Or you could always pretend it's from having to walk everywhere. I know I do. Heck, even riding a horse you're going to burn quite a bit in calories. Although it would make sense for some richer people to be porky. Or at least fleshy. Looking at feudal societies, it's likely that those were the only people who were fat. All the stuff you would have to do just to keep fed and warm would prevent much weight gain.
Fatness would be unrealistic in general. Swinging a sword and getting easily winded are a bad combination. I could see townsfolk of means or maybe a lazy mage. But no fat merchants. In truth a merchant would often be traveling, and traveling, as mentioned, burns calories. Always found the 'fat greedy merchant' trope really irritating for that reason. Those guys did not fool around and count coins with greedy sausauge fingers all day. And the greedy part is stupid too because they were working class types, or at least as working class as you can get in a feudalism-inspired agrarian society. /end mini-rant.
But realistically, yeah, it's the armor/clothes. Same reason for the standard heights. (Except for danged Cicero. He's shorter than a female Breton and that's just...madness.)
