Why is Skyrim so spartan?

I agree with the OP. The new system is simple enough to work, but offers no depth.

I think that the simplicity of basic stats and leveling meshes well with the impressive array of abilities and perks available, and the items you can acquire, deconstruct, and combine. You can create a dizzying variety of character types, but without unnecessary complexity.

And if you do want a Spartan-looking character, just go with the right boots, helmet, and handwear, and no armor, and a sword and shield. You'll look like a refugee from "300". And whenever you charge into battle, you can yell: "Tonight we dine in Oblivion!"

Can we dine at pizza hut instead? I mean oblivion sounds cool and all but I'm not that into BBQ

Wow.. Far too many people in this thread don't tknow that Spartan means more than one thing.. I don't know whether to be surprised, or disappointed.

Edit: Nevermind someone already defined it.

I have no idea why the guys and gals who made this game decided to remove all of the statistical systems they had in place and make the game the way they did.
Money. Lots of money.
Dumbed down to the lowest possible denominator to appeal to as many people as possible to sell as many copies as possible.

Unfortunately for those of us who actually enjoy a rich experience that challenges your mind, Bethesda seems to have been successful in their approach.

When you said Spartan, I thought you were complaining about lack of pants on some armors in Skyrim.

Did you really make a whole 6 paragraph post on the term spartan applied and it's relation to skyrim?

I've never heard the word Spartan used in this context before.

It was the original meaning of the term 'spartan' as an adjective (not as a noun) before the movie 300 glorified spartans to an unrealistically badass level. Basically, because spartans are so tough, they make soldiers live on very little, thus, spartan is a synonem for minimalistic.

Maybe it would be a smart idea to do 'skill nets' where for every 4 level ups in one handed you get one level up in two handed automatically. because technique can translate a little, but in reality training with one wont actually teach you how to use the other. Swords are designed with certain things in mind, using a sharp blade like elven short sword would be massively different to using a 'blunt' blade like a steel claymore. and using one handed weapons is completely different from using two handed ones IRL.

The "Skyrim made progressing better because it removed redundant stat points" argument is, well, redundant.

There's no reason they couldn't have used stats & perks rather than just perks. Granted it would have been nice if they could have worked on an alternative to the +5 skill system from Morrowind & Oblivion, but even that was much better than no stats at all.

Yes, the current perk system provides many ways to build your characters, but why not have stats as well and increase those possibilities exponentially?

Customisation doesn't have to be frightening, Bethesda could just include a " apply stats to recommended attributes" button to increase your stats based on your class...? Oh yeah, thats something else they removed isn't it?

Sigh.

Says something about Skyrim, says something about it's fanbase, says something about the gaming industry, says something about the direction we're all headed.

I thought it was just a comedy. I don't know about you, but I was laughing at it the whole way through.

I'm aghast that so many people don't understand the OP's usage of "spartan". Before Hollywood and "300" there used to be actual ancient Sparta and spartan lifestyle, you know: simple, harsh life of young warriors with no comforts and a lot of sacrifices. So sad that everybody thinks only of "kicking people down wells"... :/

Anyway, I agree with the OP.

Ever read Persian Fire? It's a fantastic book, covers the rise of the Persian empire, how Greece came to be in the state it was in and what they did to antagonise the Persians enough kick off that whole conflict.
