Why are bandits in mines?

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 5:09 am

There is always some mining, I see them and hear them. I don't get it. You take from the innocent, murder, evade and live outside the law and society because...it means you get to work really, really hard underground? I don't get it.

Why the heck would a bandit be mining ore? And if it's a captive being forced to mine ore, why do they attack you?

I guess there's good money in owning resources like that.

I wish we could take over and lead some bandit groups btw.. Have them do a lot of mining work for me.

Bandit thing aside, it really bothers me how captives and Falmer slaves attack you. Most of the people in this game who attack you do so without any logical reason.

Well, they're bandits.

Being an outlaw makes living out in the open pretty dangerous, what with bounties and such.

So, you're hiding out in a mine... you love sparkly baubles...

Why wouldn't they mine?

You'd definitely think they would be more appreciative, yes.

It's not like they know you, or even speak the same language as you (regarding Falmer, etc). They just see you as just another person sneaking down into the mine to steal things and kill people- and, really, that's not what you were going to do?

I'm not talking about Falmer who are slaves, I'm talking about the slaves the Falmer keep. And that's really not good reason, if I saw some guy break in and start busting my slave-driver's head... my first instinct wouldn't be "I should leap on that guy saving me in a futile effort to punch him to death!"

Honestly it makes sense, in Morrowind mines they'd have guards that'd bust you for stealing ore, so from stealing the ore you'd be stealing from the entire town's profit or a certain mining company. If bandits have their own mine they don't have to pay anyone for anything and all the ore is theirs.
That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Because they can craft better armor and weapons than they could ever loot.

I can deal with it . Even bandits need certain resources to help fund the robbing n' stealing.

Why are bandits in forts, why are bandits in caves, why are bandits standing by the road? You could ask that about anything really. Does there have to be a reason for everything? Who knows in that world why anything really happens other than the people writing the story? It doesn't always have to make perfect sense to us.

There is significant Septims in the resources of the land. If a bandit cane across a cave filled with hundreds of thousands maybe even millions worth of gold it would he worth tunneling to get that kind of money. It could be far more lucrative than robbing say three houses.

Bandits need a place to hide and ore in Skyrim sounds very valuable if you talk to the miners. I don't see an issue here.

edit; yes, slaves attacking you is weird though

Really, I wasn't asking why they existed. I was asking why they were doing hard work. Grab a pickaxe and start pounding on the side of a mountain. You'll understand really quick. Just seems illogical that someone would embark on a life of crime, just to be a coal miner.

And, yeah, there has to be a reason for everything, and yeah, it does have to make sense :)

Make up your own reason then. Nobody's going to know for sure. Role Playing you know? To me they have down times like anyone else. I remember reading some notes left behind by some dead bandits in one cave where they had some reason why there weren't any travelers on the road in that area so they were struggling to make ends meet. I guess you gotta fill your down time with something. If the boss says to mine you mine. Even the bandit groups have a leader. I'm sure he puts his boys to work during the lean times. There's no easy life in Skyrim. That's how I've looked at it. Just come up with your own reason. It's not so hard.

They aren't mining coal, they are mining ore to make weapons. Plus a mine is a defensible position.

Bandit's didn't generally choose a life of crime - if you listen to them, they lament how they've been marginalized and driven to extreme behaviors to survive. They're working in the mines because it's a source of income - if they can get enough money to pay off their bounties, they can walk into town as free men and women.

Well, someone's got to mine the stuff for all those amulets of mara. Remember, purchase non-conflict jewelry. :)

So they can extract ore, with which to make weapons to kill you with. They're often accompanied by smithing stations as well...

But no smelters, as far as I can tell.
Step 1: Mine Ore.
Step 2: ????????
Step 3: Smith Weapons

Skyrim gets enough heat from outside sources, shouldn't even be smelters in the game.
