why the player characters don't have voice?

I hope they add player voices when the disk space and the budget are good. Mute character was excusable while it lasted.

they have enough disk space and the budget could easily be worked to include this feature, thank god they didnt add it though, VA for the protaganist that YOU are supposed to be making would be a horrible idea (i know for a fact they would not get my friendly argonian assassin right because there would be no choice for a friendly killer, only a dike or a friendly brat)

I don't mind games that have Voiced Main Characters but only if the VA is good and the character itself is more of a preset character like Geralt or Commander Shepard (Female since Meer is robotic). For a game like Skyrim that allows you to create your own story, Voiced character would go against everything that you can do with Roleplaying and everything that the game stands for. Better to have that extra memory go towards more content.

Besides, there is not a voice actor out there that can say "Die you scum svcking pig" the same way I can.

Wes Johnson could. :biggrin:

Wouldn't it be annoying if you selected somehting like "Let's go over here" and then you heard a voice saying "hey, let's go over here." Wouldn't taht get really redundent over a while, because it would be the same dialoug twice. MAss effect convo wheel and heavy rain were the only two systems to get this right.
Well, yah... the VA wouldn't be verbatim what the rather limited sentences are that show up as your options. That would be the right way to do it, however... see below :tongue:

^Because of this lol. That's a LOT of recording. A lot doesn't even begin to cover it. Take ALL the dialogue in ES:V and multiply it by at least 21, that's at least how much it would be.

On the contrary it makes the story more involving.... so long as it's done RIGHT.... which means not only having male/female of EACH race reading every single different line, but having different contextual changes to the lines as well exponentially increasing the VA even more
Too much memory, would destroy the series if implemented and Skyrim is a 1st person narrative type RPG. Voice over would work in a 3rd person narrative type RPG like Witcher or Mass Effect but not in the elder scrolls.
How does view perspective change how VA affects gameplay?


You know what might make it more immersive? if you could pick what you say by... SAYING IT! How's that for immersion? you hear yourself speak the words and the game responds. Too bad they are neither including that into the Kinect patch upgrade nor would I be able to use it if it did.

I hate kinect and refuse to support it (360 gamer) :tongue: There are software voice recognition solutions out there though that they could take any mic input and parse it through to add this (and dragon shouts as well) to ALL platforms. I was upset when I found out ME3 was adding voice support for kinect only and now this. FFS GTFO of here with your greedy exclusive BS Micro$oft and stop trying to shove your worthless pos accessories down my throat. Voice recognition has been around for YEARS and now suddenly M$ has got exclusive rights to it? WTF?!?

I understand why.... it's easier and cheaper on the developers to use kinect as it handles the voice to text itself with no cost to the developer (licensing those voice recognition programs can be pricey) but cmon... Look at the kinect's target audience and look at YOUR target audience and just how much use will it really get? Not to mention limiting yourself to 1 of 3 platforms. The only legitimate reason I see is the kinect offloads the processing of voice translation so they don't need to share CPU power with it.

But I digress. IMO lacking the speak to answer option I think that having VA would make the story telling more immersive, however due to the sheer # of choices you have in character development, it would either be too generic, or take way too long (understatement of the year right there) to record and process all the dialogue.

New Vegas proved that you can tell an excellent, invoking story and the main character can be a silent Protagonist.

As much as people here freak out at the writing "putting words in my characters mouth" can you even imagine the storm of bawling that an actual voiced PC would cause? it'd be a bigger can of worms than fast travel, quest markers, and perks combined.

Giving the player-characrer a voice would quite possibly be the single worst things they could possibly do to the TES series.

As far as no-no's go, I'd rate it as high up as making the gameworld linear.

My characters speak all the time. Whenever I want to hear from them, I open my mouth and speak. But then I just end up being a creepy guy sitting in his room by himself, talking to a video game....
But boy, have I had some good times with Oblivion's Adoring Fan and (what I like to call) my "Over-the-Top Cheesy Adventurer Voice." I also enjoy playing as a Khajiit because it gives me an excuse to do my Khajiit Voice. I've been working on my Dunmer Growl as of late, too. :biggrin:

Like said it's better for the player character to be unvoiced. This way everyone can imagine themselves what exactly their character says and with what kind of voice.

In Oblivion there was a fun mod where you could choose from few voices. It was pretty fun. Hopefully Skyrim gets a mod like that too.

I'm one of those people. I like faceless heros because they look just the way I like. Link, Samus, they have (had) the personalities that I, the player, imagined them to have. In my eyes, Link was a mischievous treasure hunter who's only goal was to claim the treasure for his own. If they gave him a voice or a personality, that would most likely disappear. "Well excuuuuuuse me, princess."
Giving the player a voicactor changes that. It's not what he says, but how he says it. Shouts are fine because, well, they're shouts. It's hard to screw up a victorious shout.
In my opinion, Mass Effect does this the best, but I still can't necessarily create my ideal character with my ideal attitude. It's an unrealistic expectation, which is why I'm glad Bioware pulled it off so well...in a videogame. That doesn't happen everyday.
