Why Can't Digital Copies be Unlocked at Same Time Worldwide?

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:40 pm

Well?

Why do our American Borthers and Sisters get to play this fantastic game 3 days before we, who live in the rest of the world, get to?

We buy digital copies expressly so that we don't have to worry about the stores screwing up our order or the delivery running late due to problems.

How would having digital copies being activated all at the same time create a problem? It won't affect any store sales because we just buy through Steam or D2D or whatever and download the digital copy.

And since this is a single player game we won't get an advantage over anyone else by playing it sooner.

Can anyone answer why non-americans have to wait for digital activation?

A digital copy is one where you download it from the internet and it is stored on the computer until it is unlocked.

You are thinking of buying a physical copy over the internet which requires a parcel to be delivered before you can play.

It wouldn't surprise me if vendors won't carry a game if they know people can get it through Steam and D2D several days earlier for the same price. Which means Bethesda needs to keep the release dates consistent in each location.

To unlock Steam versions in Europe tonight would be really screwing retailers selling the retail version.

In other words, it's part of their contract with retailers who sell physical copies.

Well in this day and age, you would think that they should still have a worldwide release date for retail and digital copies -_-
Set it to the 19th for worldwide, I dont care if I have to wait 12 hours into the 19th, at least its the same bloody date, not 3 days away. Every store around the world would have the game in their backroom just waiting to be put on the shelves.

And it adds insult to injury when steam cant get their dates right and have the release time as the 19th then change it to the 22nd as soon as it hits the 19th. 1am on the 19th and kinda pissed off at this [censored] always happening.

GG  :sadvaultboy:

That would be an error if anything. Steam always follows the retail release schedule and every European gamer I know knew they weren't getting unlocked until the twenty-second.

If Steam or Digital sales are such a threat to retailers then why do companies deal with them?

When you get down to it, Digital copies of games have much more profit margin for their publishers/distributers because they don't have to create physical copies of the game and manual which costs money.

Treating different regions of the world for digital copies of a game is just silly.

It's that. It's to protect what is left of the offline retail market. As long as possible.

Well it is time then that you decide to make a release date that works better then MIdnight in the US and release it everywhere. This world is not small anymore and most of us are big boys and big girls who can work around releases at bizzar times in the morning.

I would rather be playing the game with everyone else then waiting for my local area to hit midnight for no other reason then because it's what has always been done. Time to start marching into the 21st century and leave behind the thinking of the 80's

Indeed, and I very much support this. Online content is Great, but I think we would all suffer if the brick and mortar stores wen't away. We have to support them!

Folks who have pre-ordered a digital version of the game weren't planning on going to a retail store for purchase anyway.....

Get a business degree, start a game publishing company, sign some distribution agreements and then come back and explain the "new reality" to us again.

Yes but if Steam was getting it several days earlier chances are many of the people who pre-ordered from other stores would have gone with Steam instead.

Ye but its a fact steam tried to scam gammers so they can earn profit up till 1 hour ago european steam was showing 1 day to release and then it changed to 3 days 8 hours !

As I said in your thread on this topic this is a complaint to bring to Steam rather than discussing it here. Bethesda had the release date announced some time ago.

Well to be honest most of the games now are sold through major retail chains - the specialised ones while nice don't serve much purpose now. I buy all my games electronically and I am happier for it - I am unhappy I have to wait for it just because I happen to live somewhere.

New reality is that you don't have to wait for a game to be physically shipped from one country to another before it can be released.

Digital releasing of games is the new reality and with technologies like Steam you have a built in copy-protection scheme that can't be easily avoided.

Perhaps in Your opinion they don't matter, but me and about 1,000,000 other people would disagree with you. I very much enjoy going to my GameStop for new games as I get to ask questions about it and often pick up info that I might not know otherwise. Plus my kids get to shop for games when I go.

You can be unhappy to wait all day, I'm very glad they are doing it - supporting brick and mortar stores is more important than 2 or 3 days of waiting for a single title.

Thats exactly why it would affect store sales. If Steam started selling FNV tomorrow in the UK then places like GAME, HMV, ASDA, etc would all lose out on a lot of sales.

@Sokushinbutsu

But surely you knew the dates were wrong - playing the blame game doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to ensure your distribution methods are being correct.
If the game is sold early and breaks the date agreement all other stores are permitted to sell it early while the store that sold early gets reprimanded. But when a date is listed incorrectly and corrected with no reasoning you throw your hands up in the air and say "not it"?

Yeah thats fine for you.
But for the rest of the world we get a little irritated about being placed last on releases. And it is a direct influence of piracy - if the game is not released on time but is cracked out there then people will get the cracked version just so they can play it. I mean the TV industry figured it out pretty quick - make international countries wait longer for shows and they will watch it online. So now it is shown within hours of screening in the US they had to do it to stop losing revenue. Well now Games are facing the same situation instead of releasing early they just try to make money by DLC and release dates and the like. Want the bricks and mortar stores to be supported then they need to embrace direct download and be able to create discs with CD keys and DLC on it for people to buy and then take home so they don't have to Download it if they have bad net or limited quotas.

Hmmmmm I understand your frustrations, really I do - I would be angry and upset too if I had to wait 3 extra days to play - but where are you getting the rest of it? What facts or research can you site that would definitively conclude that the gaming and TV industries force other nations to "wait" so they will watch it on-line?! To me that doesn't even make sense, I can't follow the business logic of why anyone would delay for That reason in today's day and age. And to blame it on piracy is a little off - the game was cracked/released on Friday (the 15th), so copies are already all over the place even before the US release - a delay for other nations would not influence that at all - its going to happen irregardless.

Again I appreciate that your upset, but I think any far-reaching conspiracy theories or evil-theories as to why there is a delay are misplaced. There are clearly (to me) business reasons why it had to be delayed, and we will likely never understand them all.
