I wonder if Todd owns a REAL sword?

Post » Tue Aug 16, 2011 11:36 am

You mean like http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5227/5624518278_3d42f29668_z.jpg? :hehe: Had to get the scabbard made separately since Albion don't make them for some reason, but I do love it.

Oh...so...jealouse!!!

Such a beautiful sword. Type Xa? Love the red, though I think i'd go for something more like this personally http://www.dbkcustomswords.com/images/blog/BJK/AlbionArn6/AlbionArnBK6B1152.jpg

I'm writing a movement called "In Hoc Signo Vinces" ("in this sign you will conquer") for a symphony I'm working on at the moment :)

My Oakeshott typology is a bit vague, so I'll have to stick with "classic knightly sword". I did wonder about going for a scabbard that matched the grip, but after getting another scabbard made (the lower of http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5011/5404076939_c6f165f2e6_z.jpg, which though not oxblood, it looks like it in certain lighting) I loved the reddish colouring so much I decided to go with that and have the straps etc made in a matching brown instead. Tough choice though, and however much I love it, I think there's such a thing as "scabbard envy"! It's not that long since I overlooked the scabbard completely, perhaps unsurprisingly since so few swordmakers include them, but it's getting to the point where I wonder if I now actually prefer them over the actual sword.

I'm writing a movement called "In Hoc Signo Vinces" ("in this sign you will conquer") for a symphony I'm working on at the moment :)

I still think I prefer my alternative translation: "this sword belongs to Vince". :P

Edit: I completely overlooked the "writing... symphony" bit. Blimey!

Haha, that's epic!

I would love to own my own sword, but unfortunately I don't have the money for a decent one. And I would have no use for one.

No, A Nodachi is a sword that can be 5ft+ An Odachi is a more curved Nodachi.

These swords are Japanese Katana Claymores.

Then it's...A claymore? A Zweihander? I'll just call it a straight 2H.

I think that, strictly speaking, a Claymore is more of a hand-and-a-half, isn't it? I'm never entirely sure, but I tend to imagine them as being like the http://www.albion-europe.com/search/model.aspx?model=92 for example, which though imposing is still comparatively mid-range at just 4' long - as compared to their http://www.albion-europe.com/search/model.aspx?model=56, a genuine two-hander which is a monster of a sword.

I own a functional katana. I don't have any pictures of it, but my brother and I cut clean through a pretty beefy sapling once. It was chill.

I also own an old-fashioned wooden recurve bow. I got it a long time ago when I was pretty young though, so the draw is weak -- I'd like a new, stronger one.

They're pretty scary in terms of what they can cut through: again, there's a lot of misconceptions and you find people who assume they'll cut through steel bars if they've been folded enough times (which was actually a way of dealing with the shortcomings of Japanese metallurgy of the time), but that a couple of layers of leather will protect your arm. Neither is true: no sword can cut through an inch of steel, but pretty much no amount of leather will stop one hacking your arm right off...

He's probably wealthy enough to have his own Blacksmith shoppe in his backyard... He most likely has an arsenal of weapons in his home.

Here's mine. I love it. If anyone breaks into my home I'll go medieval Skyrim on their !@#$. :toughninja:

I've mentioned before that I live in a castle. In the basemant is a sword collection of around 200 various hacking and slashing implements. Mostly swords and knives. All of them taken from the owners after they no longer needed them due to losing the battle (badly).

Sorry no pictures, I'm not allowed to show them to the public by law. Just as well as there's no way in heck I'm going to start cleaning that room. There's creepy crawlies down there... And they have swords!

I have a gladius very similar to http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Gladius&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1024&bih=653&tbm=isch&tbnid=zyI2UC_OUUGG_M:&imgrefurl=http://getasword.com/982-imperial-roman-gladius-sword.html&docid=y1i80l_QiCahfM&w=300&h=300&ei=um9JTpuQEZGWtwfD69HoBQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=283&page=20&tbnh=150&tbnw=150&start=237&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:10,s:237&tx=78&ty=57, though the hilt, pommel, sheath decorations bronze colored and the sheath is red. There is also an inlay in the blade, so that the blood all drips off at the tip.
