Why would Microsoft care about making the DLC exclusive to X

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:20 pm

I am curious why would Microsoft pay so much money to Bethesda for DLC exclusivity? Games can influence people to choose to buy one console over the other, but not DLC. People won't throw out their PS3 and buy an Xbox for DLC.
So I am wondering why would Microsoft care about buying the exclusivity rights for the DLC? How do they benefit? Do they even benefit, or is it just a way for them to flaunt how much money they have?

I can see why they wouldnt want it to be on the ps3,but how does having the dlc on the pc lose them any money considering it requires windows to play it!

Because it's outside the X360 walled garden.

Why did Apple snub their noses at Adobe?

Why does Mr. House get casually homicidal when confronted with someone outside his plans?

Some people have more than just one system they play games on so seeing as the Xbox has a DLC that isn't available to other gaming systems they may purchase Microsoft points to purchase the DLC. Though I find it completely stupid but possible someone could get an Xbox not just over Dead Money but other exclusive DLC that the Xbox has.

When I originally bought an Xbox 360, I did it because of exclusive DLC for a couple of games I wanted at the time (and as it turns out, recently as well). I bought the 360 specifically because I knew I would be getting some exclusive (timed or otherwise) content.

If I had chosen a PS3, I would still be playing Fallout, but I would just deal with the lack of DLC for it. I know this because I deal with it already with other games and content.

For example: Assassin's Creed Brotherhood has DLC exclusive to the PS3. I want it. Badly. Very, very badly. But I deal with the fact that I just can't have it. I don't go the forums and complain and moan and beg and threaten and insult. I just deal with it. And I move on with my life.

There are a crap-ton of mods I would love to have for the PC version, but my PC won't run F:NV so I don't get the mods. You know what I do? That's right: I deal with it.

They're also probably hoping to get the next Fallout game on GFWL for PC.

I would like to take this moment to send out a message to Microsoft in general.

"Steam rocks .........s!" Fill the blanks as your heart desires.

Probably for the one over against competition. Some fan boys do get annoyed at it.

I believe they also make money off everything downloaded through Xbox Live, which is why they won't put a browser on the Xbox!

One friend of mine has a PS3 and an Xbox 360. He was going to buy the game for the PS3, but when I told him that for the Xbox there is an exclusive DLC, he bought the game for that console.

That's why.

I have a Playstation 3 and a Xbox 360.
So, Microsoft's marketing tactics have effect on me.

Maybe because Microsoft is full of money and feel like they owe people for charging them to pay online even though we have a freaking internet connection. p.s. they don't care they want more money
Maybe because most FNV console users have a 360
Maybe because we console users just got lucky. mine is 9

Yea but you own both consoles. You did not buy a 360 just for the DLC. You may have bought NV for the 360 but that does not benefit Microsoft since you already own the console and already pay an online subscription.
My point is if somebody is deciding what console to buy DLC probably would not play a part.

And that is where you're wrong. Knowing which platform gets DLC does play a part in a lot of people's purchase decisions

I don't see why it would. I haven't played consoles since PS2 and Xbox days but when I chose which console to get I could care less about DLC (it didn't even occur to me to factor it into my choice).
And I specifically do not see why there is not DLC for PC becasue the game requires WINDOWS to play so I don't get why Microsoft won't let them put it on PC.

It probably does boost sales a bit. Most of all though I think it's because in the long run they get more money because of the microsoft point system. You have to pay for points you don't use right away.. but they get all the money right away. If it was also on PS3 then people who have both systems might spend that money on the other system. This way guarantees first crack at sales. By leaving it off the pc it also gives them the chance to actually make sales instead of having to worry so much about piracy.

yes, but I was deciding which version of FO NV I wanted to buy, and remembered that the 360 got the DLC for FO 3 first, so I bought the 360 version. So Microsoft won a customer, not because the console was better, they kinda bribed me ;P

Regardless of the perceived quality of the DLC, regardless of the reason, the exclusivity of it has clearly been perceived as a snub to non-360 owners. I'm sure people in positions of authority considered the effect of alienating a significant portion of their intended market against the giant pile of money being thrown at them. Will we despise them for selling out to their Gatesian masters? Probably. Will we surrender to their charms, and return to the flock once the DLC is released to the rest of us? Most assuredly. Do they understand the depth of the folly in keeping any particular DLC exclusive to 360? Only an idiot wouldn't.

I do, however, wonder about the idea of releasing individual DLC exclusive to individual consoles...

I'm guessing that MS strikes these deals for their customers. Get new ones; keep the existing ones hooked. Yup, it leads to the bottom line but one of the many facts of life is that *everything* is about the bottom line.

I, for one, am a fan. Why? Because of (timed) exclusive DLC like Dead Money.

I guess I must not be a professional because I game on a console. :eyeroll:

*cough* Might want to add not strong in logic to your list. You heard of windows right? The operating system new vegas pc users use? So you might want to say they are catering to some of their customers, while ignoring others.

edit: Also, you say your a fan of the practice, why? Unless your just trying to be annoy others, you do realize they didn't actually pay to create new content exclusive for the 360, they paid to withhold it from other platforms.
