Wow Bethesda...

I have never complained about a patch yet... but what the HECK were they doing with 1.5? Why all the shadow changes? Now I get goofy flickering all over the place, and several 'stripe' effects in certain places, where shadows just look like black stripes on a surface. So bizarre.

I work in IT, and have to do some coding occasionally...it makes me wonder how this passed as "acceptable." Why do they think these shadow effects are an improvement? They are awful!

Is it like the circular banding seen http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/504641629020912986/727F01CED675B5D02E5BDDB6DEC0280ECC6C2016/, on the bridge? That's what 95% of my semi-distant shadows look like in the game now. Everything on Ultra; shadows set to Medium.

Sigh. I really wish we had individual options to tweak for shadows like we did in Oblivion. :nope:

in my case, shadows are much improved. no doubt we have all tweaked our ini's in a myriad of different ways so people are going to see differing results, but i'm pleased with the improvement.

I was already getting Shadow Stripping in snowy regions, so nothing new there. Shadows on grass look strange and inaccurate at times.

I guess Bethesda messed things up when trying to do the grass shadows or something else. Yeah, this needs to be fixed now.

A quick fix:

In SkyrimPrefs.ini:
fShadowBiasScale=4.0000

Make the shadows kind of pixelly-edged if you look close, but it gets rid of the stripes, at least.

Seriously, as f-ed up as the shadows already were, what possessed Bethesda to put in more? And on top of that, not giving us a way to shut them off?

Features like that and the kill cams (which I would also like to turn off) should be optional. I appreciate the effort, but there really needs to be a way to disable them for those who didn't want them in the first place.

The screenshots posted in this thread are exactly what I'm seeing. Is there an option anywhere to turn shadows off completely? I'd rather not see shadows if this is the product we are given.

You can try this one to turn off shadows http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=10789

Cheers for this--I'll have to give it a shot and see how it looks. I can live with pixel edges, but the striping was threatening to drive me insane. The screenshot I posted doesn't really do it justice...most angles look like the screenshot BounceDK posted. Talk about your immersion breakers. :wacko:

I don't know. Honestly, I do appreciate that Bethesda's taken the time to add in such improvements, and for free, to boot. But I really, really wish they'd also thought to throw in an off-switch.

For the striped shadow effect, esrafael's fix worked for me. Here is exactly what I did.

Navigate to Documents > my games > Skyrim

Edit SkyrimPrefs.ini

Set fShadowBiasScale=4.0000 under Display. It was defaulted to something like .25 or .3.

I have my Shadow detail set to high in the skyrim launcher prior to making this change. Making changes in the Skyrim launcher will overwrite what you do here. I posted before and after shots.

My shadows are insane. Huge blocks randomly appearing, obvious shapes around the triangles of the landscape, changes dramatically every millimetre I move the camera.

What primary and secondary resolution you guys using for shadows? and your blurmask as well if anything other than default (3)? Post launcher settings ofc.

Mine are Prim and Second @ 4096 and mask @ 2 haven't tried 1.5 yet though doing a clean install now.

Yep, same here. Was one of the issues allready with the beta version of 1.5 ... among other (new) bugs in 1.5 but still they released it :(
Glad I went back to 1.4 when the beta was still active and that I have Steam on Offline so I do not have that forced update to 1.5.

Mine are all at default, except for now changing ShadowBiasScale to 4.

iBlurDeferredShadowMask=1fInteriorShadowDistance=3000.0000fShadowDistance=2500.0000iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=1024iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=2048

That should be the default ini settings for Medium shadows. Every other setting is at Ultra.

Your not alone in that: in the beta version of 1.5, people (including me) already did report more CTDs with this version ... but still they released it ... go figure :(

Very few people Beta tested version 1.5 and were active on the forums. That we have so many issues now when it's released is partly our own fault, but of course mainly Bethesda's because they can test themselves and they have control over all the fixing. Still, it's something I think we users in general should think about for the next patch, before complaining on how they released a buggy patch. If more people would have reported and been active during the beta, perhaps the situation would be different.

I didn't notice any performance hit in the area I was in (Ivarstead). I did this during my lunch break so haven't actually played. I don't anticipate a performance hit though.

I think the problem is most forum users use plenty of mods and don't want to test because A: mods may conflict so they can't play, and B: mods may create bugs that aren't the fault of the patch and give a false bug report.
