wheres all the deathclaws?

Post » Fri Apr 22, 2011 2:23 am

Well, i'm freaked out because everyone talks about how powerful these things are, but even in FO3 i didn't see a single one, and i had A LOT of play-time, and i did 2 different play throughs.

As for New Vegas, i haven't seen any yet, and i have roughly 10 hours of gameplay, give or take an hour.

I have NO clue what i should do if i ever meet up with one. I'm playing on Hard im pretty sure..

any tips or techniques... and where i could find one

Go north from goodsprings, to the quarry.

Avoid at all costs.

Try the Quarry near Sloan. Plenty there. Warning: They are very strong and terrifying. You may want to level up quite a bit first.

As for FO3? I'm shocked you never saw any if you played that much. After level 14 or so they were all over the north. Not to mention there is a whole town (name eludes me now) that's overrun with them no matter what your level. But Deathclaws in FO3? pvssycats. New Vegas? Holy crap!

Go to the quarry north of Sloan. You will die... repeatedly. Like... a lot.

What's more surprising is that Deathclaws are (sort of) part of the main storyline of FO3. When the Enclave starts setting up camps, several of them will have tame Deathclaws in cages. There really are quite a lot of Deathclaws in the game, if you think about it... it's surprising not to run into any at all.

I crossed a river near the southeast and once on the other side I was moving south til I found an opening in the ridge wall to the east. Upon finding one, 2 Deathclaws rushed Boone and me. I took a shot with (what I thought) was my since-then trusty Cowboy Repeater, which had been damaging the FRUCK out of baddies before there. I VATS'd the first only to find that 3 successive shots near point blank barely took off 20% of his health.

The first slash me, forcing me to retreat to the waters, hoping that they couldn't follow. As soon as I hit the water, I was notified that Boone was killed, and the Death claws actually can't swim, but they run full speed along the floor of the water. The one pursuing me was close enough to swipe me one more time and kill me.

...a good first impression...

This is good info. Now I know where to never go! Considering how obnoxiously tough cazadors are I'd make damn sure to avoid Deathclaws.

I met my first one going through Primm Pass. It was called a "blind deathclaw" if im not mistaken. I didn't even come close to surviving the encounter around level 10. I have yet to kill one of those things. I love it. It really gives you a sense of danger in the wasteland. In fallout 3, I felt invincible there. In new vegas, I really have to be on my toes.

i know eveyones already said it plenty but. .. .

to have played 2 full leveled up characters in FO3 without seeing a single deathclaw has to be statiscally about the same as winning the lottery, haha seriously

seems completely impossible, must have been a scratch on your disc where the deathclaw code was, didn't see any giant red exclaimation points running around did you?

Ditto. I'm loving this. In FO3 I'd walk through the wasteland and when I saw a red blip on my compass I be like "Cool, more XP." Now I see red blip, crouch instantly to ascertain if I've been seen then frantically save the game if I haven't, the whole time thinking "Oh crap, what it is it! Is it coming towards me!?! Where can I run if I have too!?!?!?!" LOL.

Much more fun.

I've succeeded in killing Young Deathclaws, but have yet to kill an advlt (level 12). I don't think I'm going to try taking those bastards on again until I'm at least level 20. Hopefully by then I'll have some decent armor. Half-repaired Metal Armor just isn't cutting it.

LOL.. plenty at the Quarry Junction, somewhere near Sloan or the Khan's encampment. Be sure to get yourself a .50MA rifle gun which deals 110 damage, and a good metal armor, stand on the top of th mountain and snipe those Death claws. Be sure to kill the Alpha Deathclaw male and the Deathclaw Mother, collect her eggs, sell them for 600$ each? And find ............ a FAT MAN in the radicated water :D

I really don't understand not running into a death claw in 2 play throughs of fallout 3.

I have yet to be able to get into that quarry. Man, I know there's some good loot in there. I think I might stealth boy it and see what's really in there.

My first experience with Deathclaws came when I was exploring the Northeast of the map. I saw some red lines and ED-E started taking some pot shots (despite being in passive mode). I was a bit scared when I saw that ED-E had managed to aggro 3 deathclaws. But I thought that I had a chance since I was level 17, Veronica had fully repaired T-51 power armor on, and I had a fully repaired Q-35 to do some serious damage.

Anyway, I almost killed one of them before we got wiped.

Once you finally kill a deathclaw it's much more satisfying.

I encountered the 3 at primm pass at level 20, and killed them with my trusty brush gun firing hollow points, about 3 shots to the head will take them down.

LOL right! I was wandering around yesterday chasing down the undiscovered location arrows when I wandered upon the opening of a cave with 6 or more Deathclaws of all ages. Ed-e started shooting at them while I was trying to sneak away. I was able to kill 2 young Deathclaws with the Incinerator but was instant toast when the bigger guys caught up to me. There are a lot of things in the Wastes that are giving me hell this time around. I remember having a turning point playing Fallout 3 where everything went from difficult to pretty easy. It was after running through the Hotel and Hospital section. I am wondering if that same thing will happen in NV eventually.

Besides the Quarry, I've also found that Dead Winds Cavern holds the King of all deathclaws. That's right, the "Legendary Deathclaw" including several advlts and a mother deathclaw.

I was only a level 12 and through alot of trial and error I succeeded in killing that mofo

Just don't do what I did and go in after doing a mission, I was so low on Stimpacks that I practically used up my entire food and drink, gained several addictions due to chems and was severely wounded and must've died at least dozens of time, also going in with Lily is your best bet for a companion and maybe rex too

I cleared the quarry alone because I didn't want my allies to die. I left the dog and my human companion back and cautiously advanced into the quarry after I cleared the ones on the highway near the quarry and the hills surrounding the quarry. I was using the anti-material rifle and taking head shots from sneak mode. The times I encountered problems were when my first shot missed and then I wound up being charged by two of the things at once.
