Why do my friends think this?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 5:04 am

Tell them that those people have full time jobs, are able to afford the best equipment, some are retired after working for many years and can now play games if they like, some make a living doing it. Then remind them when they turn 30 that they should give up their favorite hobby and entertainment because they are just too old.

Good grief.

BTW, I am moving this to CD as it is not about Skyrim.
Oh, and one is never too old to have a happy childhood.

My father is 48 and I am 20, and we both still play video games. My father is in his room playing Arkham City right now.

Just because of the perception that games are for kids. I personally don't think age matters as much as time spent on it. When you're younger you just have a lot more time to do nothing (ie video games).

My friends are BIG xbox gamers but when they see anyone over 20 playing video games they say stuff like "those guys need a life and a gf". I want to be playing video games for as long as i can and im sure my gf will too.

What are your thoughts?

The day they hit 20, take away all their Xboxes and games. And then see if they still think that :D

Your friends are hypocritical [censored]s. The average age of a gamer is like 32 or something, maybe you should tell them that?

Agreed. You're friends are being d-bags. Do your friends do anything besides playing video games? Sports? Read? etc.? I'm over 20 myself and I have plenty of stuff going on outside of playing video games a few times a week.

I just graduated from college where I was a part of two fraternities (one social, one service) and a member on several other boards and organizations. While in college, I also played on the lacrosse club team (we were terrible, but it was a blast) I've also had a steady girlfriend for the last 25% of my lifespan and am currently looking into working as a geologist for several environmentally-based companies. On top of that, I've been slowly learning how to play the ukulele for the last year.

I also love playing video games and Magic: The Gathering -- two notoriously "lifeless" pass-times.

That's what a lot of people think. Just ignore it. I always reply with something like "you watch movies? Ha!" or any other activity/hobby enjoyed by people of all ages.

They're voicing their inner turmoil. It's because of how they feel about themselves. You apparently have a life, a girlfriend, and games. :)

It's jealousy.

Indeed. Why this age rage I can never understand. I don′t think I ever will stop gaming. It′s like "Oh you′re older than 20, stop watching movies and listening to music!"

In the UK, over half the population said they regularly play video games. That makes anyone who doesn't play games unusual.

My husband plays games - mostly FPSs and action games. My father-in-law plays mostly puzzle games. My sister-in-law, her husband and kids play Wii games. My sister and younger nephews play Kinect sports and music games. My older nephew - like me - plays pretty much anything. His dad (i.e. my brother-in-law) plays mostly sports titles and FPSs. We're "normal" by modern standards. From that extended family group, you have four children under the age of 13, one older teenager, six people aged between 35-45 and one aged 70. The only non-gamers are my mum and HI's mum.

I dont have a GF, but I would play videogames when im 20+ (im 18). You can still have a life, people watch tv and have lives, no reason gaming cant be different.

Also having a GF would likely just keep me gaming as a co op partner. (assuming they played games).

But yeah, your friends are idiots. I would watch as they keep playing games, then when they are 20, hyped over a game. Remind them. Hopefully they will realise how stupid they are.

I remember watching Star Trek TOS first run.
I played the original Pong when it was new. In high school.
I've traveled from Long Island to Tucson on a motorcycle.
And crossed the country several other times in different forms of transportation.
Rode a touring bicycle and camped out on the Natchez Trace for 2 months.
During my USAF stint, I lived on Okinawa for a year and a half.
I've owned 2 houses and currently live in the 2nd.
Built a 1962 Harley Sportster from parts.
Rebuilt some other scoots.
Have 2 fine, advlt children I'm proud of.
Won trophies shooting USPSA locally.
I'm a fair wiz with Windows Mobile and Android phones.

I'm seeing the amazing things I dreamed about from Star Trek coming to fruition in every day reality.

Think I care what someone else thinks about my gaming habits?

53 and doing WTH I want to.

It depends on what having a life is. If you are going to college I would suggest you cut back on video games a bit because there are a lot of social interactions you will never be able to experience again but a year or so after you graduate, the concept of "having a life" is pretty much obsolete. (in the sense of partying all the time and status with more than 1 female).

Bottom line, I bet you and all your friends will still be playing in your late 20's. The video game bug does not go away if you have it (even if it can remain dormant at times).

I'm 24 and I still play, so I think that's bull. Considering that many games are rated 18, it seems odd to me that just a few years after being able to legally enjoy mature games, you'd just stop. They are called games, but it's not just for kids.

Your question is one that I ask myself often, too. Not precisely that, as my friends are nearing that age and, although they did say that when they were younger, can see the hypocrisy creeping up if they did say something like that. I'll give a recent example of what baffles me about the prejudices people build up and reinforce, yet go back on so often. My friend got me into World of Warcraft, a private server, and I have become pretty good at the game. He was in awe at how high my character could hit, so I said "Yeah dude I'm getting my nerd cred up. Playing Magic now, D&D and WoW." His response was "but WoW's fun." I started laughing, because I asked him not ten minutes before if he ever played Magic or D&D and he said no. I'm not the type to push something I enjoy on someone else, most likely because I have such nerdy interests and my local friends aren't nerds at all, but it just left me baffled. I don't really know what to make of it, people are just close minded idiots at times is all I can say.

That is actually a very misleading statistic. The majority of gamers are 13-24.

How can this be? It's simple.

gamer 1 = 15
gamer 2 = 20
gamer 3 = 55

Avg 30

That still implies that there are a lot of either young and old gamers, or a lot of middle-aged gamers. So....

I think they just make a basic assumption most youth do... they think life started with their generation, and so did games. I did have, myself, weird assumptions like that too, and I remember the shame of finding out I was soooo wrong. For instance, I though marijuana was brand new! :shakehead: I was still young in my teens, but... anyway.
