Why no One Handed Hammers?

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:27 pm

I am curious, why no one handed Hammers were added to the game? I mean they would be a common and easy to get weapon, heck every blacksmith has one. They are a traditional weapon from the time period.

I was thinking that today. A mace is ok i guess, but a hammer would be more fun to use.

I think the mace is intended to fill the "one handed non-bladed weapon" slot.

I think it would be a nice little addition to the asthetic selection of the game.

You're probably right. It's quite disappointing how little variety of weapons there is in Skyrim.
One- and two-handed blade.
One- and two-handed axe.
One- and two-handed blunt weapon.
Dagger (for assassins).
Bow.

That's all. They restricted their weapons to the minimum. No idea why, you should ask Bethesda, not us.

Personally, I'd love to see flails in the game.

Apart from Sunder in Morrowind, Elder Scrolls games have never really had one handed hammers as weapons.

I would rather have more variety within weapon types than more weapon types. It irks me that, in vanilla, all iron swords look the same.

I have enough trouble choosing between the weapons that are already available, lol, so I have no complaints. I've modded in the ability to make them from some different materials, but no additional weapon types. I do prefer the hammer to the mace, though, so if I go with a blunt instrument it's gonna be the two-hander. But that's only because I think it looks cooler. So I can understand why someone who likes the look or idea of the hammer but prefers 1H weapons might want that option.

Mods man.. Mods.

Absolutely, Crafting 300, JaySuS, the WVE, all great stuff. However, I would prefer the vanilla to be better from the start so mods could be further ahead to begin with.

Maces were probably an evolution of the hammer as a weapon.

While a hammer is common enough, as a weapon it is not that effective. It does not have enough weight to go against armor, nor does it have enough reach. Maces don't have reach either, but they have much more kinetic energy due to their weight.

More the other way around. The war hammer evolved to defeat plate mail. It was a late medieval development.

The war hammer is much different than the smith's tool. It is lighter, has a blunt end on one side and a pointy pick on the other. It is the pointed pick that is interesting, as it allows the full focus of the blow to be concentrated in a small spot. The blunt side is pretty much the same as a mace.

Skyrim doesn't really do weapon effectiveness vs. armor type so it doesn't really matter that much from a general game play PoV. It becomes more of a variety/role play thing ... which is why mods are a good thing .

Also, don't confuse a Skyrim mace with a real mace. A real mace had a head about the size of a fist, not a bowling ball. Real weapons were light and fast. Fantasy stuff is double to triple to 10x the size of a real weapon. You don't need to swing a 10 lb thing to split somebody's head open. 1.5 lbs of steel is quite enough. Anything more is dead weight for little value.

Yeah I was a bit disappointed that short swords had been removed. I liked equipping them when I was in a town or city (to say I'm friendly but I can quite easily gut you if you cross me) where I tend to wear clothes rather than armor.

I know it's not a hammer but you can use your pick axe as a weapon.

Not really. The mace is more of an evolution of the club. Hammers were distinctly different. They focused the force of their impact through the hammer head. They also had often had a spike on the back side that could be used to puncture armor. Hammers, as well as maces, were often used in the late middle ages against plate armor, against which they were rather effective.

I've been on one character for over 200 hours on Skyrim, and I've just found a hammer. Just a Blacksmith one. I took it, but it didn't occur to me whether I could use is as a weapon. Probably only deal a few points of damage though, like a Pickaxe. No reason why there couldn't be a Mjollnir-type weapon, (though obviously not like the one from the recent Marvel films!)

I would certainly have a hammer enchanted with shock damage and then name the hammer Mjolnir.

I strongly support this idea. And please bethesda, have one type of hammer, or a special hammer, that resembles Mjolnir (Thor's hammer, as in my avatar pic) in the appearance. That would be awesome!!!

The warhammer and the one handed hammer ended up being great weapons of use. The biggest reason was steal armor. A good steal aromor could stop a slashing weapon cold and gave swords fits, A piercing weapon like a spear worked but you need a lot of force behind it to really do much damage. The Hammer however by passed the defenses. The pure brute force impact of the hammer was felt through ANY armor and had a stunning effect on it's foes. Even full plate was vulnerable to the crushing damage and further vulnerable because the blows could acutally bend the plate armor and thus constrict movement or breathing. Additionally the hammer was much easier to create than swords or axes as no sharpening was required. This also mean the hammer was more durable and required less maintenance.

As for Thor, PLEASE!!!! NO!!!! The concept of the throwing hammer was a pure fantasy creation. While the hammer could be thrown it was fairly heavy and not a weapon that was typically caredin bulk. The idea of the thrown hammer is like the idea of a thrown sword. It might work but it was a last act of desperation.

I don't think anybody suggested that it would be a throwing hammer as far as I could tell, just a one handed hammer that looks like it...
