Will I Regret New Vegas?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:25 pm

Just posting this because I am wondering if I will regret getting NV. I don't have it now, but am getting it for Christmas, mainly since I don't have any time because of school. I'm not worried about all the people who are saying "buggiest game ever" and I'm ignoring the comments like "threw it out the window and went back to FO3" or "chucked in the bonfire and waiting for FO4" because I assume (correct me if I am wrong here) that by the time I get to around to playing it during break, a patch will have been released that will reduce glitches/freezing to a level similar to FO3. You see, I am worried for different reasons. I bought the GOTY edition of FO3, and as a result didn't have to:

a ) deal with all of the issues that all of the DLC chapters had when released (especially the Pitt, heard that was a nightmare)

b ) pay for the DLC chapters. (not sure I would go $9.99 for Operation Anchorage)

c ) deal with the abrupt ending, since Broken Steel was already installed, didn't have to wait until it came out to keep playing

However, by buying New Vegas now, I will have to pay for DLC, wait forever for it (I have a PS3) and have to deal with all of the bugs.

I have heard that New Vegas has more (double?) quests and locations and that it takes multiple playthroughs since quests for factions are shut off if you side with one of the other factions. I put in somewhere between 175-200 hours into FO3 not including any of the DLC and I still have things left to do (Yeah, I'm not the fastest/most aggressive player, just kind of take my time and chill, and I'm really thorough)

I guess my real question is: Is New Vegas enough on its own to keep me going until PS3 gets DLC?

Ahh as i read your post i was about to say get it now but as i see your on a console i would have to say it is entirely up to you. I play on PC so the bugs for the most part are fixable either by mods (i am currently running 11 or 12 now) or with the ability of console commands i can muscle my way past the bugs as necessary. Truth is i have been gaming probably for longer than most people here have been potty trained, and in all that time i have yet to find a single game that did not have some kind of bug or another. Games are a complex program and no developer can find and fix every bug, which is why a healthy mod community is such a strong bonus for a game, but again that leaves out the console players who are pretty much stuck with a game that is what it is and will always be what it is in a tough spot. I myself have no idea what kind of interface you have on the consoles but i would have to say that i really like FONV and would recommend it to anyone bugs included, just save often, and have a sense of humor about it, because trust me getting pissed about bugs does nothing. Considering as i said even companies like Blizzard who are notorious for taking years to develop and release a bug free game still have to issue patches occasionally.

I think if you spent 175-200 hours in FO3 and still didn't even complete everything, New Vegas should keep you busy for a while. My first playthrough of New Vegas was probably something like 100 hours and I know I didn't get to everything because I'm now on the second playthrough and discovering things I missed, even though I'm playing it almost the exact same way (i.e., trying to make nice with as many factions as possible, just doing things in a different order and with different abilities). Plus, seeing as how there are some quests that involve irking some factions while serving others, it's actually impossible to do the entire game in a single playthrough.

And personally, I don't regret getting Fallout 3 twice – once near release, and once for the GOTY edition (which ended up being only a few bucks more than buying all the DLC one by one, thanks to getting it on sale). I was able to lend my old copy out to friends, and keep playing it myself.

I'm on PC, and don't mod out the bugs.

But, and I'll say this as someone who has over 1600 hours on F3...the bulk of the bugs came in with Broken Steel, and a large number of the bugs in FNV have come over from F3. Until I installed BS, I had virtually no bugs in F3, and that includes both Anchorage and the Pitt.

FNV is a good game, entertaining and has a good storyline if you look into it deeply. At the moment though, for some people, it's a gaming hell of a programme. Either way, you need to pace your play out, and from what you've said you'll do that fine.

I say go for it, but with a word of caution - check the hardware/software forums first. That will give you a more dispassionate view of the programme's problems, without the emotive commentary from either side of the debate.

Will I Regret New Vegas?
The console version, quite possibly. The PC version, no. FNV is a great game when modded, but is a practically unplayable on the Xbox/PS3 (unbalanced gameplay, invisible walls = lack of open gameplay, etc.).

Will you regret it cause of DLC? No, I would say you easily have 100-150 hours of play time with the straight content (assuming you do 2-3 playthroughs for each fraction)

Im on PC, If you can I would suggest you go this route rather for 2 reasons:
- Mods, if your worried about game time, this is your best friend. Modders are bringing out new stuff everyday!
- Bugs, Ive heard that the PS3/Xbox ports are FAR more buggy than the PC version with absolutely NO WAY to fix these. Again via mods, a lot of the bug fixes are already available on PC.

However if you are forced to go console route, I still dont think you will regret it.

Trulies? I do have the PC version with zero mods loaded, so it should work the same as the XBOX or PS3 version with no mods loaded. I do not find it practically unplayable at all. I ran into an invisible wall once when experimenting going over a mountain. I did'nt care. I turned around. It did not make the game unplayable.

it depends on how much you let the bugs..bug you. i've only encountered a few and by using the wikia page i've found several workarounds that the community has pooled together and have been able to avoid any major problems. :) overall i find that NV just pips Fo:3 to the post in terms of awesomeness. no mean feat :) just buy the game, what's the worst that can happen?

Trulies?
You saying I lie? I have an opinion, just as you do obviously. I rented the 360 version and played it for a week, and found the gameplay to be crap. So I went out and purchased the PC version, installed around 20 mods and now the game plays fantastic. Sorry if that conflicts with your own POV, but the OP asked for input and so I gave mine. Anyone who buys this game for the console is setting themselves up for possible disappointment compared to the PC version, end of story.

Some peoples xboxs OR discs are [censored] and won't run correctly, I got lucky and have no issues.

Asai- Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I'm not one to get pissed about bugs like people flying in the air or whatever, constant freezing is the bigger issue to me. But like you said, saving often solves that issue.

coinop25- Aright, the playtime sounds good to me, and I actually enjoy doing multiple playthroughs, so its all good. And I was thinking about just getting GOTY when it comes out so I don't have to bother with downloading from PSN. If I see it on sale when it comes out, I might get it.

Gungho1- Cool, I didn't know about the bugs coming in with BS, I'm definitely more confident about any possible DLC in terms of that now. And I'll definitely look at the hardware/software forums first.

MadG- I could go PC, but I tend to lean more towards PS3. If it's just completely unplayable, then I will go the PC route, but from what I'm hearing alot of the "problems" are just angry people exaggerating.

wurble182- Yeah, I'll probably get it no matter what, I've never been one to rage-quit because any strange bugs. And like you note, the wiki, as well as other places, have workarounds for various issues.

Baangus, Boradam, Only Asks Once, RadMe- Yeah, I've found that all systems and copies of games are not equal. For example, I know some people were having RDR kill their PS3s, while others had no issues and some (me included) had some potentially concerning issues, and stopped playing it just to avoid any possibility of having their console ruined. Some problems are just luck of the draw.

You've answered your own question! The way you play is exactly the way I play, and my first full run I had dang near 100 hours. I'm on my 2nd run, and I'm at level 18 or so, and haven't touched the main quest or 80% of the other quests. I'm just wandering around with Veronica sniping fiends, selling loot and building my character for the big finale whenever I decide to start questing. The answer is I believe you'll love it!

I'm on PS3 as well. If you can ignore a few crashes a few minor glitches and that then definiely get it. For me it hasn't even been that buggy, or glitchy crasy and all that. It was a good decision. I had the same feeling about it too, should i buy it and then still haveto pay money for DLC, well yah if the DLC looks good and if people say its good and i think it seems good then I'lll buy it. As for will it keep yuo playing unitl DLC, i dunno but its gonna keep me playing for a long time. I like the fact that it ends i mean i would porefer to play afterwords but its alright. Still the game is great and for me IT HAS NOT BEEN BUGGY so i would say buy it if you want.

Lol alright then mate, since I've clearly been exaggerating in any complaints I've made you don't need need my input.

Go buy it for the PS3. I'll be avidly waiting to hear your opinion on it.

WOWEE!!!!!!! Your sarcastic attitude and assumption that by "alot" I meant:

"everyone who mentions any problems is a complete liar, especially Psychotic Tortoise, I've read all of his posts and they're all BS"

just goes to show that you are one of those "rage" gamers. I acknowledge that there are problems (hence the: "If it's just completely unplayable, then I will go the PC route" why would I suggest the game is unplayable if I thought all comments were exaggerated), and I would be any idiot not too. I just think its funny that there are two types of people on this forum: those who are disappointed but honest about the issues they have faced, and understanding that patches are not immediate--especially when there are these many problems, and those who are just throwing a fit reminiscent of a spoiled 3 year old, who gave up trying to work their way around glitches or just waiting, and instead spam up the forums with endless remarks that aren't really helping anybody. For example, the post you just made. Attacking your fellow gamer, especially one who hasn't bought the game yet (I'm the one who can send a real message to Bethesda if I chose to by not buying New Vegas) is both ignorant and childish. There are people here who actually trying to work together to either work around these issues, and get them patched, and if you don't want to join in, then just piss off kid.

Thats whats I was expecting, I had my share of issues with glitches and crashing on FO3, and as long as it's not too excessive, NV is sounding awesome.

I'm on console and have not found the game to be nearly as buggy as the complaints on here describe. My advice would be if you do get it, clean your lasers every 10 hours of play (I do this anyway, FONV or not). I find it rarely freezes and the load times are NOTHING like what is described here.

Clean my lasers??? Sorry but can you explain what you mean? never have done this before, sounds like it might be a good idea. And oh yeah, like you said, I find it unlikely that the game will be as buggy as people are claiming.

I didn't "attack" you. I just stated, rather bluntly I'll admit, that I wasn't about to inform you of any glitches that I have encountered. One reason being that you obviously want to believe that the game's problems are nothing to write home about. I'd be wasting my breath, or.. finger energy in this case I suppose. I mean come on, we both know that you are going to buy this game.

Another related reason for my response is that you haven't even played the game. Yet you're quite willing to discard people's complaints entirely due to the fact that some lucky people have experienced no bugs, and have ignorantly stated that the game has no major problems across the board.

I know that you weren't targetting me specifically with your comment, christ you probably haven't even seen a single one of my posts until now. But still, you might want to actually get your facts straight before completely blowing off any of the complaints on the grounds that you think some of them might be exaggeration.

But like I said, go buy it for the PS3. There was no sarcasm in that part my post whatsoever. I meant it. If you think it's worth the gamble, go for it.

Oh and "piss off kid"? Really lol? Next time you decide to broadcast personal feelings of inadequacy, I'd prefer it if you're frustration wasn't directed at me.

busted and buggy FO3 and NV is nothing compaired to how awesome tha game is in general.......on PC.....tha busted and buggy is enogh for to say NEVER again on consol EVER

Alright, at this point, I am going to buy the game, you are right, but I don't "want" to think there are no issues. I'm not really in the business of fooling myself, I just know that eventually, this game will be playable, and that yes (gasp) at least some of the people on here are exaggerating the things they have experienced. The glitch/freezing issue was secondary in my OP, and this was mainly a DLC/GOTY based question. I just find it interesting that many have treated it like the main question.

And your statement "Another related reason for my response is that you haven't even played the game. Yet you're quite willing to discard people's complaints entirely due to the fact that some lucky people have experienced no bugs, and have ignorantly stated that the game has no major problems across the board." is completely irrelevant. So what, if I had posted saying that I thought some of the people saying they hadn't experienced issues were lying/exaggerating would you have posted that "you're quite willing to discard people's complaints entirely due to the fact that some unlucky people have experienced bugs"? I mean, really lets be honest here, you obviously have experienced some bugs yourself, and posted because you were/are opposed to my completely perceived feeling that there are "no major problems across the board". At what point in time did I say there were "no major problems across the board"? All I have done is (repeatedly) stated that I believed that some people are exaggerating, and there seems to be no issues that make the game not worth getting, especially in the long run. And don't try to change your tone post-comment, how was there "no sarcasm in that part my post whatsoever." when you said that you would "be avidly waiting to hear your opinion on it"? If that's not sarcasm, I don't know what is. Unless you really are dying to hear my opinion, in which case i will PM you when I get the game and have played it for at least 10 hours. (for accuracy's sake)

And finally, please don't try to start throwing around diagnoses like a over-zealous psych major. I added the "piss off kid" simply because that is what I got from your original post (like I stated in my reply to it!!! Wow, isn't it great when you actually read what people say?) In the end though, I do appreciate the fact that you seem to have a viable point, you just need to read what I said to see that I never was really disagreeing with you in the first place.

Good point with the chillaxin' man, I do think (even though I will admit that I haven't it played yet) that people are getting a little bit too worked up.

I am completely capable of saving often, so I should be good. I do want to play FNV pretty bad, so I will definitely be picking up a copy over break, and will probably have to treat getting the DLC as a secondary issue.
