Every time I think about playing skyrim, I have no buzz whatsoever about the prospect of playing it. I have the forsworn conspiracy waiting to be done in my quest log, along with the entire main quest and the bulk of the mages college quests, and I honestly could'nt care less about completing them. The only thing motivating me to play is the combat, which is very fun.
The other day I installed morrowind, with nothing but some nice new textures and improved draw distance, and played about for a little bit. Now every time I think about playing morrowind, I get quite excited about the prospect. Main quest with mystery and intrigue, oodles of factions, a static world, that real rpg feeling of being a useless nobody at the beginning. The only thing putting me off playing is the clunky combat, but that is a sacrafice worth paying for the added sense of character progression it affords (i.e - literally seeing your hit-chance increase over time).

So how in the seven sordid realms of hell did this happen?? Am I simply a nostalgic morrowind apologist? An rpg elitist? Some sort of godawful oldschool rpg nerd? Nope, yet for some reason I want to play morrowind a lot more than skyrim. That svcks, because skyrim has the upper hand in so many areas - combat, graphics, 'freshness', physics engine etc. It is such a massive shame that the stories, factions, quests, character progression, and loot etc didn't manage to eclipse morrowind (or oblivion for that matter).

So I guess what I really need is morrowind in the skyrim engine, or perhaps I should just go play the Mod That Shall Not Be Named.

Any other weirdos out there that feel more of a pull towards morrowind than skyrim?

Hey, if you wanna play Morrowind, go ahead and play it. I'll be in Skyrim. But occasionally I like going back to Cyrodiil, too. Each TES game offers somethings the others don't.

yeah but I don't, thats the thing. What I really want is all the meaty goodness of morrowind, combined with the flashy modern-ness of skyrim : P

To respond to your actual thread the answer is quite simple, you enjoy Morrowind more. The successor shouldn't be looked at as better, or more enjoyable, nor does it have to be either of those things. That would be too linear and ultimately would be subjective. If you truly feel more pull towards Morrowind then play it. You enjoy an older game, and more importantly an older TES game so go play it and enjoy it. Don't waste your time trying to validate yourself via other people.

how am I trying to validate myself through other people? I'm just posting something on a forum that I felt like posting. Nothing to do with self-validation, I just enjoy discussing the series, especially the finer points of each, and their differences

You mean generate the same "Skyrim is bad" thread that has been made at least a bleeding thousand times since before Skyrim was released?

You pose too many questions that you never seem to answer, yeah that sparks conversation but you're also looking for others who feel the same way as you do.

not really, what I was after was some imput from other folk that have perhaps had a similar experience, maybe followed by a subsequent discussion about the reasons behind that. I find the subject quite interesting.

just because I'm trying to attract others to my thread who are like-minded, really doesn't mean that I'm seeking 'self-validation' - simply trying to earmark who the thread was aimed at (i.e - not the noisy rabble of skyrim kids who have jumped down my throat in this thread)

Maybe it's because in some ways Morrowind is superior, and in some ways not. I do go back and play earlier games, that's natural is you own them.

You enjoy Morrowind more than Skyrim with new textures and draw distance. That means with mods. Why don't you give Skyrim's mod community a full year and see if, perhaps, they can remedy this supposed lack of depth. Meanwhile, go play Morrowind.

I am willing to predict that in a year, you'll come back and find that Skyrim, with just some added mod goodness, blows Morrowind out of it's 2001 giant box.
