would you play an rpg that mixed magical weapons and guns

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:00 pm

We know that there aren't any guns in SK, and thats good. Guns don't belong in TES.

However, if you were to hear about an rpg that wasn't an already established franchise with its own lore and fan base, would you play that game if it included both magic and guns. its called genre mixing and some people don't believe it works. imo it would be fine.

essentially I am asking if any of you would enjoy an rpg that was for the most part just like TES (with magic, swords and bows, etc.) with the addition of things like revolvers and rifles. but was not a tes game. ( I already know tes fans don't want guns in TES, but is that only because it completely goes against lore or is it because they don't like play the two genres at once.)

cheers.

It's called Steampunk and it's been around since forever.

This also has nothing to do with Skyrim and shouldn't be posted here.

I dont see what this has to do with Skyrim, honestly. Or even TES altogether.

this is relevent to SK. I am asking why it is that people are threatened by genre mixing. (its not steam punk by the way, thats classical mixed with mechanical, hence the steam part) earlier when SK was announced alot of people irrationally freaked thinking there were going to be guns because beth worked on FO before starting SK.

I am asking why in the mind of tes fans guns would not be acceptable in SK and then if it would be acceptable in another franchise not linked to TES>

This again?

Cmon guns just don't fit, I feel like it ruins the lore of the world.

And dont use "Dwenmer had this and that" cause they may have had machines and stuff but they didnt have guns.

Point is I dont want it and if I did Ill play Fallout to get it out of me.

I would like a moderater to close this topic. its been moved, and despite what other opinions whethor or not this topic was relevent to the SK discussion it was. because it was my intention to ask why it is that genre mixing does not work for tes (ie, lore or just dislike of genre mixing) so by moving this topic it has now become irrelevent and there is no point leaving it open.

Seriously?

Because it has no place in the series.

Collecting mushrooms and getting bigger and jumping on enemies as the primary form of attacking is perfectly acceptable in a Mario game, but if it happened in The Elder Scrolls then it would be the most ridiculous thing ever.

EDIT: I also love this forum now for how many people have played Arcanum.

okay, that answers part of the question. but would you play a non TES game that mixed those genres. (and not like fable) or other games that just put in a gun but changed nothing about the genre and style of the game itself.

So you're asking if someone made a game extremely similar to TES but it included guns, would I play it?

Yes, why not? It's only unacceptable in TES because it does not fit with the lore of the universe and it would take things in a complete opposite direction than where the series has taken itself so far. If it's an entirely new game without lore against the use of firearms and has different lore that INCLUDES it, then no complaints can be made.

No but they had robots or more correct, a mix of a golem and a robot, movement was mechanical but used magic for control. This should make them far easier to make than golems if you had the technology.
I could see that elder scroll had cannons but not muskets. The musket was not a very impressive weapon, only benefit was that it was easy to use and it worked better than bows against plate armor, downside was low rate of fire and low accuracy, it worked well then large armies fought as they was hard to miss :) Most combat in elder scroll is between small groups of well trained opponent, if you are not trained but rich you have magic scrolls and staffs who works far better than early guns, you have a flintlock and I have a summon clanfear scroll.

no. the topic is asking WHY mixing magic and guns is percieved as unacceptable or not possible. as well as if people would play an rpg that mixed the two. there arent any games that do this. the quote used shows me saying "not like fable" because that isn't mixing the genre. just poping a gun into a game surrounded by magic isn't a genre mix. (neither was bioshock so I have no idea where that came from, since its isn't even an rpg)

I am talking about a game were magic exists and where they have normal human tech. after all, they have the metals to make swords there's nothing but ignorance preventing such a world from having guns. I personally imagine something like RDR (with first or third perspective) as well as magic.

it was a simple question, if you don't want to answer it then don't, but don't post something like "I played fable" because its an unintellegent response and not what I asked at all.

I would love for Bethesda to create a STAR WARS game. I think it would be a great fit featuring the classic Elder Scrolls explorations, conversations and confrontations.

It would be much more appropriate than the God of War Inspired Force Unleashed.

thank you velorien, that was what I was asking.

I have been thinking lately about why there are no fantasy rpg's that have a society that advances technologically, they all ways have magic and for some reason that prevents them from improving in fields of science. I know its not about progression in fictional worlds, but they always offer some lame excuse why its not possible.
