WHY were the raspy Dunmer voice taken out... AGAIN?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:45 pm

Title says it all, really.

I loved the Morrowind Dunmer voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG8OjKiGAvE
It fit so perfectly with how the Dunmer looked and it add a really unique feeling to their race.

This was how it sounded before it was taken out in Skyrim: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zBAmRXJjpOo#t=102s
This is how it sounds now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=EAM0HDovkZE#t=217s

I'm very disappointed and feel betrayed. I was really looking forward to have the Morrowind Dunmer voice actor again in Skyrim. I know things can change during development, but this exact same thing happened for Oblivion, and with zero word from Bethesda. Wtf? I ask for Bethesda to simply come forth and say why this was removed, please.

According to the game credits, Jeff Baker wasn't even hired this time around.

I'm pretty sure that was placeholder dialogue. Before the final stuff is recorded they may test out some sections with stuff recorded in-house. When I beta-tested Tribunal the version they initially sent out was technically the last alpha version as the professionally done dialogue hadn't been finished yet. It was all done by one person, in one cases he couldn't pronounce the person's name and after several tries just spelled it out, and everything had been sped up slightly so they were a bit squeaky.

Obviously this wasn't intendedt to be heard outside the office - the stuff in the videos needed to be higher quality.

While gravely the voice in that video doesn't sound like Jeff Baker to me.

Really? But it's him there! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=zBAmRXJjpOo#t=102s
Anyone who has heard his previous work can tell that's him.

It's just like it was with Oblivion. They show off the great Dunmer voice in official gameplay videos. Then when the game is actually done... *poof* they're gone and not a single word about it.

I wanna know why...

I'm pretty sure that was placeholder dialogue.
I don't think so. And the reason of that is because Bethesda have to know that a lot of people really love the Dunmer voice from Morrowind. They can't have missed that as developers, especially not after Oblivion and how much discussion there have been about it. And in Fallout 3, Jeff Baker did the ghoul voices... and they stayed in the released game.

Yeah it's him and it's a great loss indeed. No idea why they didn't hire him for the full game, he's a great voice actor and THE real voice of the Dunmers. Very disappointing.

Oblivion had raspy dunmer voices before final release as well. Either Bethesda has a really raspy talker or good dunmer impressionist at the office
or they are hiring/firing Jeff Baker like there is no tommorow. In any case, Bethesda stop removing that brilliant raspy voice! it fits the dunmer so well.

Amazing how much better it sounds now as opposed to the IMSOEVIL voice.

They did the right call on that one.

My first impression was that it is someone faking a Dunmer voice. It sounds better while he is running away, but intially? I wouldn't bet on it being Jeff Baker.

Have to agree with this one, for me the voice just doesn't fit. Morrowind had it perfect.

perhaps there was a disagreement between the Voice Actor and Bethesda, forcing Beth to have to get someone else. I do find Skyrim's Dunmer Accents kinda funny, I expect them to say: G'day Mate.

The raspy voices of oblivion and skyrim's demo's were crap .

Morrowind (and that one guy from redguard) were brilliant. Maybe lower quality recordings make the voices sound better? (if it's the same guy)

Hmm, having watched those sample videos, I don't really see the attraction. Yes, it's more distinct than the later voices. But I don't hear anything special. Sorry. :(

Kieth Sjarba....sarja.... :banghead: Joshua Graham's voice actor is a great Dunmer voice actor IMO. It's husky and deep, but doesn't sound like he's coughing a lung up like the dark elves in MW do.

I for one am glad that the Dunmer are no longer a race of chainsmokers. I'm also glad that Craig Sechler isn't doing them anymore like in Oblivion. He was okay for wood elves and maybe high elves, but as dark elves.... No.

Oblivion voice < Skyrim demo voice < Skyrim final version voice < Morrowind voice.
This pretty much sums it all up.

At least the female voices are nice, even if I expect to see a giant, white-haired, leather-clad dominatrix with a chain-sword behind me sometimes.

I think they add the raspy voice in the gameplay previews and remove it in the full game to make the Morrowind fans mad.

This was a disappointment for me as well, especially because I had come to expect the raspy voice when I ran Bleak Falls for the first time. I'm not sure I'd be as bothered had I not been introduced to the scratched voice in the summer demo videos. Alpha build, beta build, or not, one doesn't typically expect something like voice over work to get changed before release--it's one of the more time consuming bits of work on a project.

What I think bothers me most, though, is that if the raspy voice was in-house, why the voice over directors didn't coach the voice actors to use the same voice. Clearly the team believes that that's what the Dunmer should sound like. Why would they then accept something wholly different?

The guy who did the demo voice was not Jeff Baker. It sounds like someone imitating him, but it's clearly not him.
