Why does beth keep cutting stuff?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 4:14 am

We lost a few features and gained a far, far more detailed world with much better dungeons. Isn't exploring the reason we fell in love with TES?
Not at the cost of a gimped and slaughtered magic system, a screwed up leveling system (they should of taken the perks from fallout 3 and combined them with attributes), the loss of at least a dozen skills from Daggerfall to Skyrim, etc.

But Morrowind still has more than both Oblivion and Skyrim.
It may have more (I haven't actually counted, and I don't believe anyone else has either). My point is that the amount of work put into Oblivion and Skyrim is at least equal to the amount of work put into Morrowind. Why were things cut? Because time allows only a certain amount of work to be done. They cut things because they don't have time to do it all and some things are more important to them than others.

It boggled my mind when it was announced that attributes had been cut. After their decision was made, however, they had no room for attributes. If they had made an upfront decision to include attributes, then they would have allocated resources for doing them. As it is, though, their resources, and their designs, were allocated to different things that otherwise would have been neglected.

As for why they choose to do one set of things instead of another, chalk it up to taste. I like pickpocket as a separate skill, but some others think it should have been combined with something else. I couldn't care less about children in the game, but others claim their absence would be a distraction. I may have been happier with a greater variety of weapons and weapons skills, but Bethesda feels it it more important to pass on variety for the sake of giving each weapon a more in-depth feel.

It really baffles me how much they keep cutting for each game.

It really baffles me how much they keep ADDING to each game.

Seriously, some old things are gone, but there are just as many new things. If I want to play Morrowind again I can stick it in the disc drive. Each game is different and a new experience.

Also, the amount of voice actors required to get the amount of content morrowind had into a modern game simply isn't feasible, bring back unvoiced, entirely text based conversations! The small loss of immersion really isn't a problem when you consider how much more content they could put in if they bypass the entire voice acting section.

Asking them to do this is like asking them to remove high end graphics. It's a non-starter in today's game market.

When people complain about something that was cut, why aren't they complaining about all the stuff that was added? After 300 hours of play, I'm not close to the end. I should make a thread complaining there's too much stuff in the game. I could make an insulting subject line for it. The game is so huge that it's stolen my life. I've lost all my friends and my family won't talk to me. The refrigerator is running out of food and ....

Sorry...have to go...there's a draugr after Argis.

:tes:

(The above was so not serious and Skyrim is awesome. Happy New Year.)

It really baffles me how much they keep cutting for each game. I don't even want to imagine what TES VI will be like if they keep this up. The fact that people are still whining about stuff being overpowered in a sp game does not help that fact. Like the people who whined about spell creation, and are now whining about smithing. I don't even want to imagine what wilm happen if beth listens to these people. What are mechanics\content that you guys want back in the next game?

The problem with people is they`ll always complain that something is a pain. then the Devs cut it in the hope that more people will like it.

What they forget that the nature of games is to provide a CHALLENGE, sometimes a person fails at the challenge; maybe they`re not very good or just impatientthen they post and say it`s a pain or annoying. That don`t mean it should be cut or got rid of. I mean did they really need to get rid of wear and tear? Couldn`t they just make wear and tear happen less frequently? Etc or even make it optional?

Let`s also remember that the majority that are happy tend not to post to say they don`t want things cutting, so we get an uneven view that appears to be just whines.

If Bethesda keep cutting everything that`s a supposed `pain` or annoying, it won`t be long before you start the game and just sit back and watch it to the end like Lord Of The Rings.

Then it will be the end of gaming.

The reason is plan to anyone who looks at it... it's a successful business model. They don't make games for the fun of it. They make games so that people will pay them to make more. If the games got more and more complicated, less and less people would play them and they would fail. The few that played them might enjoy them more... but the bottom line would suffer. By making the game more accessible to the masses, they sell more units.

This is my experience as well

I cannot replicate the Skyrim experience in Morrowind or Oblivion. The additions are simply too great.

Keep in mind that they are still making the game THEY want to make. Unfortunately, older fans keep whining whenever the game THE DEVELOPERS want to make does not coincide with the game THE FANS want them too.

Why would people "complain" about things added? the things added are all fine and dandy but they aren't what was lost, and they don't make up for whats not possible anymore. why can't one just accept that the General concensus is that Skyrim is good, its just missing the things that was possible in past games? why would anyone trying to make a case for something they miss undercut their point by saying "but we have this so I guess I should be content" ??

Games are dumbed down because of the wider market of consoles, so yes I do blame them. When you start adapting your game to a wider audience it becomes dumbed down and easy, which is why Skyrim is. Elder Scrolls works on consoles well because the technology of the game hasn't moved on, even Skyrim would fit nicely back in 2006 from a technology point of view.
No you blame the dumbed down players that need hand holding because they whine about everything being handed to them on a silver platter in this generation. Older games on consoles were more complex then the crap they release now and that is a fact. It is the audience out there that need to stop QQing every time they can't find a dungeon or whine they don't want to have to walk through the world. It is plain laziness on the part of the players and nothing to do with consoles.

I bolded the last part, because it's something I would love to see companies do more of... more choices for players is always a good thing.

Package TESVI as a complex RPG. Give us the subtlety and intricacies of Morrowind... but allow for a more detailed "settings" page so that you can turn some of them off.

Weapon & armor degrading, custom spells, stick-skill vs stat-based (e.g. lockpicking), etc.

One change I DO like is the elimination of classes, and birthsigns. I like not being locked into a play style from the character creation screen, and being able to do a little experimenting early on before deciding... it isn't important for your second playthrough, but it's nice the first time you pick up a game. That said, I would like to see them add a little bit more diversity between the races... right now playing a Nord doesn't feel very different from playing an Imperial or a Breton or even an Orc (other than visually from 3rd person).

I also really like the perks system as a replacement of classes. It still forces you to pick a playstyle if you want to really optimze it, you just do it as the game goes along, not on the front end. I would love to see them add more "general" perks that you can select every 5 levels or so (Fallout style) that don't necessarily fall into each of the skills. A perk like "Son of Skyrim" that lets you deal additional damage against non-Nords & imperial soldiers, or a "Ranger" perk that adds damage against animals and yields extra pelts. Obviously you need to stay within the Elder Scrolls lore and not just copy the Fallout perks, but I think it was a positive addition.

What baffles me is how they keep reducing the games features and still can't produce any decent semblance of balance. I mean granted, free build systems are insanely hard to balance, and hardly any game that offers them gets it just right, but most get it a lot more right than skyrim.

As much as I loved playing Morrowind, I could never get into as much after I played Oblivion, because I was spoiled with the voice acting and not having to read so much dialog. Personally, I like the changes that have been make to Skyrim and I feel that there is more freedom to play how you want then the previous games. It seems funny, but less choices resulted more options.

It`s not about a successful business model. The model is already successful, they make plenty of money. They just want to make MORE.

If somethings broken, useless, or causes problems then it should be cut. Not to mention that we have gained a lot in Skyrim in comparasion to the cuts.

I disagree with it changing, sure it changed graphically and Technologically, but its still the same thing. how weapons deal damage is more or less the same, what the spells do etc etc. how these things are achieved might be differen't but the TES series in terms of.....TES hasn't been anything Drastic in of itself like for example ME1 to ME2, or DA to DA2. so I don't know about all this "change" in the cannotation some folks like to use it as. change happens when things are added/removed or modified so I think a more direct point is in order when that word is phrased among a sentence or used as a point.

Ok, what are the things that were removed that were broken, useless, or caused problems? There wasn't really any feature or gameplay element from previous games that was outright broken unless you really tried to exploit it, yet plenty of things were removed.

I will say though, the amount added compared to the amount removed seems much closer to a wash than a net gain or loss, at least to me.

People like you are ruining gaming and I mean that very sincerely.

EDIT: Voice Acting is the worst trend in video games today. It is butchering the depth that RPG's once had. It is the bane of branching storylines. I am also so damn tired of hearing NPC's babble every time I walk within 5 feet of them.
