why the player characters don't have voice?

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 5:39 pm

Plus people are roleplaying and want to imagine either their own voice or a voice that fits their character.
Yeah, I think that's the main thing. I'd be kinda peeved if I made an erudite Khajiit scholar whose default voice ended up making him sound like a sleazy car salesman or had a happy-go-lucky, humble Altmer who was voiced by a generic pompous jerk. There's no way a single stereotyped voice could fit the bill, and the alternative of having something like six different kinds of voices, one set each for female and male toons, would result in needing about 12 different voice-actors per race. Talk about an unnecessary headache.

it would help the game immersion to hear my own voice.

It would break Immersion for me to hear someone else's voice saying things I don't want to say in any given situation.

Besides, there is not a voice actor out there that can say "Die you scum svcking pig" the same way I can.

This. I know my Bosmer's voice. I can deal with the shouts, but I don't want someone else voicing my character (at least in Skyrim).

I would prefer to have a voice for any race and gender, but I would happily accept 2 voices only (one for male and one for female characters, to save costs and disk space) rather then having a character without voice... but apparently it's only me

I certainly hope it is only you. It would be terrible to play as an Argonian and hear a humanoid speak. Only acceptible way to do it is to have 20 different voice actors but that leads to a bunch of other problems. Not to mention most players don't want VA's.

I've occasionally wished my characters would actually speak their responses, but overall it's better that they don't because the voices I 'hear' them speaking in in my head are very different than the ones their race (Argonians) actually uses in-game. In fact, I don't particularly like their in-game voices, because they don't actually sound saurian (heavy yet quiet rasp, basically) like they really ought to.

Now, if the VA did a good job of it then I wouldn't mind as much, however it still wouldn't really work in TES due to the character being a blank slate rather than a (at least partially) predefined individual. What would be interesting would be the option to record our own voices for use by the character, but I have no idea how they'd actually work that in since .lip files are mapped to particular voice files and therefore require that they be recorded ahead of time.

In the future probably there will be the opportunity to record our own voice for the main character.

Until then Bethesda's current choice its understandable -at least partially.

I'm like very many people here, I imagine my characters voice for myself. To have voice acting would ruin the experience for me. My character would be ruined and my vision ruined. Rashir Nashida is my main character, he's a dark elf night assassin. But I always imagined him with an interesting mixture of Nordic and Dunmer in his voice. His father was from Skyrim and his mother from Morrowind. His father sent for the teenage boys[he has an older brother] to come to Skyrim to uncover a family heirloom. Being stuck and influenced in Skyrim at an early age I feel would have given Rashir an interesting way of speaking.

Something voice acting could not provide.

I'm all for player voice, as long as it can be toggled and dialogue speed is affected. But I guess Beth doesn't allow us such choices (not the masters of toggles ;)), so in that case I'm better off without them.

I hope they add player voices when the disk space and the budget are good. Mute character was excusable while it lasted.

Ironically, the most immersive games for me are the ones with silent protagonists and narrators. A narrator wouldn't fit in TES though, since the story is set up through set pieces and interaction instead of being presented directly through cut scenes or chapters.

Why in Nirn would I want to do that?

It is not a matter of budget, it's the superiority of silent protagonist for first person roleplay. That is not something that is ever going to change.

That's probably because of the Rabies....

Something I wouldn't want to be required. A Khajiit with my voice? What a strange combination.

Because you're playing the role of the main character.. what sense would it make to have someone voice it for you?

People like to play how they want to, making the player speak is "putting words in the mouths" of the players and they don't want that.

No, it's because there would be people who hate the voices, and they could only have a select amount of voice options.

Indeed, and it'd be impossible to fill out the BIG f [censored] BLANK with some of the dialogue options that don't fit your character at all.

I'm fine with the idea of a player voice, as long as I can turn it off.

Soon there will be nothing in video games that requires us to use our imaginations anymore.

Not possible. The goal of Skyrim is to create your own character and see the world through him. Voice is one of those stuff that clearly defines a character, and it greatly limits your imagination

This! One of the things that really bugs me about Two Worlds (both I and II) is that I keep hearing some guys voice and it is supposed to be mine but the guy sounds like a dweeb and nothing like what I imagine my voice to sound like. I think it is a really bad idea to hire voice actors to play the PC.

If I want to hear my character speak with my voice, I can already have it - I'll just speak whenever my char is supposed to say something. Who cares if my flatmates think I'm crazy? :P

However, most of the time it would be even worse than VA. A glaring example: I'm playing a male. How on Nirn am I supposed to voice a male?
