[WIPz] Wilder Wasteland

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 11:15 pm

Ever since I first used the Wild Wasteland trait, I was disappointed. The encounters were funny, but they were so scarce. I saw a topic a while back with loads of people complaining about this, so I thought I'd solve the issue.

What I want wild wasteland to be is a mixture of the small encounters you get in vanilla, mixed with a few repeatable, random encounters. Nothing utterly game changing, and certainly not anything that makes the trait a hindered to everyday gameplay, but just something that spruces up the game compared to the lacking vanilla trait.

I started by making finding Wild Wasteland encounters a challenge. It just gives you a bit of a counter, and an incentive to find some more. If you find all encounters, you gain a perk. This and the challenge is fully implemented, the perk doesn't have any advantages as of yet, think of it as more of a trophy.

What I'd love is anything you'd like to add to this trait. If you can think of new features, different types of encounters, and even suggest encounters to be used in the mod, that would be awesome. Remember if the encounter you suggest is a reference to something, like a movie, if you could give me a bit of background information that would be appreciated :)

I'm looking forward to developing this further. Should be fun.

Alien abduction? Very small chance that when you sleep you get abducted by aliens. Fight your way to a teleporter to get back.

Comic-con. Use some of those outlandish costumes and weapons on some nerds. Then unleash some carnage. 10 oddly dressed folks with odd weapons vs a deathclaw. I'd sit back and have some popcorn. Of course you'd need to get permissions to use the new items.

I'd say go over that thread again and pick a few out which you think are doable and which you think could be appropriate.
Some references to other Post-Apocalyptic stories seems like a nice thing and quite a few humorous ones seems like a must.

As for the perk, might be nice to add something zany to it. Though you run the risk of it becoming annoying if it's something that keeps happening.

I'm of to bed, but I'll see if I can find a few things. I'm glad you decided to do this.

EDIT: Two or three people arguing over whether Fallout NV is better than 3 or who would win in a fight (Frank Horrigan or Liberty Prime) :whistling:

Have the *real* King appear. Plenty of conspiracy theorists are convinced Elvis never died. Maybe he is a ghoul, or the aliens abducted him to preserve his life.

In a bar have a skeleton or pile of ash with the name of "Hon" and have the message say "Looks like he didn't fire first..."

Another with an apartment with holotapes, each with the name of "Patrick's porm" or "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and some skeletons in a bathtub, closet, bed, and one on the bottom of some steps.

If you didn't get these references, I am sad.

Also, look in the Fallout 1/2 easter egg section and put some of those in the wasteland. Like the Holy Hand Grenade encounter.

Maybe change some creature/NPC enemies into ones that are pop culture references like some b-movie monster types. Also more items that are references, like Indy's hat is in vanilla. I'll try and think of some ideas.

Or a dead woman with giant rat corpse next to her.

Spoiler

The book is so much better than the film.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1154353-wild-wasteland/

I'd say replacing certain uniques with silly version (a rubber chicken or a mackerel as melee weapon).

Here's a few from the thread.

- Odd ring. Strange inscriptions. Gives you a stealth field whenever you put it on, but gives bad karma and you are hunted by hooded men on brahmins with longswords.
- epic enemy: "Rabbit of Caerbannog". Requires a "holy handgrenade" to kill.
- Wanamingos (WW can defy canon)
- Inside Vault 22, you witness a conversation through a window between a spore-plant and his caretaker. "Feed me, Seymour, feed me!"
- You come across a Mr. Handy Robot in a bunker like the ones under the radio towers in fallout. Mr. Handy is conver in blood trying it's very best to put back together a group of humans he killed by mistake, trying to get them to "Work" again. He Asks you if you have any "spare parts" he can use to help fix them. Comes after you with his buzz saws!. Kill or be killed.
- You find a body with a cowboy hat and a poncho with a plate of steel sticking out just a bit. A bullet hole is found where his eye is supposed to be. (armor can be looted?)

Also a Terminator reference in the New Vegas Steel (friendly Mr. Handy who says come with me if you want to live!)
A Medical conversation akin to House MD. Medicine checks which let you suggest diseases and of course "It's not Lupus".

Thanks for the suggestions :)
Remember things with dialogue are tricky to do, so not every one will be used. But keep suggesting :)

Lost - A hatch door in the middle of the desert with some jungle plants around it, script it so that when you go to it you will hear the sound of the smoke monster. There'll be a unique knife called Locke's Knife and Locke's Throwing Knife, the throwing knife will have x5 critical modifier, cripple effect, poison damage 4hp/50sec and knockdown effect, the throwing knife can only be used once though.)

Planescape Torment - Have a human skull lie around somewhere and when you get close to it he makes quirky remarks about stuff (Use sound files out of Planescape), the skull can be found on several locations which makes a comment about the area or people in the area.

Sims - Have a dead body with a red crystal lying next to it.

Dazed And Confused - Have two mannequins painted with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley's makeup (Kiss) in the back of a truck.

1)
Coming across a battle between raiders and fiends might be neat. Consider it a somewhat satirical approach of comparing New Vegas to fallout 3. (As fiends would wipe the floor with raiders). You can even place a note in the inventory of one of the raiders/fiends, for those that miss the implications of fallout 3 raiders being destroyed by the newer fiends.

2)
Or a variation of the above theme, Enclave soldiers vs brotherhood. A note on one of the dead enclave soldiers asks, why didnt we use the orbital weapon on the brotherhood camp before invading the capital wasteland? Incompetence, pure and simple (Last line paraphrased from one of President Edens radio addresses)

3)
Social commentary encounters..
Running into a group of robots fighting another group of robots. One can be called republicans and the other democrats. Notes can be added to groups of both sides, that make the distinctions between the two groups laughably sad(Or not, again depending on your preferences).

4)
Finding a corpse of a gamer sitting near a computer, with an angry letter to a certain gaming company asking when dead money will be released for the pc.

Bloc Party/Kele Okereke - Maybe have an NPC named Kele Okereke which is a boxer when you find him he's singing an acapella version of a Bloc Party song and if you go close to him you can find 3 skeletons, one with a bass guitar, one with an acoustic guitar and one with drumsticks in their hands.
If he notices you he will go berserk and try to kill you. (Not very 50's or "old school" but I don't care, Bloc Party is awesome anyway and if you look up the word sixy in a dictionary you'd find a picture of Kele in it.)

_____ - You find 5 men in medieval gear which are the size of a coffee mug that strike towards you screaming battlecries in high pitched voices, their weapons barely do damage though and if you walk over them they die.

Return Of The Living Dead - You can find a feral ghoul reaver which seems to never die, only way to kill it is to blow off a limb, problem is, it's limb damage is enormous, it's health is around 5000, at death it goes unconscious, it's limb health is 10.000 for each limb, it has 10 perception.

Those are very nice, and dooable :)

I've started with a fight between fiends and raiders. It works rather well with the new Wild Wasteland challenge added :)

More suggestions from anyone would be great.

Hmm a few more ideas. I am trying to keep them as simple to implement as possible.

1)
Human corpse named "Zoey" (or whatever left for dead(Steam zombie game) character you want) with lots of dead zombies around her?
2)
A dead alien with the name of Thor? Or Loki? (Stargate reference)
3)
A briefcase named "Sheen's briefcase" and have a fair bit of drugs in it? Corpses with party hats all around it. (Celebrity reference, of an actor who supposedly donated a briefcase of cocaine for a party)

When you are fighting General Oliver and the NCR heavy troopers, there should have been a cut scene in which you see your character, Oliver and the heavy troopers running into rooms coming out of different rooms like in Scooby Doo. And eventually it breaks into another cut scene in which Oliver is playing the drums, you are the lead guitar and the troopers play the base and secondary guitars, until they all eventually say "WWWWWWAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTT!!!!!!!" and the cutscene ends and they all attack you. Of course, with the Scooby Doo song.

And maybe if you are with the NCR, when you kill Legate Lanius you take off his mask and say "It was old man Lanius!" and he responds with "We would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling NCR!"

*blinks* You know, even after three beers this post still makes me cringe. Besides being completely immersion breaking, it also needs copyrighted material and voice work. Not to mention your messing around with vanilla quests, which tends to be a bad idea.

A pack of feral ghouls, surrounding a dead body carrying a chainsaw and sawed-off shotgun. Possibly near the wrecked highwayman. Of course the body should be named "Ashley".

i say more Monty python references!!!!!!!!

like you walk into a room of high-ranking legionaries singing "WE'RE KNIGHTS OF THE 'ROUND TABLE" from the Holy Grail.

when entering the lush, forest-like area in front of vault 22 you are attacked by a super mutatnt (surrounded by smaller ones, or maybe just the bugs their originally) that shout "nee!!!" at you before attacking.

periodically, find ravens w/ coconuts (or something equivalent) tried to their feet.

since they already added the gang of old ladys, you could add some of the other gangs. like the road cone gang, or the gang of babies to freeside.

I know all, but one, of these is from the holy grail, but it is really the only Monty Python movie i have seen recently. Guess i need to see "life of the bryan" again ( i am sure it is full of fun roman jokes that could be used).

If you didn't get these references, I am sad.

That's because in America, "Hon" is short for "Honey" and pronounced "Hun"
you mean "Han" as in "Han Solo"
-----------------------------------------------

Two skeletons named Vinny and Sol with Desert Eagles that say "REPLICA" down the side.......(also the guns don't work)

A protectotron laying face down, dead, named "Marvin"

Another skeleton out in the middle of nowhere with a "Scroll of Acrobatics 1000" in his inventory......shout out to Morrowind....

Not dead, just standing there, doing nothing but sighing. Perhaps a pop-up messages that display upon examination that the robot seems really, really depressed.

 PERFECT!!!!

You could also add, "He seems to be waiting for someone" to it too, if you read the books,
IIRC I think he stands in the same exact spot for hundreds of thousands of years, waiting for Arthur, Ford, Zaphod and Trillian
at the spot where the Restaurant at the end of the Universe gets built.
