Why can't my character be the leader, king, or ruler?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 8:42 am

Fallout 3 - at best you are a gun for hire

Fallout NV - at best you are a LT for some faction

Skyrim - Again your a LT for some faction

Why wont they let us be high king, empress, or grand poobah?

Why must we always be the main part of the game but never the true leader/winner?

In TES games you are a [censored] leader but a kickass errand boy.

Morrowind: You can become head of one of the three most powerful factions in the country. You can become head of the body that handles all assasinations, you can become the head of the body that has a monopoly on all fighting contracts
Arena: You can become one of the greatest heros of the world and one of the Emporers most trusted friends

Dragonborn as Jarl makes me think of them sitting around on a throne all day, listening to villager dribble, stopping only to produce spoiled noble children. :T

To be serious, the same goes for emperor/emporess. Just can't imagine anyone in the Council(?) or in a high position of power letting the ruler of the empire roam around all willy-nilly. Under the situation where such a ruler explores the land freely, it'd kind of imply them not having any real power anyway, right? Sounds like it goes against the spirit of the idea. Just my opinion, though.

If they didn't do it right, I think it'd likely end up seeming shallow or cumbersome, like Fable 2/3's take on it or worse. Fable's NPCs, for example, recognized you as king/queen because they were all the same generic blobs. In a game like TES, everyone has some kind of purpose/voice/etc., so it'd be hard not to have a situation like what we have now in Skyrim with you as the Thane or the leader of a guild. Rarely does anyone recognize you as such. This option done wrong would just be... empty. :[

I don't personally find it very realistic to think of being a Jarl, or some type of thing like that. It would actually be rather boring, having to sit on your throne all day and tend to your people. You would lose your life as an adventurer. You're meant to go out and explore, see the world, help people in your own way. It's different being a leader of a group of people (guilds) as compared to all people of a nation or hold. I suppose if that is what you want, you're free to express that, but myself, as a player, would find that really weird to occur (and probably question Bethesda on such a thing).

This

Also in Skyrim you get to be a Thane of each hold, that is one of the highest ranking and one of the most respected titles in Skyrim. Also in Oblivion you can become a Daedric Prince.

I would not want to be a King/queen or anything of the sort.

Wait, you're actually serious. If you really think about, even only for a couple seconds, you'll realise that it will never work...

Thane is an honorary title with no real power

You might have became Sheogorath but it really didnt stick because your character obviously isnt Sheogorath in the next game

I understand the argument that you can not be both royalty and an adventurer, but it is a rpg, its a perception that you cant do that, why cant you? Generals fight at the front line, why not a Jarl that adventurers for their citizens?

Just tired of doing all the work in these games and becoming a foot note in history

Oh well its not that annoying

While taking over DC or Vegas would make sense, and maybe taking over Cyrodiil after the mess the death of the last Septim left, you would really have to be a Nord in Skyrim, or welcome to another civil war.

Being a Jarl in Skyrim wouldn't be all mead and servant girls.

There would be bandit raids and dragon attacks. Repairing walls and fortifications.

Who am I kidding? It would be a chest in your throne room, filled with a few hundred septims and a steel warhammer every few days. And nothing else.

Becasue this is Elder Scrolls, not Fable.

The aim in Elder Scrolls games is always to save the land from some evil.....not to rule over all of it.

Also just because you are a great warrior instead of a king doesn't mean you'll just be a footnote in history.

Who is more recognized, Agamemnon or Achilles

Wrong the CoC is the new Sheogorath, holding the mantle of Madgod for 200 years transformed him into the Sheo that we see in Skyrim. He used to be the Champion of Cyrodil, but then he took a Shiverinisles in the knee. also if you listen he talks about being there when Martin ended the Oblivion crisis

This would have been an awesome "third faction" in the civil war, akin to the "Wild Card" path in New Vegas. Great for those guys who want Skyrim free from the Empire and their Thalmore overlords, but don't feel like Ulfric's the man to run a newly independant Skyrim. As high-king you could leave all the governance to your Jarls, so you'd still be able to adventure around. The crime system would change as follows: minor crimes are forgiven. Theft, a murder or two, whatever, it's good to be the king. Go on a massive killing spree or something racking up several thousand in bounty, however, and that region will declare itself independent of your rule and you'd have to reconquer them.

well, you do get to be the saver of the planet, but apparently nobody cares if you just saved the entire planet, especially the npc's that wanted it to be destroyed so that it could be reborn again.

NO WAY! its bad enough that im put in charge of the only magic school in skyrim within less than a week of meeting them. on top of that apparently im the only listener for the DB in the last couple of decades AND i replace the "harbringer" within a week of meeting the Companions as well, and of course there is that saving the world thing. i have to go out of my way and make seperate characters for the different questlines so that i dont feel like superman.

its a bit ludicrous that they let you do what you do. Fallout had a much better and more realistic system where you were recongnized for you contribution but you arent the universes golden wonderkid. you were give a rank and some rewards for tasks done but at no time were you put in charge of the BoS or the NCR or the Legion. even if you took vegas for yourself you still needed an AI to run everything for you and you still had missions to get the support of other factions.......ala morrowind and getting the houses to recognize you as the nevarine.
