It started with (atleast in the US) the settlers where originally a very conservitive and relegiously minded people so six is still a "taboo" subject to this day.
This is a sweeping generalization that isn't necessarily true all the time. The puritans weren't as... puritanical, as people think. Comparatively to modern society they were pretty reserved, but hardcoe English Bible thumpers weren't the only people who settled the areas that are now known as the United States. Quakers were pretty liberal thinkers for their day. You had plenty of people who fled to the colonies to escape issues they had, had in their native countries... just as you did in many English Colonies.
Arguably the "six as a Taboo Subject" Is newer to our culture than people choose to recognize... look more to the 30s and 50s for times in which you should blame for the prudish approach the average american has towards six as a topic. It could be said it was as an objection to the decadence of the 20's and the subsequent financial collapse that era caused.
