Will all wildlife want to kill you again?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:52 am

In more than a few heavy conversion mods for the PC version of both Fallout 3 and Oblivion, one of the things they did was modify the creatures so not all of them are out to kill you. They made it so some ignore you completely, while some others flee from you.

So... Will we have to take a Pessimistic Golden Rule (do unto others before they do unto you) to all creatures out in the wastes, or can we be a little more at ease concerning the Mojave fauna?\

And secondly... will they not set your companions into aggro?

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul did such for Oblivion, and Jorge Salgado (AKA "Oscuro") is on the FONV dev staff, so I hope that bit of sensibility made it over into FONV.

Well apparently, the big bison looking thing (Big Horner) is supposed to be non aggressive unless you attack it.

I sure would hope so. Also that it's not like a cheap Hong Kong flick where the main character enters a battlefield and suddenly everyone turns against him, and only him.

I really, really hope they modified the "aggro range" of some creatures in the game. I can't tell you how annoyed I was when some damn bloatfly, radscorpion or molerat had managed to spot me from halfway across the map and started chasing me for whatever reason.

I would always pick the Animal Friend Perk, level 1, so that I would not have to kill dogs and rats. I think it is more real when an animal would prefer to leave you alone. That is only natural. Now, an animal that is bothered or attacked should get aggressive. Also, animals that are diseased could get aggressive.

Of course, some animals are just downright mean and who wants to cuddle with a Deathclaw anyway? I don't even think male Deathclaws want to pillowtalk a female deathclaw.

i think animals like the big horner or molerats should attack when you are within say 10 ft. of them. Why would molerats want to attack you in the first place?? Considering people eat them, you would think they would be afraid of people. It would be fun and sorta comical to chase after a molerat with a bat to try and get some food.

I hope both the animals and the non-faction associated human baddies get this kind of treatment. Many people have noted how inconsistent it is with reality for unarmored raiders to attack a clearly superior target in Power Armor, so the animals (other than the especially ferocious or radiation crazed) should also act accordingly.

It would be cool if they had animals "warn" you (bark or make some kind of noise) when you were encroaching on their territory (got within a certain distance) and then attacking you instead of just attacking you outright. Obviously attack dogs and whatnot would probably not bother with that sort of thing.

I know it's not going to happen, but I still think it would be cool (and not just in an immurshuny way).

Yeah but those are the domesticated ones, I seem to remember them mentioning the wild ones were pretty dangerous.

It would be nice to have a Scrib-like creature in New Vegas. The docile deer in Oblivion and the boring Brahmin in Fallout 3 totally pale in comparison to those cute and cuddly Scribs.

Big Horners and Brahmin won't attack, but in my opinion, neither should Molerats, Rats, Mantises, Dogs or any other type of small wildlife. And they probably won't set your companions into aggro, because Obsidian is WAY better at managing companions than Bethesda.

Well it's possible since Dogmeat did it in F3 so maybe it is in, they haven't given away everything yet.

Mantises are small?

I know they were in FO2 but I thought they were upgraded to people size in New Vegas?

The Jungle Vault screenshot shows them pretty small.

This. Very much. I've been asking for the same thing for ages. Take some pointers from how Risen handled the wildlife. Instead of being instahostile, the critters were more for their own businesses up until the player picked a fight with them.

Agree 100%, the wildlife was alot more natural.

If it's still super-aggro, I'm sure the mods to pacify them will be out in short order again. It will be interesting to see what effect that Oscuro has on the game. :)

I agree for the most part, but it makes total sense for packs of wild dogs to be aggressive.

Didn't his OOO mod make the wildlife more... well, like wildlife (animals behaving more like animals)? Can't remember anymore as I've not played Oblivion in years.

All the time?

And sure, there ofcourse needs to be some insta-aggressive animals too - and different levels of aggression. I don't see deathclaws being tame.

Well considering the vegitation is so sparse I think its fairly natural that the only animals that survived were primarily scavengers and carnivores that could eat each other or eat pretty much whatever they find. While its true animals might be cautious about approaching you if they are starving and you are a food source I don't think an animals intsinct would factor in survival when if it dosn't get to eat you its gonna starve to death anyway.

He had quite a script setup on the wildlife that governed their behavior far more complexly than they were in vanilla.

I thought I remembered something about it. Not a complete senile yet.

Well, yes. That's true. Talking deathclaws were always a mistake, though. (imo)

I take it you've never come across a pack of wild dogs in real life.

Let me tell you--they do attack. Wild dogs are a serious danger in certain parts of the world.

Dogs in "Fallout: New Vegas" will, rightly, be aggressive.

Goris was pretty awesome, actually.

He's my favorite Fallout character.

There was a random encounter in Fallout 3 I encountered a few days ago, I was heading south from Megaton, there's a small point just before you starting going uphill where there's always some random encounter happening. I watched a giant rad scorpion take on giant ants and win, then it turned to me, but instead of attacking me it just watched me before turning away. It didn't even register as an enemy.

Maybe there might be the same kind of thing in New Vegas.
