Yes I KNOW it's locked and no I _wasn't_ eyeing it!

It's kind of a pet peeve for me but it's a big enough one that I'd put a shotgun to the accusing guy's face and blast his head off and set the entire town hostile against me resulting in the mass slaughter of an otherwise friendly town and me going through the inconvenience of a reload.

Seriously though, I hope they put some sort of delay like 1 maybe 2 seconds for this type of NPC "reaction" so if I'm being accused for wanting to circumvent a locked door/container/terminal, it's because I'm looking really hard at it because I really want to break into it and not because my cursor casually hovered over it when I was turning around or because I was moving closer to a merchant and their stupid locked prewar cash register (with one bundle of prewar money and 100 or so random caps and maybe a bobby pin that I don't really care about) was in the way...

hey it′s a lawless wasteland out there (even partly in Vegas) where everyone could be a gun tooting psycho, wouldn′t you be paranoid about having anyone near your locked stuff?

Yeah, a delay of several seconds would be nice before we are accused of sizing up the chance of getting a five-fingered discount. They'd be perfectly justified in giving you a stern warning if you kept staring at it on the other hand, after all, this is Fallout, and those merchants or home owners have probably been robbed or stolen from multiple times in the past.

I personally think merchants and the like should be less concerned about you gazing too long at the shelves and instead take immediate offense at you drawing a weapon in the shop. That would be a good indicator that they're about to be robbed. Doing so in a shop should result in the NPC drawing their own weapon and admonishing you to put in back in the holster before they put you on the floor.

I really hope there are places in New Vegas that make it a policy to force all weapons to get checked at the door. Making an assassination target live inside the building could open up all kinds of interesting options of trying to sneak a weapon in, steal one from security while inside, bribe the men at the weapon check counter, charm your way in, or the old wasteland standby of giving the men at the door just your ammunition (very quickly).

Hopefully NPCs will have weapons awareness this time around in addition to being concerned that you seem a bit too interested in your reflection on their snow globe. Is any NPC really going to assume a pleasant conversation is your aim when you talk to them with weapon drawn?

At least we don't have that creepy guy from the Figher's Guild following me around watching every step.

However there does need to be a delay of some kind on the reactions. Wait until maybe I try the door first.

I couldn't agree more. Back in the Fallout 1 and 2 days, it was considered "bad etiquette" to walk into town with you weapon unholstered and if you did ready your weapon you would get admonished by the town guard. I'm not sure if the Obsidian devs will bring back that feature in FONV, but if they did, I'd totally welcome it...

Yeah I remember that that guy from the Fighter's Guild, in Cheydinhal was it? He was pretty weird, almost as if the wrong behavior script was somehow copied and pasted onto him... O.o

Nah, he's in every guildhall. The generic repair-guy & watchman. Of course, once you're a member of the guild, he follows you around watching as you loot every item that's not nailed down. :D

As for the main topic.... yeah, it got pretty annoying. Talk to a vendor, sell some stuff, turn to walk away.... and get yelled at for being a thief, just because you panned across their countertop while turning. Grrrrr.

Not just that, though, not just the "I hope you're not thinking of breaking into that." But the other stuff. The kicking a bent tin can as you head toward a trader and get, "HEY! Be more careful!" "Watch it!"

*bewildered look around, see tin can kicked entirely by accident* "Oh, oh! I'm sorry! Did I kick a precious piece of tin, did I? Did I boot a whiskey bottle by accident? Is that expensive, precious to you, is it? I'll replace it."

Make lockpicking not pause the game and when/if character attempts to interact with the object, NPCs react.

Well it's your fault if you try when people are watching. Wouldn't people not want you to tinker with their valuables?

true, but unless there is a gameplay mechanic to represent the lookout in a typical lockpicking attempt it creates a unnecessary frustration for players who wanna play thiefs.

Put in a headturning mechanism during lockpicking then. I wouldn't mind even if the minigame was scrapped altogether and let the character do that job while the player keeps watch (actually, I'd prefer it that way).

one of the things I really hated-
See a wastelander in the distance tangling with wild dogs
Snipe wild dogs and save the waster
run up to see if hes fine
Accidently kick dead dog
"HEY BE MOAR CARFUL NEXT TIEM!!!" :brokencomputer:
Hate NPC reactions. Prefered it in Oblivion if you picked a lock and they were nearby.
'stares at locked chest for 30 minutes of silence'
'looks over at NPC staring intently'
'Picks lock'
"HELP WEVE GOT A BURGLAR."

much better then fallout 3's "hurdur stop looking at my stuff hurdur."

Heh hah. I've fired the offending piece of junk at them with the Rock-It Launcher before.

With the stuff on the counter for traders thing as well, just grabbing it and carrying it off gets no reaction at all beyond, "Are you having fun with that?" Lone Wanderer whistling innocently as he carries some armour away to steal out of sight. lol

Yeah, that was kind of annoying too. The designers lay random junk throughout the wasteland and have the NPCs criticize us fro tripping over that stuff. Though it was occasionally fun to run into a large object like an oil drum or shopping cart and thanks to the havok physics engine, have it gain an unusual amount of velocity that it is enough to cause HP damage when it collides with the NPC... =p

The simple way to solve that problem,

Step 1: Soil yourself
Step 2: Toss the underwear to the other side of town
Step 3: While you're picking the lock, they'll be investigating that horrible smell across town
Step 4: SUCCESS

Considering that the only use for toilets in the wasteland is to put your face in and have a a gulp of irradiated water, soiling yourself may be the only choice... O.o
