Why does Fallout not have more ghoul wannabes?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:32 pm

I forgot about her. So New Vegas does have it!

Well, actually it "and more." Trash not only wants to be a ghoul- she's a very good example of what kind of people would try it, and of what happens to them thus explaining why more people don't try it. Read her *ahem* "Die-aries."

I've read it. I'm sure lots of different reasons could be found for someone to try for immortality. And considering the average individuals understanding of probability, finding people willing to take the chance shouldn't be an issue. However, it's just nice to know there's some recognition that somebody... somewhere... might strive for it as a positive change.

They live a long time but according to most it's not very fun to be a ghoul.

You really think it would be functional?? like the skin wouldn't rip if you had the intercourse? Even for the women? lol Idk what pleasures men get out of things getting put in their hole(s), but I guess you're right if you meant it like that. I couldn't be water buffalo now as as Smooth Skin and I'm sure I wouldn't want to be one as a ghoul. :hehe:

Ghoul skin looks soft and rotten, like it's about to fall off or tear, but it's actually pretty tough and leathery. I doubt it would rip easily. They might not have much feeling though.

Since all ghouls look the same in Fallout 3 and NV, here are a couple of ghouls showing what they should really look like if the engine had the ability.

I'd say the engine has the ability to render anything in Fallout 1 or 2 as full figure realtime creatures (the model designs don't make much difference) ~ but.... lip syncing the ghouls would, since every talking creature (besides robots) uses the face-gen heads.

I would have greatly preferred they had made ghouls as creatures and not used the standard human assets. They did this with Ferals, but you notice Ferals never interact with chairs or clothing or weapons, and don't speak. They could have done them as Set and the rest were (as ghouls should have been done), but Gob, for instance, would have taken more work to create, and (I think) have been seen by some as reinventing the wheel.

Rather than doing research into increasing survival chances of ghoulification I'd invest in finding out if 1st generation super mutants process could be reproduced. 2nd generation, as I think we all know, are dumb!

I mean super mutants get all the perks of ghouls but with causing fear rather than disgust on top of that. I'm sold! :tops:

Even first gen super mutants are generally dumber than humans. There are exceptions though, like Marcus and the Lieutenant.

So the Narcotizing flesh, rotting stench, perpetually falling apart doesn't bother you? Also being sterile?

FO3 and NV Ghouls aren't really like the Ghouls of FO lore/originals

They really did look like walking rotted zombies in the original lore. Need I remind you of Eric in Broken Hills? When he sweated he produced a fluid that was like sweet nectar to flies so he was contently swarmed by them ALL THE TIME.

Your saying you'd volunteer for that?

You know what also causes necrotizing flesh, rotting stench, falling apart, and sterility?

Dying of old age. They're like liches without magic.

Then that would mean the average lifespan of a ghoul would be about 250+/- years.

The whole 'Might become a Raving Lunatic' thing kinda puts me off. Especially since there's still plenty of crazy Ghouls out there this long after the bombs fell. Either they're all slowly going crazy or most of them started off crazy.

Plus the whole discrimination thing counts against them.

If female ghouls are capable of pleasure, no reason to assume the males are not also.

Is it ever outright said that she enjoys it?

I always figured bumping ghoul uglies would have the same effect as rubbing a cheese grater on that area.

Not really, from what I remember about them is that there tissue is constantly dieing and regenerating. So they're perpetually on the edge of death/rotting to pieces.

Also you'd be so weak in most cases you wouldn't be able to run away or defend your self from anything. You still die from bullets. Everyone would want to shot you as a monster too.

At least you're alive to be shot at. As opposed to dead from old age.

You'd go nuts or develop severe memory loss... There is only so much space in a brain to hold information, and most people have difficulty retaining the details of the interrelationships of their friends when that gets to be over 149 of them.

Also... we can assume that the rotting-rebirth takes place inside the skull same as outside.

Yeah but if you're dead you don't have to worry about those things, so they aren't that bad.

I loved the Die ary of Trash, I felt it was aimed at a lot of folks here that dicussed wanting to play a ghoul courier, that however may just be me.

In Trash's case, I'm not sure I would consider it trying for a positive change. It seemed more like a prolonged form of suicide, an escape from her own body and some pretty extreme depression. I can't imagine someone like that becoming happier if they were immortal.

And just comparing numbers, it's obvious that the vast majority of ghouls turn feral. Of course, I don't think there were ferals in the original games, though many of them were not very nice (more hostile in Fallout 1 and less in Fallout 2 if I remember correctly).

The thing is ghouls seem to be increasingly more functional as the series progresses. In F1 they couldn't move fast because they were constantly in pain, or for that matter even wear clothes other than rags because the chaffing hurt so much. In F02 there were ghouls with armor and running, and in F3 they were pretty much stinking and ugly, but otherwise no other shortcoming. By NV even feral ghouls wore armor and sprinted faster than any human...

Even first gen super mutants are generally dumber than humans. There are exceptions though, like Marcus and the Lieutenant.

What defines the quality of the SM generated is how much radiation they have in their systems when they mutate. Ordinary wastelanders don't usually amount to anything much higher than Harry's level, but a vault dweller for instance would always become far stronger and more intelligent after becoming a SM.

Feral ghouls appear in Fallout (in random encounters, as "mindless ghouls"), Fallout 2 (as "ghoul crazies"),
