My guess is because the "dragon born" was there. Alduin looks right at you while you're kneeling at the block.

The stuff about Ulfric is just misdirection.

No reason other than the game revolves around the player.

I think it is a coinsident. Alduin is arrogant and probably wanted to make his first appearance big and what is better than a town used by the legion as a base and is full of soldiers? The Dragonborn jst happened to be there.

Destiny.

Dragonborn must ultimately face Alduin, and it probably wouldn't look good for Alduin to crispy fry Dovie while he has his hands tied up and dressed in rags...keeping in mind that later in the story it turns out that things aren't rosy for Aldie in dragonland.

Dragons are all divine creatures, more than animals, but Alduin is more divine than the rest. He's an aspect of the Time God and a member of the Nordic pantheon. You can't kill him. He will still come back sometime later to devour the universe, just like he did the last hundred times.

We don't know. His physical form may have died, but his soul may have lived.

Alduin is eating the souls of the dead in Sovngard, and the civil war is sending many souls there to devour. He was rescuing Ulfric so the war wouldn't end.

I never thought of it like that.

Perhaps he was drawn to Helgen because the dragonborn was there? I doubt he KNEW that the dragonborn was there, but his natural curiousity and instincts would have drawn him to the dragonborn.
Plus, as someone mentioned, it was very close to the throat of the world, and a major imperial spot.

That doesn't make sense due to the fact that Alduin had just been sent forward in time when he appeared in Helgen. Alduin didn't enter Sovngarde until after he was beaten by the Dovahkiin at the The throat of the world during the MQ.

Could be he was looking for Dragonborn - Ulfric used a shout on the King - perhaps he tracked Ulfric there and was really after him to stop the Mythical end from coming true. If he could somehow "feel" the presence of the Dragonborn, he may have assumed that feeling came from Ulfric, thus his fears come true. When actually he was "feeling" your presence not Ulfric's.

That's how I would've written it.

Nope. Ivarstead.

It completely depends on which way he was going turns out it was Helgen.

Perhaps Alduin knew that the dragonborn was there through scent? Why else would he stared at the dragonborn just when he was going to get the chop? Maybe Alduin became possessive over his potential prey? He thought that it was him that deserves to kill the dragonborn and nobody else.

98% certain it was to keep the civil war going.

I think Alduin staring at the dragonborn was just a coincidence. I mean, the dragonborn was the closest person to him and directly in front of him, so the dragonborn was Alduin's first target.

Dragons like challenging each other, and I bet Alduin would rise up to a new Dragonborn, though at that moment you don't know you're Dragonborn yet. I think Alduin was there to save you, so he and the Dragonborn can eventually settle things.
