Xbox 360 controller for computer

Post » Thu May 31, 2012 5:16 am

Are XBox 360 style controllers for the PC supported by the PC version of Skyrim? I am going to run it on a Mac that I have set up to run Windows via Bootcamp. Thanks for your help with this.

yes they "work" about as well as the other PC controls for the game, badly and akwardly for the user.

I refuse to use anything else due to this game being a terrible port.

I play fps/rts with mouse and keys, and 3rd person/sit back and relax games with my controller. It works flawlessly, as a pc elitist I have to say that you are not getting the full experience you could if you aren't sitting 5 feet away or sitting in a comfy bed with your significant other enjoying your pc game on a 40+" monitor. Never mind the mouse and keyboard is the awkward scheme for skyrim.

if they would bother fix the view so I could turn and it would turn WITH me instead of having to try to adjust the view and see where I am going it would be nice. Intead I make a right turn with one hand and try to turn the view and then while playing with that nonsense I run into a group that kills me. NOT "perfect" at all. At least with lousy implemetation of the mouse I can see where I am going.

Seriously? Or it could be the fact that we "pc elitist" can use a mouse and keyboard proper. I certainly didn't buy an expensive keyboard and mouse to play such games on a controller.

@Half64 I have a 140 Dollar keyboard and a 120 Dollar mouse and neither perform in Skyrim at all. When I say this I mean that regardless of the quality or brand of your peripherals they will respond the same inside the Skyrim software(because it is a crappy port). I also wonder what action you think you can perform(in Skyrim) that requires a kb/mouse over a controller? An online game OK if you use a controller you are far from elitist but to me being elite is finding the most effective way to play any game and thus conquer ones opponent. If this was an MMO a controller would be totally unacceptable, shooter same deal but it is an offline "immersive" RPG(barely) and requires nothing that a mouse and kb would provide. I can see the argument of hotkeys for combat combo types but who cares there are more combos than buttons on any keyboard so if you are really elite you will still have to go into the menu at some point either way. Gladiator 5 times on 3 different types of classes in WoW and Brutal Gladiator once as well....if anyone needs some of my kb/mouse skill resume.

Mouse is much better at aiming and rotating the position of the camera to suit your combat situation. A controller has limited speed when moving because it accelerates when you try to move the stick fast to follow a target. Why do you think mouse acceleration is enabled by default? It's terrible and why mouse people with a most should disable it.

You can pretty much always tell people are using a joypad in videos because they move like robots and spend a lot of time trying to aim.

I can hit a dragon(with anything ranged) at full speed moving at any angle I do see the issue you refer to but setting the sensitivity down a couple notches from default fixes the acceleration as it doesn't have time to increase speed even in full spin...at least for me. I guess the whole point is why does it matter the dragon is AI the enemy AI non of them are faster than a controller. If it was a breathing person on the other end I would always agree that a kb/mouse is better and by far. This was made evident with the mouse/kb hack on consoles in the COD games. The xbox players were reporting it as a hack so yes the difference is vast. I just don't see any reason to be super hardcoe over Skyrim I can easily tackle the game on master with out using perks that are overpowered on the controller.

Controllers are great for some PC games. Racing (obviously), Just Cause 2, GTA, Limbo, Magicka, and Braid are better with controllers - just to name a few.

I played a fair bit of skyrim with my pad on my tv, til I realised I was missing out on the finer details of the game, the little things you miss when you're not 1 ft away from the screen :)

Yep exactly why if I could spend around 300 on a mouse keyboard I couldn't spend the extra 60 for a xbox controller? I hate the console but the PC game support is beyond stellar these days. DX HR, Skyrim, Metro 2033 basically anything that was released for console and is a single player handles better with the controller. I don't race game but I can totally see a use there as well. BF3 however you won't catch me dead doing anything but flying with the controller. As Half said in an online game its very obvious when someone is using the controller. All that said preferences are preferences and Skyrim should support a mouse kb system better but the cold reality is it doesn't. Mouse acceleration etc be damned.

The point is that games are designed more for joypads and with aids they work better than normal but not reason at all to use them over a mouse and keyboard. If you you've converted to a joypad more more the fact you've become a casual gamer and the developers forced you that way because the games are console ports.

As for Just Cause 2, their control system is a joke because the game has auto lock-on to targets and quiet a few games have cheating aids like that. Game devs dumbed down games so controllers can get a better advantage and some games you only need to point in the general direction to hit a target rather than actually being accurate.

I challenge you to any online game period in which you will be decimated and thus your point will be made moot.

You could never beat me in a online game with a controller and if you want a game of UT3 on your controller against me you'll be embarrassed

Clearly reading is hard I don't use a controller for ONLINE games unless you consider Skyrim one because of steam it isn't an thus you argument over being
"l33t" is moot. I use a Merc Stealth with a modified keyset(mechanical) and a g700 logitech for online games. Pretty sure Razor makes pretty looking garbage and logitech's gaming keyboards are a joke so like I said pick your game instead of theorycrafting about how you already won. I see your strong suit is Unreal Tournament which I don't own but am willing to purchase if you really want to prove a point. Elite games can use controllers in their offtime and still be elite.

What a stupid thing to say. I use both mouse/keyboard and gamepad on my pc, and i am definitely not a casual gamer...............then again i am not a sad pc elitist either.

So do I but only on driving games and 2D games where where the controller is best. PC elitist? I've never used a joypad for such games way before Xbox came along and see zero need to use one that limits my movement by using two thumbs. If you can play such games using two thumbs then fine but make no mistake about it, games have changed because of controllers and their style and PC users have had to put up or shut up.

The only reason I brought an Xbox controller was because Rockstar force me to by locking out thirdy party controllers in GTA IV (I and my wife only use controller for driving). Yes, even my wife can use a keyboard and mouse for such game because aiming and controlling the camera is a lot better, LOL

Keywords are: Before Xbox(MS) came along....and the same was true for me. What I am saying is adapt or die is the best approach to PC gaming overall these days as half the games are ports from the consoles. I don't have GTA but planning on playing Skyrim when I bought my rig and knowing it was going to be a port was enough to drop the 60 on a controller. I knew better is all I am trying to say.
