When Should I Be Able To Kill A Dragon

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 10:18 pm

I'm level 10 and the game started generating random dragon encounters about two levels ago. As of right now (L10), I have to run if I see a dragon. My attacks do only a pixel's-worth of damage and at the same time dragon's easily one shot me.

Should this not be the case? Should I be able to take a dragon down at L10? I have focused mostly on magic and haven't really done any crafting of any kind.

Well, since you're focusing on magic, could you be more specific about what attacks you're using? Un-perked, low-level Destruction spells are fairly weak, but you should still be able to take out a regular dragon.

I think I got my first randomly generated one on my second character at level 5...and yes, low level characters have a hard time, regardless of type of character.

I have put one point into novice destruction, one point into adept destruction, two points in fireball and two points in lightening. My strongest spells are fire bolt (adept) and lightening bolt (adept). Both spells do almost no damage to any dragon I've encountered. I can't really tell the difference between different dragon types yet.

That's more ore less the answer I was looking for. I'm not particularly concerned, but just wanted to make sure it wasn't odd that I am so ineffective against dragons at this point.

Magic users need a tank. Get an Atronach, the Flame one is good, and use it to distract the Dragon while you practice dual wield lightning bolts on it. Getting a good bow and some Archery perks is very useful for Dragons as well.

Enjoy it while it lasts. By the time you're in your early twenties you'll be able to kill them easily provided you have something to protect you from their breath attacks. You can find shields that give you 40% protection, and there's a block perk that gives you a 50% protection to elemental attacks. Once you've got that there's not much to fear from them.

Trust me, when you first start fighting dragons, it's a battle for survival for any charater build. It's just a matter of perserverance and using the right spells or attacks on them. You should pay attention to the sort of breath that the dragon uses; if it's breathing fire, hit it with ice spells, and vice versa. As you start getting better equipment, spells, and perks, the fights get easier.

At least until the Ancient Dragons start showing up and wipe out your health in one frost breath -_-

I recently started a new character, a nord warrior type...and after running around with a high level character, I have had my tail handed to me on a plate. I had forgotten just how weak characters are at the low end.

You can start fighting them at any time, they scale to your level so they are never all that difficult. Your first dragon encounter, will likely be the the hardest, harder than even Alduin. Aside from your first encounter though, they won't be all that hard down the line with a reasonably optimal character.

Depends what difficulty you're on, for adept it's easy to kill a dragon whatever your level.

I was at level 9 with my first dragon. It was an accident, i discovered a new area and saw something sitting on top of some stairs. I was curious and so I have walked closer - and then he woke up. I was certain I would die. I took my sword and gave all I could. And I had survived. Man, I was surprised!
You can beat your first dragon on low level...

i find that my mage has a very hard time killing dragons. he's level 14 i think, i just can't do it unless i have my highborn ability ready for use..even then, it's a stretch. blasting out max damage spells and using potions, i just dent their hp, even on adept. it's stupid..

Aren't cerain dragons immune to fire damage? And some immune to frost? If not immune than they should have some high resistance to the type of element they breath.
If a dragon breathes fire, I believe it's nearly immune to fire spells. I could be wrong though, I don't use magic much, maybe my spells were just weak.

Yeah, if a dragon breathes fire, I think it has at least a 25% resistance to fire, and the same goes if it breaths ice/frost. So you hit them with the opposite element to inflict extra damage; they take like 25% more damage from the opposite element of what they breath.

Well sponges are really hard to burn, so 50% of the dragons should be no threat at all, watch out for those frost dragons though.

My low level Necromancer only uses frost spells and has a hundred health on master, I have found no way to successfully take on a dragon only using frost spells so I have to run for it. Best I can try and survive until it lands then summon frost atronach - at least that's my plan when I get that spell, don't know if he will even do any damage against frost breathing dragons though.

See... I'm confused here. Because at level 7 my mage was having his ass handed to him by a dragon using apprentice level spells. So he upgraded to adept level and handed the dragon its ass right back. He had less perks in destruction than you....

Playing on expert. No perks boosting damage.

I play on expert, and I had only trouble with fighting dragons until level 12. My suggestion is that you should try to lure the dragon to a location there you can hide from his attacks, like a structure, and fight him out of this place

Btw.: No, Ancient Dragons are not that tough^^

Early on my assassain had trouble with dragons since (like a mage) she was rather squishy.
She used terrain to protect herself, sniped with her bow and let guards or followers do most of the work/take most of the attention.

Trust me, when you first start fighting dragons, it's a battle for survival for any charater build.

Some get it pretty easy. An Orc (or Argonian) warrior who makes strong use of smithing can easily handle the dragons they encounter if they've invested in hp's and can trigger their daily. I know because I went the Argonian route, though I did hold off a while on the main quest because I was started off running the Civil War & Companions lines.

And yeah, having a follower to tank for yah is a big help, too.
