Why no Varla Stones?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 3:54 am

I wish we could have seen more into Aylied society just not the way it was in Oblivion those things was massive torcher chambers where nobody could reasonably live, I wish they seemed more liveable like the Dwemer ruins of Morrowind and Skyrim.

Just had to ramble a little there.

It's been said here that the Aylieds just did not settle in the North that is why there is no ruins here. It would make sense that some artifacts was around somewhere tho. Maybe from smuggling.

In Oblivion we got gates moreso than ruins. And they were basically the same color as Oblivion (the place) and the dremora as well; your typical 'ooh evil!' black and red, volcanic hell sort of theme.

Tbh Oblivion realms were a bit disappointing. It only looked hell-ish because of the lava and scorched corpses here and there, most of the towers and spikes sticking out looked alien-like, and like they are made from silver metal/steel.

The Deadlands could have been so much better but as they was they were a copy pasted disaster. If they was more unique and varied I would have dreaded going into that next gate, repetition chewed my bones until I just rushed threw my two hundredth gate just to get my Sigal stones and Dremora gear.

A better question might be, why is there nothing in Skyrim that's similar in functionality to a varla stone?

Or how about introducing mage enchanters as a basic service in Skyrim? Perhaps add it as another duty to the court wizards in each of the Jarl's palace? Or am I making too much sense with this?

I don't know about you, but the old system of NPC enchantment recharging services worked pretty well for my non-enchanting characters in the other two ES titles I've played. For the life of me, I can't understand the reasoning behind Bethesda's decision to place enchanting in the player's hands alone.

Actually it is not really needed as soul gems are simply too plentiful.

In fact, I rather they go back to Morrowind's soul gem where each gem costs a bomb and artifacts regenerate their charges. Finding a grand/black soul gem was a big deal, now it is just another to add to my 500 others.

Some of the posts boggle my mind in this thread, lol.

The soul gems are plentiful in Skyrim because the natural source of them is in Skyrim (well, one of them). If you've done the main quest, you've been there.

Welkynd and Varla stones are essentially Ayleid batteries. They're a way of transporting energy/magika. The Varla stones used to power Ayleid cities or at least aid in that function (IIRC there were larger stones again that were the primary power source).

The Dwemer use soul gems in a similar manner, they're used to power their automatons. Though how they do this is still unknown.

The Falmer, well, there is no evidence the Falmer ever had any complex or developed society. For all we know they were savages similar to the Forsworn. Perhaps even more so.

Yeppers. no real need for varla or welkynd equivalents. soul gems can be mined and soulgems are plentiful loot from dwemer automatons.
That and theres the perks that can make soul trapping and enchant recharging easier.

I actually have never soul trapped anything in the game after 200 hrs and yet i have an abundance of filled soulgems.

For me, its not about the need for them at all. I have loads of charged soul gems. I like finding the rare items in these games. I remembered these varla stones from Oblivion so I thought id ask. It brought up an entertaining discussion if you ask me, and I learned a little about lore.

Exactly. There were like 3-4 variations, and that's it. After 1st 10 closed gates I realized I'm just rushing in and finding the quickest way to the sigil stone, trying to reduce the time "wasted" on exploring the place.

That's fine, but it makes absolutely no sense for there to be Varla stones in Skyrim.

What there should be, are more unique items based on the Nordic or Dwemeri cultures. Unique or useful items.

There really should be more unique items in Skyrim. My skingrad house in Oblivion has all sorts of odd named booty on the shevles, desks and in the display cases. Nothing like finding "mothers head", or "wedding gift" and for some reason I liked clothes that were labeled with the characters name.
The best of Skyrim so far are probably the Daedric items and maybe those torture tools I found.
