Why no love for macs

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 5:07 pm

Maybe your Uni, but mine has only about 30% penetration I'd say (if that), so it still wouldn't meet the definition of "popular"

Yeah, at my Uni, everyone had HP or Dell.

And me with my coughing and spluttering Acer. :P

Since it's the definition of popular? I'm not understanding your confusion. Maybe I speak from a purely Uni. standpoint where everyone seems to have one...

and at my university i saw absolutely no macs, and i spent all my time in the IT building where everyone brought a laptop with them

Some Unis are higher than mine here. California has a higher percentage of OS X usage than most of the US, and the US has a higher OS X percentage than most of the world.

I have to use a Mac for one of my Media lessons, and (bias as a Windows user) I have to say some of the application design choices (e.g Pages) are really wierd. I hate the toolbar thing at the top where every app uses it as a saving thing (that I used anyway). Overall they feel very clunky and am glad that my other two media lessons use Windows computers. I definitely think they ar not worth the price.

The study lounge is always full of them, because they don't actually go to class because they're too busy showing off their Mac :P

In-class the percentage of macs I see drops down significantly... Of course that could be due to my classes being in the science areas instead of the icky arts buildings :P

Yeah I tend to stay away from the liberal arts majors and their hipster ideologies. :P Most engineers I know don't have macs.

They already have problems getting the game to get along with three different systems, adding a fourth which is an even tinier portion of the market is not a good idea.

Agree.

Don't underestimate Mac machines. I'm in the IT business myself, fixing PCs and software problems. During the years I've been working at this company, I've never had to fix a Mac.

My school uses nothing but macs (we're an art hipster university, what can I say) and I break a mac at least once a month. Sometimes multiple times a day. Freezes, crashes, random performance issues...

Really funny seeing the really biased view on Macs in here :P

I know a significant amount of people with Macs, probably at about 30%. But then I am a computer science student and from my perspective Macs look really nice. I would probably buy if I had money and wanted a laptop. Sure you pay a premium but it has nice hardware, nice software and it works.

What I've learned from this thread:

Mac users = 'hipsters'

PC users = the kind of guys that come to a thread asking a legitimate question to grief and troll.

I'd love to have one myself just to play around with it, as I've never tried OS X.

Why is it that Apple has OS X so that (barring the (illegal?) Hackintosh route) only Macs can run it? Is just to make more money by making people who want OS X also have to pay for the hardware as well?

Yes. They say it's for compatibility reasons or something, though.

A nicer way to put it would be that they want to ensure that there software doesn't have hardware issues.

For all my Microsoft-bashing, they must have a hell of a time dealing with all the third-party driver issues. OS X is relatively free from that issue because Apple closed the hardware platform, but they get bashed for it, so it's swings and roundabouts...

They don't deal with third-party driver issues. They publish how to make drivers, and then hardware manufactures can choose to pay a fee after which they can sign their own drivers (otherwise they can pay someone else to sign them).

The only time driver issues actually affected Microsoft directly was with Vista, due to changing the driver model, they shipped an OS without good peripheral support which lead to poor sales of Windows Vista and hurt MS's bottom line. Other than that it isn't MS's responsibility to deal with drivers (beyond the ones they release).

There's quite a difference here, since MS sells the OS at quite a high price-point: they are a software vendor. Apple doesn't make much cash off the OS, they seem use the OS to drive hardware sales. MS is not making hardware sales off windows, with the exception of keyboards etc. Because Apple is effectively a PC manufacturer with a unique OS, the hardware is the product.

Yes. They say it's for compatibility reasons or something, though.

Not completely. You can buy Mac compatible parts without any problem. They just do not sell an OS...

Macs are good for art and visual design hands down, but they are not good for gaming as it conflicts with the standard left-right clicking that gamesas and every major gaming company has come to use and even physically need for standard gameplay.

also, more of a Mac-Bashing joke, bit I think it is funny: So, i heard you liked macs, so I made your car have one pedal.

Erm... there is no left-right clicking conflict. Mac OS X is perfectly happy supporting multiple mouse buttons.

i don't agree, being a developer for almost 12 years, i fail to see where they're pretty and stupid and i've been working and living on mac's (Imac and currently a MBP) for 3 years, can you explain why do you think that? Most of the arguments i read don't hold any common sense ground and mostly end up being pure hate/disdain or the fact that the machines are expensive.

Before buying the iMac, had an Acer laptop and worked and lived on Linux for more than 7 years. Being a UNIX based O.S. fan i feel quite at home using it. Actually, in my opinion, my overall user experience has actually increased, there's great software on OSX.

And you're perfectly entitled to your opinion, as I am mine. You've had good experiences with Macs, which is fair enough...I, on the other hand, have not. I worked at a private girls school (ages 11-18) where the kids (and, more importantly, their parents) had more money than sense...and guess what? Around 80% of them had Macs, and none of them knew a thing about IT...they bought them based on the fact that they 'looked nice' and were apparently 'the only way to do Photoshop'...so misinformed, and terrible reasons to buy a laptop that's intended to further their education. Working on them, as we had to, was a nightmare. In all fairness, a lot of that was due to us having a strong knowledge of Windows and little-to-no knowledge of OSX. But it just didn't feel nice, and compatibility with certain programs and network features we had was a pain in the rear.

Don't worry about...it's kinda evident it's mostly motivated by hate with just the fact that they are bashing Macs in general when I asked a question about game development for macs. They use the same old arguments and the same failed logic. "hey guys look it's a post with Mac in the title! Let's go trollin!"

First off, don't call me or anyone else in here a troll...A: It's against forum rules, and B: It makes you like like an idiot.

I was merely giving my opinion, something which I've been doing for 3 years here...nobody else has had a problem with it, so why should you? If you don't agree, fair enough...but opinions are like armpits - everybody has them, and sometimes they stink. Deal with it!
