon skill over 100 and have a luck of 4+ and there's a solid chance you'd never deal with that in a play through (barring you had jinxed). Also, just never shoot at anything below 35%.

As long as Endurance plays as part in this, as well as your Sleep meter in hardcoe.

While we're at it, why not add in a potential tripping hazard because of all the rubble in the wasteland when in combat! Or a chance for the opponent to actually break your weapon beyond repair so it cannot be used for anything! Maybe even heavy items that you cannot drop, ever.
Do these sound fun? No? Good, neither does the unrealistically high repair-rate in these games.

Has anyone even actually SAID anything to you? >.> It's not unrealistic. Guns need maintainence to work. The dev's though that that would be the best way, and it is, actually. Would you rather have to do a minigame where you clean your gun barrel and whatnot? People like you would complain anyways. Deal with it or stop complaining. Certainly, being able to repair a pair of brass knuckles with another IS unrealistic and others like that BUT- other than those few (MAYBE five or six) examples, it's pretty decent.

This is a public forum. If you do not want random people interjecting in a conversation then take it private. Because it is public I am allowed to voice my opinion just as much as you are.
And yes I would complain about that waste of time, too. Because it does not ADD anything FUN to the game. It'd just be one more annoying delay between me and progressing the story line or killing super mutants (maybe even both).
You do, also, realize that unless you physically DAMAGE a weapon it's pretty hard to break it? I have never seen a gun that needed to replace the barrel, stock, and trigger mechanism of an assault rifle every mission (I mean why else is it requiring the use of an ENTIRE weapon to fix it a few percent?). Hell, they didn't even need to do that with muskets!
What I am saying is that this idiotic, poorly thought out, system to hinder monetary gain (or to limit carry space) does not need to happen.
Oh, and the only gun to ever need as much maintenance as these guns require was the Chauchat. Which, if we're using then it needs to be firing the 8mm round, not the 5.56.

They couldn't do that with muskets. They had no interchangable parts.

I know it's public, and you do have a right to post. Though honestly, I haven't seen you make a single actual contribution to this other than shallow sarcasm and complaints. So it's pretty damn annoyng... >.>
And I know that. Did you skip half of what I said? You seem like the type that would hex edit it so nothing would ever degrade and still go on forums and complain about it... The point of it is to make some sort of strategy to the game or something, I guess. It WAS poorly thought out, but I see where the dev's are coming from...

Well, when people come up with crack-headed ideas about causing your hands to become less effective, I'm not gonna be all sunshine and rainbows on it.
If I where to hex edit it to keep everything at 100%, I'd be fine with it. I'd just continue to edit every game they made that involved that moronic system and enjoy the game for the storyline, combat, and the tactics involved while not having to deal with such annoying distractions and cash sinks. I would, also, make it as public as possible that it can be done and show people how.
If they mentioned in the game about coming up with a customizable system where you can mod different guns with receivers, loading mechanisms, and whatnot (provided they all actually fit) to make different guns then I'd be all over it like a hobo on a ham & cheese sandwich. That would interest me. Hell, I'd play the game JUST for that reason.

yeah that would pretty much kill unarmed melee especially since fists don't do that much damage and how would you repair them? but it obviously won't happen since it's such a bad idea so no worries.

You repair them with other hands in the Wasteland, of course. That's how I fix mine.
