But I got a friend from inside a nordic ruin once. That was full of drauger.

They're talking about where you first used your thu'um. Not where the courier finds you. He can find you anywhere. Even in the middle of battle (which is highly annoying).

You should only stop getting them when you have all the words. I don't remember what it is, but there is generally a way to MAKE the courier appear. Look it up on wiki
I would but i'm way to lazy for that. the wierd thing is that i still get letters from couriers but never the letters from "a friend" not even on new characters

If you have a letter from him already and haven't completed it, you won't receive a new one until you do.

Otherwise - try shouting in a crowded area.

I have another theory: it's not Arngeir, but one of the other Greybeards, secretly helping out. :P

Or possibly a friendly draugr.

The first one you get is after killing the dragon and then shouting somewhere public. Happens a few days after the shout.

It took quite a while before my first Dragonborn got a letter, for shouting in Riften. After that, she got letters after shouting in empty caves and ruins with nothing but soon-to-be-definitely-dead draugr.

My second Dragonborn got her first letter like ten seconds after being summoned by the Greybeards.

Yeah, it should - the (optional) thing? That's the only shouting I did on my most recent character so far and he's received a letter already.

I personally like to think that it's one of the characters we made from the previous games (i.e. the Nereverine or the Hero of Kvatch).
Hero of Kvatch = Skyrim's Sheogorath
And who's to say the Nerevarine might not be the Dragonborn? The Nerevarine is unable to die of old age anyway.

But I got a friend from inside a nordic ruin once. That was full of drauger.
And mine traveled with me to the Throat of the World, to Blackreach, to the deepest room of Avanchnzel, etc. Because it was once at the TOTW, I started assuming it was a shy P'nax or a sneaky greybeard. They're at least able to know when you use a shout since they called on you.
Or it's the courier himself. People have noticed him running out of a lift to Blackreach anyway.

If you're referring to the notes you get directing you to where you can find more word walls, then it's not that difficult, really. You get those letters after you use a shout in a populated area. Then a "friend" sends you a letter to help out. So you can assume that the mysterious friend is someone from the crowd that wants to remain anonymous. As for why this friend remains anonymous, it's because the Radiant Story system isn't sophisticated enough to give that friend a name. You perform an action and that triggers an event. The best it does it keep track of what world space you were in when you triggered it, but doesn't seem to be able to keep track of who else was there with you.
This isn't true at all because you can get the letter after shouting in any location, whether it be a city or a dungeon filled with only draugr that you just killed.

The more I think of it, the more I suspect there's a secret network of friendly draugr. You know all those draugr that don't wake up to fight you when you're in dungeons? I bet they are the ones making sure there's fresh food, conveniently placed potions and lit candles to help adventurers take care of their more violent kin. Sure they could hear you shout and send you letters to help you further.

I like the courier theory as well :)

Possible the friend is one the 9 divines (akatosh or most likely Talos) just trying to help the dovahkiin out.

I could see that. Talos sends a message (like a godly message) to somebody and they send the letter to the Dragonborn!

Not that I don't like a good conspiracy theory, but I think you're overthinking this, OP. In the past the Nords used the thu'um a lot, now it's out of favor, but there would probably be old timers or scholarly types who still know what is what. The thu'um is controversial so they're not coming out and telling you what they know.

I'm supporting this theory. About half of the coffins don't open up when you pass, and there are always a bunch of draugr who are unarmed, lying in their beds or wrapped up in their blankets. Next time, don't steal from them when you clear out a dungeon!

The Guard's,most likely and they never give names and most are friendly to you?

I quite like this idea, after all most guards were adventurers so maybe the came upon the word walls in their travels

Judging by the fact that I was recently sent a letter, saying my Thu'um was impressive in Morvarth's Lair, through which I was never once spotted... And considering I only used Aura Whisper... I conclude that the Mysterious Friend is...

The Dremora Lord I'd summoned at the time. I had no idea he was so knowledgable about Nirn.

Nope I used a mark of death on some drauger . Then in the letter it said something about something or other barrow. Which sorta caught me off gaurd and creeped me out. Someone is stalking me...

I wouldn't say the thu'um is out of favor...just no one tries to learn it anymore, because there is no need with all the dragons gone (now that they're coming back, I would have liked to see Bethesda make people start flocking to High Hrothgar to try to start learning the way of the voice, but w/e). What IS out of favor is Talos....so maybe since Talos was a dragonborn the person doesn't want to openly support a dragonborn.

But I can see where you're coming from. Just trying to sponsor critical thought, is all ;)

The reason I say that it's out of favor is that the guards warn you not to do it anymore and says it's making people nervous.
