What is your character's backstory?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 12:44 am

I have been reading about some interesting characters everyone is making and I'd like to know, what is YOUR character's backstory? Come on guys, we all have them. Those little seeds tucked in the back of our brain as we play. So, tell us your PC's backstory! Consider this thread the predlude to the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1164205-upside-down-game-endings/!

Mine has been heavily edited to be acceptable for this board but I tried to keep the original meaning of the story intact.

Mercy Me

You're awake. How about that. Whoa, easy there. Easy. You been out cold a couple of days now. Why don't you just relax a second? Get your bearings. Let's see what the damage is. How about your name? Can you tell me your name?

“My name? I…I…I don’t know. Don’t you know?” The pretty blonde looked at the concerned doctor with a child like stare, large blue eyes, unblinking with the most blank look on her face the good doctor had ever seen in a patient.

“Yes, my name is Doc Mitchell. Do you remember what people used to call you? Do you remember anything about your past?”

“My past?” Still staring but finally blinking a few times to bring saline tears to wash her dry eyes, a tiny drop fell from her long eye lashes onto her cheek.

The doctor watched it trickle down into the soft curve of her nose and reached out with the back of his hand and wiped the tear away. “That’s ok dear, you don’t have to tell me now. Maybe you’ll think of it in a little while, take your time, you can stay here with me as long as you want. You’ve been out now for a few days so I don’t mind keeping an eye on you a little while longer to make sure you are going to be safe outside in the waste.

“Waste? The girl had a terrified look in her eyes, " Where am I?”

“Right now you’re in Goodsprings...Goodsprings, Nevada. We’re just a watering hole here but not too far from the big city of New Vegas. The way you were dressed we all figured you to be a courier or caravan merchant but you had no goods on ya.”

“Courier? Caravan?”

Don’t worry about it now little lady. I hope you don't mind, but I had to go rooting around there in your noggin to pull all the bits of lead out. I take pride in my needlework, but you'd better tell me if I left anything out of place. Look in this mirror and tell me if you recognize your face, how'd I do?” The gentle man held the large hand mirror out to his patient sitting up in the hospital bed.

The girl took the mirror and stared into it, not recognizing the face that stared back at her. “I don’t know who I am, doc, I’m sorry.”

“Now, now missy, there’s nothing to be sorry about. Just relax, it will come to you when it comes, until then, no sense keeping you in bed anymore. Let's see if we can get you on your feet.” Doc Mitchell held his patient’s back and gently pulled her long slender legs up off the bed so they hung down the side. He supported her back until she was fully standing. She had been wrapped in a sheet and he quickly made sure she was covered completely with it so she would not catch cold and to make sure she was decent.

"Good. Why don't you walk down to the end of the room? Over by that vigor tester machine there. Take it slow now. It ain't a race. Go ahead and give the vigor tester a try. We'll learn right quick if you got back all your faculties.”

Taking a deep breath, the slender nymph slowly put one foot in front of the other and followed her doctor to an unusual looking machine by the wall. It had a curious handle that tilted one way or the other to test certain aspects of a patient. It tested her strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. Taking the tests were fun to her but she didn’t know if she had the right answers. She looked to the handsome elderly man with questioning eyes.

The doctor quietly reviewed the results then looked at her. “Look at that. Maybe them bullets done your brain some good. Sorry, little lady. I fixed up your head as best I knew how. Guess I missed a spot. Well, we know your vitals are good. But that don't mean them bullets didn't leave you nuttier than a Bighorner dropping. What do you say you take a seat on my couch and we go through a couple questions? See if your dogs are still barking.”

“Doctor, I’m very tired. I can’t do anymore. I need to lay down.”

“Of course little lady, come on over there and lay down on my bed. It’s got the best mattress in the house, I’ll get a blanket for you.” He talked kindly to her as he lead her down a hallway to his bedroom.

It was a pleasant room and didn’t smell of antiseptic and iodine. She cuddled into a ball on his big double bed and hugged his pillow.

“Are you hungry? Can I fix you some vittles?”

“No, no thank you. I’m just very confused. Can you lay down with me? Please?”

The doctor hesitated for a moment not wanting to break the sanctity of the doctor patient relationship but there was something so sad, so lonely about this pretty girl he found himself removing his shoes and laying down next to her.

“Can you please hold me? Hold me tight doc and don’t let me go, I’m so afraid. Who shot me in the head? Why would someone do that? I don’t know where to go or how to get there...please...hold me tight.”

“Little lady, it’s not the practice of a doctor to get into a bed with his patient. I have been tending to you for several days now, praying I could save you but not to sleep with you.”

“Then you’re not my doctor anymore, you’re just a man and I’m just a girl who is alone and afraid and I need you now, I just need your strength, please, hold me in your arms.”

He wrapped his arms around her and the warmth of her body made him realize how long it had been since he slept with a woman.

The waif in his arms sensed his dilemma and she turned her head around to him and she kissed his lips, so tenderly and lovingly, he could not refuse. “Doc, please, I want to be with you.”

And in the darkness of his bedroom, amidst sounds of the elderly man and the young courier, Doc Mitchell called out her name...“Mercy Me.”

 That would be me! But that was a different couruier, this one is going to have a different upside down ending. ;) I had hoped to get more RPGers to join me here. Mercy Me has the intelligence of 1 and it's been a riot playing with her! I hope that reflects in her game ending. :fallout:

Back in the old days, there was an android named Courier 6 (40B13P), he was a soldier in the Vietnam War, weilding the M16A2 and the M1911.45. He survived to see the bombs fall and saw a town called Nuketown. Lucky enough the android found a Fallout Shelter. Strangely enough, the town's population is all manniquins. But before the bombs fell, he was in the shelter, with mannequins. Then after 4 months, he went out of the shelter, immune to the radiation but still had a suit on. He survived 200 years and finally took the job of a Courier. One day he was attacked and shot in the head. The bullet messed up his internals. He was found by Victor a securtron of the strange Mr. House. He was handed to Doc Fitchell (yes, Fitchell) to patch up, luckily Doc Fitchell was good with robots and patched the android up and freshened all of the dust and erosion after 300 years (lucky android). The android still liked the old M16A2 he kept with him for a long time and his old M1911.45 (needed Vietnam War Pack from pre-order). He also kept his old Vietnam War Vest (DT of 15). He had 10 pre war money stacks and 4 Frag Grenades with him. (also needed Vietnam War Pack from pre-order). Later he did some shooting and stuff.
He remembered from his leaders at the Vietnam War, "Stay focused! Stay alive!"

@ ice625
I like it, kind of like Universal Soldier meets Harkness. Did you ever find that shelter heading into DC where there was a manniquin and it was full of plungers? Plungers were all over that room, as well as lots of chems, and a big head from a statue, usually a ghoul or two is in there also but I'll never forget when I stumbled on that room in FO3, your story made me think of hiding out in that shelter. :bolt:

YES! That room was weird. I went in and was like...w....t.....f....especially since I must've missed it at least a few times.

Hm...Sylar I guess

Sylar

The man awoke with a start, half leaping to his feet as his legs gave way beneath him. He hit the floor hard, the pain shocked him.
"Woah there kid, don't go throwing yourself around! Here take this"
The man presented a small vial of liquid. Wary but in too much pain to argue the man took it and downed it.
"There, should help with the pain, you know you've been out for a couple of days now, should take it more slowly." The doctor turned and wandered off to get some clothes, food and water for the man. "Say now, what's your name friend?"
"Sylar...it's...it's Sylar...where am I? Why am I so weak...?"
"My name's Mitchell son, Doc Mitchell. You were shot in the head. Twice. You're damn lucky to be alive, give your body time, you'll get all your faculties back shortly."

Sylar slowly sat, his body felt numb, the medicine dulled his mind but it stopped the throbbing pain too. He pushed himself to his feet, rising carefully, afraid of his legs buckling, his jaw still ached from falling off the bed.
"There now" said the doctor, "give this here vigour tester a go, should show us how you're coping."
Smiling the man strode to the machine, every step bringing his strength back to form, he firmly clasped the handle and completed the various tests, scoring highly across the board.

"Heh, well, guess that explains how you're still alive, come on over here and sit down, got some questions I should run by you, check all your dogs are still barking ya hear?"

Calmly he sat, the clothes were a little tight but they did the job, they covered his scars.
After asking innumerate questions, the doctor seemed satisfied with the man's mental health. He asked him to remain a while but the man smiled bitterly and clipped the bag around his waist, wincing as the movement jogged his head.
"I'd love to stay and I certainly owe you a due good doctor, but I have a man to hunt down and a greater debt to pay. I promised an old friend I'd deliver that package, ain't no man gonna stop me."

As he walked into the village to gather supplies before trekking out the worry on his face became clear though, he remembered facing armies down, surviving impossible odds...how was it possible he'd been nearly killed by a chump and his hired apes...? He pushed it to the back of his mind, he would deal with the fear when he had time, now he had to push on. He had to finish the job, he'd never failed before.

Originally intended to be a cannibalistic unarmed guy (hence the name) he quickly became something else entirely. His conflicted nature sticks with him throughout, he tries to be the diehard merc but he can't, he cares for the future of the land. His old friend is actually another character I made, Phoenix. In my stories Sylar knew him before he went crazy and turned all wannabe God. The promise was to save the Mojave, Phoenix's original home (and where he returns, after cleansing the Capital Wasteland).
My story gets complex, but it's basically a meeting of three (well, 4, but he really is a pathetic one) powers in the Mojave, Sylar, Phoenix and Karmel. All arrived in different ways, for different reasons with different goals. Sylar wants to free the land, believing in the power of individuals and progress. Phoenix wants to purify it, aiming to replace Caesar, with his own legion of worshippers. Karmel intends to kill everyone but she lacks the ability of the other two, often though she walks in once they've duked it out and succeeds in taking the fought over whatever it is.
The fourth is a dimwitted trollop who fights for the NCR and basically thinks he's the best alive. He's the comic relief of the fights and normally ends up being saved by Phoenix who decided he was clean, despite this he regards Phoenix as his mortal enemy (Phoenix never remembers who he is).
Similarly, Karmel is normally saved by Sylar but seems to think she is his mortal enemy, bound by love and torn by opposing goals. In truth Sylar doesn't like her and only saves her because he doesn't like seeing innocents die.

So yeah, that's Sylar's start and the overly complex interactions of 4 characters in one world...

Head pounding, Donovan Spin sat up.

"Wooh, pal. Slow down there"

His vision slowly began to clear. In front of him was an elderly man, sitting in his stool.

"Whats your name, son?" Donovan let his head clear for a moment.

"My name's Spin." He said to the old man, "Now what the hell am I doing here?"

"Just relax. I'm Doc Mitchell." The Old man said, "You got a pretty nasty shot to the head back there. I fixed you up right." Donovan felt around on his face. It was fine. The bullet must have hit his forhead and missed his important features.

"Well, no use keepin you in bed. Cmon now, lets see how your feeling with the vigour tester." The two went up, and walked over to the tester. Donovan grabbed the handle, and his score appeard average for almsot all of them. Untill he reached luck.

"Wow." The Doc said, whistling apprecietavally, "A perfect 10. With luck like that, I think your going to be just fine...."

My other character: Professor Oration Ener-wep:
This is the original story of Professor Mark (AKA Professor, or Professor OEW, or Professor Oration Ener-wep)
A steamy fall day, a courier was talking to an old man. Courier says: "I'm gonna quit the courier job." Old man says, "Whuuuuuuut? Speak louder." Courier yells, "I'm... gonna.... quit... the... job... of... a... courier!" Old man says, "You goin' quit sobbin' the hurrier?" Courier says, "You deaf? Hear me you f***ing donkey a**!" The courier walks away.
Next day the courier was attacked by a strange man. (Victor dug him up and blah blah blah). Doc Fitchell (yes, Fitchell agian) says, "You're awake.........how bout that." The courier rushed up from the medical cot. Fitchell says, "Whoa! Easy there! You've been out cold a couple a' days now. Why don't you just relax....and get your bearings. How bout' your name, can you tell me your name?" The courier says, "You don't need to know my name, just call me Proffessor." Fitchell says, "I'm gonna need to know your name, so-". Courier says, [Speech 10] "No, no, no, bad doctor, shush! Now, where am I?" Fitchell says, "Well, your in Goodsprings. Go to that machine over there and get tested." Courier goes to the machine and his test goes kind of well with a CHR of 9. After all that, the Doctor says, "Try goin' to Sunny Smiles". Courier says, "........bye." Courier ditches Goodsprings with a Laser Pistol and 30 Energy cells. He makes his way to New Vegas and meets Arcade Gannon. The Courier's name is.........Mark Gannon. He is Arcade's brother, yes. Mark likes Energy Weapons, Science, and Speech and has the same, short, blonde or something hair. He also wears Glasses and is very intelligent. Mark knows Arcade is his brother, but Arcade doesn't know Mark is his brother. Mark walks up to Arcade and says hello and Arcade says hey. Arcade asks for Mark's name. Mark says, "Its Mark." Arcade says, "Last name?"
Mark says, "Well, its sorta surprising....its Gannon.......I'm your brother!" *Epic music plays*

That's more of how you play the game. A backstory is what your character is all about at the time you make it, we all know the story of the game but we don't know about your character. That's what I would like to discuss on this thread. ;)

I'm not really a video game role player, but one thing that's always in the back of my mind while playing is that my Courier is not learning by experience. After Doc Mitchell's operation, he's slowly remembering his previous training and knowledge.

Most of the role playing scenarios I've seen on this thread and the others like it don't seem like they would leave the Courier a level 1 character. Heck, the little we've seen of the Courier's background suggests he shouldn't be first level.

In other Fallouts you just have to roll with the unlikely level advancement system. At least NV gives you a whopping head injury to make it a little more feasible.

Maybe if I hadn't been on hiatus from FNV then I wouldn't have missed this thread...

Anyways this is my character Akema "Ghoul Eye" in her various incarnations:

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e29/cyborgakadjmoose/Fallout%203/fallout32009-01-1823-10-41-10-edit.jpg was my first Fallout 3 character on my old crappy PC.

http://www.fallout3nexus.com/imageshare/images/10584-1268778365.jpg was an upgraded version of Akema on my current and more awesome PC.

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/imageshare/images/10584-1288818260.jpg

Money and brute force; the only things that anyone in the wasteland respects. Unfortunately for Akema as a young child she had none of these.

Being spared the worst of mutations that an individual could have been born with, she was born with a peculiar set of red eyes; eyes that closely resembled those of a ghoul. Her eyes frequently made her a target for prejudice in the small village that she lived in. Her parents had died soon after she was born, leaving her an orphan in the care of the village families. Her childhood was difficult, like most children growing up in the wasteland, but relatively uneventful.

That was, until her foster mother returned to their home one evening in a drunken rage. Convinced that Akema was a ghoul, her step-mother grabbed a knife and carved out Akema's right eye to see if it grew back. By her step-mother's drunken reasoning, if it grew back, Akema was a ghoul and did not deserve to live.

Akema never forgave her step-mother for her injury, and since then has worn a patch over her right eye. When Akema was fourteen, she ran away from her home and set out on her own; but not before putting a bullet in her step-mother's brain. Akema eventually came into contact with a group of mercenaries who wandered across the wasteland, going from settlement to settlement and offering their services. They accepted her as one of their own and trained her in their deadly skills. It was from her surrogate family of comrades that she first felt welcome in spite of her appearance, and where she gained the nickname, "Ghoul Eye."

Eight years later at the age of 22, Akema set off on her own to earn a name for herself, selling her deadly skills as a mercenary to any willing to pay.

Recently, she had accepted a commission as a courier for the Mojave Express to deliver packages safely to their intended destinations. Little did she know that the game was rigged from the start...

OMG!! What an awesome story!!! What a crappy step mom, I hope she returned and carved her eye out as well before shooting her. I'm glad you posted, and I've been looking at your screenies, remarkable gal you've got! After you finish the game you might want to hop on over to my Upside Down Endings (you more or less rewrite the actual ending to go your way.)

btw, the "headshot" is awesome! I too play many cannibals. Make sure to stop by Jas Wilkerson in Sloan, you get to use the perk there, it's a riot!

Thanks! B) Her story stemmed from not wanting my Fallout 3 character to be the stereotypical "kid from a vault." I think I've succeeded in moving away from that!

After saving the wastelands of DC Sam was glad to settle down for awhile. Of course settling down for too long wasn't his thing. He was one of those men who dished out justice with his own hand. Of course he was no loner. He had a 6 man team. A ghoul, packed in pre-war armor, a merc in enclave hellfire, a supermutant, a robot, and Eugene, his trusty minigun. Sam and his team joined the regulators and began purging the wastes of remnants of evil doers such as cannibals and raiders alike

. Of course his life wasn't all combat and slaying evil. He had a lover. Now, with Sam you must realize he was different when it came to his love interests. In short, he was a pedophile. Now, pedophilia in the wastes wasn't a big deal, it was seen as unusual, but not how people saw them in the pre-war times. He was in love with a young girl by the name of Buttercup. She lived in Big Town which was accosted by muties every once in awhile. It just so happened that this once in awhile was the death of Buttercup. Sam was crushed.

Heart broken and depressed he told his team he needed time to think. He wandered the wastes for days at a time. On one of his walks he happened upon a small community in the edge of the wastes. The Republic of Dave. There he was greeted and shown a tour of the country. The tour guide was a lovely young girl named Shawna. He wondered if he could ever love again. He stayed the night in the brahmin pen. In the middle of the night a figure stood next to him. It kissed him. Then the figure did more then just kiss him. Sam awoke in Shawna's bed with an angry Dave and hunting rifle pointing at him. He was told to leave.

For several months they would write letters and meet in secret. One day he had enough. He would have Shawna, at any cost. He packed the things he would need to make sure Shawna was only his. This meant his trusty magnum Blackhawk. He arrived mid day at the Republic of Dave. He asked to see the president. If he wasn't going to let his daughter go, then Dave would have to go, and that's just what happened. Sam shot Dave in heart. The wives ran, and Bob came in to see who shot who. His discovery lead to a gun fight. Bullets flew through the air. Bob caught a bullet in the shoulder and ran outside. Sam opened the door and fired every bullet in the revolver. One caught Shawna in the leg. He went to her side. He tried to apologize for what he had done. He couldn't believe that it was his fault that Shawna was to die. The bleeding was profuse and would not stop. She died angry at the man she loved.

Sam was shell shocked. He dropped his gun and left for home. Several day later a supermutant with a gatling laser appeared at his door. It was Fawkes, as well as the rest of his crew. They were here to slay the wicked man they once called friend. Sam was still broken from the events. Fawkes tried to offer reason, but it was no use. He killed them all. With nothing left but rags and a top hat, he once again left to roam the wastes. Only this time he happened upon a crashed space ship. He remembered that he once was in a space ship and remembered the beacon. He left this world. For a short time at least. He always wondered what it would be like to actually settle down. Fly far away from this place. Get a normal job. Maybe a courier?

My characters always have partial amnesia from being shot in the head. I pretend that when they level they are remembering skills they forgot.
Otherwise, besides my first (who was Strummer, the Lone Wanderer) they are blank slates with a vague origin in California.
Not criticizing your way of playing; I always found it odd that all the spies, veterans and world travelers RPGers create start the game at first level. Can't figure out how they survived to make it to Goodsprings. (Though, to be fair, I also don't understand how my theoretical guy was captured by Benny and a couple Khans unless he was first level)

Yeah, explaining how my character levels makes more sense in this game than FO3.

That's actually something interesting to think about. As much as I feel that Akema could have easily handled herself against the thugs, like any good story it's no fun if your character is invincible.
She got double crossed, and now that's her motivation for the rest of the game.

My latest character plays Colonel Autumns son as he searches for the courier for revenge after the death of his father. Of course I use energy weapons and the Revenent Power Armor. Bascially hes going through the Mojave and decides to ally with Mr. House because obviously he has the best chance to locating the Courier and along the way gets caught up with the other Major Factions.

One was jumped by the Khans after rushing to their aid, he saw a fight and went to help the living (and loot the dead) and was knocked out by a combination of cattle prods and bean bags (they were well equipped Khans...)
One was in the vertibird crash (the skeletons are skeletons because they burnt OKAY!) and so suffered that way.
Another was just generally incompetent, suffered from dissociative personality disorder and was...weird. She grew stronger by learning off others, beforehand the only experience she had was defending the Brahmin back home.
The last was almost killed by the first and spends the game recovering from his injuries but unable to stop for too long lest he be killed.
