Where Are All The Fat People Yo?

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 3:02 pm

This has only just occurred to me but why are there no fat people in the TES universe? Throughout history and even the fantasy genre there are always fat kings or leaders. Normally the sign of someone being overweight is a good indication that they are bad. The fat Jarl that stuffs his face while his people starve is a classic, albeit, cliché. It just seems odd that everyone is a buff model.

Fat people are slower and therefor are eaten by trolls and mudcrabs.

To much work to create different models for races. Easier to just make everybody look fit.

I don't mind it. I see enough fat people in the US as it is, I'd rather not see anymore in a game.

Yeah at the very least a couple of the jarls and such would have been fat in those days, although in saying that in Skyrim rulers are expected to be able to fight, if you were just an immobile blob someone would challenge you to one-on-one combat and kill you.

There is clipping issues with the armor I guess you know being big and all, they just can't seem to fit.

In all actuality I would like more frames for different builds.

I had to mod it in to create my http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b148/ActionDragon/Skyrim/Fish-Breath/Fish-Breath191.jpg.

I modded it in in Oblivion too...Fat characters are funny.

Not true! My character has 70% movement speed, and they rarely catch him. :hehe:

Otheral, hello there!

A sensible post. While I would love having different builds, modelling would just get too much time consuming. Unless, of course, Bethesda could devise some sort of parametric models which would automatically adjust and fit different body builds.

I will donate $400 to Bethesda if they declare this character as the canon Dovahkiin.

When Mcdonalds/Burger King gets to place a fast food chain in Skyrim, then you will start seeing fat people

Or you could always pretend it's from having to walk everywhere. I know I do. Heck, even riding a horse you're going to burn quite a bit in calories. Although it would make sense for some richer people to be porky. Or at least fleshy. Looking at feudal societies, it's likely that those were the only people who were fat. All the stuff you would have to do just to keep fed and warm would prevent much weight gain.

Fatness would be unrealistic in general. Swinging a sword and getting easily winded are a bad combination. I could see townsfolk of means or maybe a lazy mage. But no fat merchants. In truth a merchant would often be traveling, and traveling, as mentioned, burns calories. Always found the 'fat greedy merchant' trope really irritating for that reason. Those guys did not fool around and count coins with greedy sausauge fingers all day. And the greedy part is stupid too because they were working class types, or at least as working class as you can get in a feudalism-inspired agrarian society. /end mini-rant.

But realistically, yeah, it's the armor/clothes. Same reason for the standard heights. (Except for danged Cicero. He's shorter than a female Breton and that's just...madness.)

It's a poor country, with limited food, a cold climate and plenty of exercise. I'd expect thin people. People in the US and Western Europe see a lot of fatties and assume that is normal, but the majority of the world's population are thin. The only one who might get fat in Skyrim are the Jarls.

And like I said Jarls in Skyrim are expected to be able to defend themselves, for if they can't defend themselves how are they expected to defend their people ? If a toned warrior encountered an overweight Jarl he may well challenge him to one-on-one combat and slay him.

It would not seem as realistic if the characters that run (or ride a horse) and fight all over the country would be overweight. But I could see reality in some of the townspeople that are more sedate being overweight. Like the Jarl's stewards or cooks. Not rediculously big-I am looking for reality here not humor- but overweighrt enough to indicate a sedate lifestyle. Maybe some of the characters in the colleges.

Wouldn't they just cast a spell to make themselves thin though ? Maybe mage cosmetic surgeons is a booming underground industry in Skyrim that we don't know about.

Why would you want fat people in the game? That plus fat people are slower, you try being fat (or skinny) and outrunning a grizzly bear in real life.
