So my Xbox finally kicked the bucket.

I have a 360S and love it. However, you are right in that it may not be worth it if new consoles are coming out in a year or so. The 360S is better than older versions, but the price tag is simply a turnoff for anyone who is strapped for cash.

An alternative would be to get a PS3 if you don't already own one. It's still pricey, but it could be nice to use it as an opportunity to play the exclusive games tou've been missing out on. Plus it's not likely to break down on you like an old 360 might.

Disclaimer: I still prefer the 360 to the PS3 overall, but PS3's are cheaper and you can try new, different things so it doesn't feel like a total waste.

Mine went down with three rings three days before Skyim's release. Probably going to be forced to replace it.

I have this fear that if I go ahead and buy the nice version the next gen consoles might be announced.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. On some new channel, maybe CNN, they said that Microsfot told them that they shouldn't expect any news until 2015. And if that didn't go according to plan I would expect 2014.
